Than longen folk to go on on pilgrimages,
So begins the Canterbury Tales, a story of pilgrims, takingadvantage of the spring weather to travel together on a spiritualand physical journey. As they travel, each has the opportunity totell a story; some funny, some serious. All together they create acommunity, bonded together both by a common purpose and thestories they share.
This is a wonderful model for the church. We are all on a spiritualjourney and we also share the physical journey as well. It is thestories of our lives, the ups as well as the downs, the give form andshape in the modern world to the stories we share in church. As
we enter into this beautiful spring and share the joy of the Easterseason, it might be fruitful to reflect on our status as a band oflatter day Canterbury Pilgrims.
We are a band of pilgrims that has grown over the years. We havefilled the place where we come to share our stories. The churchcan hold us well, but the other places where we share our timetogether cannot. We have reached a time in our shared journey
where we need to consider where we meet to feast and celebrate,
where we meet to study and where the staff of the inn (to stretchthe metaphor) gathers to do their work.
As we move forward with A Sound Future, please prayerfullyconsider what you can do to strengthen our life together. It is agreat challenge, but it can also be a joyful continuation of ourpilgrimage.

MARKS MUSINGSDuring one week in March, parishioners from St. Andrew's On-the-Sound, Church of the Servant, and St. James EpiscopalChurch traveled to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, to rebuild after the
effects of last year's devastating F4 tornado. This tornado packedwinds ranging from 210 to 260 mph. The tornado seemed totarget the most impoverished areas of the town and left a path ofdestruction a half mile wide making it impossible for the victims torebuild on their own.
We stepped in along with thousands of others in the Tuscaloosacommunity and throughout our country. Our team of
Episcopalians joined around 100 college students on spring breakto build several houses. We were inspired by the decision of thesestudents to take on this mission work rather than travel to a warm, sunny beach.
I have learned from this experience that we actually live in a worldwhere people choose good over evil. We live in a world wherepeople choose right over wrong. We live in a world where when
we see destruction, we come together and rebuild. There is asouthern African term called Ubuntu that I believe speaks to whatit means to live in community. It means, "I am who I am because
who you are." Archbishop Desmond Tutu explained, "Ubuntuspeaks particularly about the fact that you can't exist as a humanbeing in isolation. It speaks about our interconnectedness."
We are all connected in this world. When one person suffers, we
all suffer. I encourage all of you to put yourself out there.Volunteer in the community. Travel to areas throughout ourcountry and throughout the world and offer your hand and yourheart. When you reach out, connect, and care for others, you'llfind you've been loving God all along.
Blessings,Mark Powell
