Some Thoughts on "The Bite"...By Elizabeth Hennessy, DVM

I often find myself asking my puppy owners "How is your puppy's bite?" The standard reply is "Oh, just fine. He/she bites a lot, no problem with that bite." This is our first hurdle, the distinction between "bite", "does bite", "is biting" and so on. So I will begin with teeth. Teeth are involved with "bite" regardless of which word form is intended.

The dog (and yes to the disillusionment of some, Bull Terriers are dogs) has the following dental formula: (Think from midnose to angle of jaw)

I C PM M

Upper Jaw (maxilla) 3 1 4 2 X 2 (right and left) = 42 teeth

Lower Jaw (mandible) 3 1 4 3

I : INCISOR- The sharp little teeth in the front, designed to grab and pinch.C : Canine - Alias “fangs”, designed to rip and tear.PM : PREMOLAR - Small triangular teeth (except for PM 4. It’s big). They look like shark teeth and can sheer a leash in seconds.M : MOLAR- Designed for crushing and grinding. Need I say more...

Open your Bull Terrier's mouth (if possible) and count teeth. Good luck. If you don't get 42, you either weren't given enough time, can't add or, more likely, THERE AREN'T 42. Most Bull Terriers don't have all their premolars (equivalent to their status “ with marbles"... ) The teeth did not fall out. They aren't there and never were.

Our standard says nothing about number of teeth. This puts the judges in the precarious position ofhaving to assume what the bite might be with all teeth present, given no time to count. Think about this. We have made no effort to breed for 42 teeth. Missing teeth do not appear to be a problem for our dogs.Bull Terriers don't chew their food anyway!

Back to bites. The "normal" bite for the generic canine is called a SCISSOR bite with correct placement of the canines. This means the upper incisors lock over the lower incisors. The normal position of the lower canine tooth is in front of the upper canine, behind the lateral, or #3 incisor. The tip or crown, should clear theupper gum on the outside. Key word - OUTSIDE.

The Bull Terrier standard calls for a scissor or level bite. Level means the upper and lower incisors meet edge to edge. The canines should be as defined above.

Page 23: E Bull Terriers · E Bull Terriers A Monthly Internet Publication Photo by Louis Ruediger M a r s h a l l. MULTIPLE Best in Show / MULTIPLE best in Specialty Show ... Page 14 Wendigo

There are two major categories of bite “faults”; the length of the lower jaw in respect to the upper, and the placement of teeth in the jaw.

Veterinary dentistry categorizes bites in terms of major and minor defects. Major defects include those with genetic origin. Two examples: brachygnathism (undershot) where the lower jaw comes out in front of the upper and prognathism (overshot) which is the reverse. An overshot bite is uncommon in BullTerriers and has been referred to as “pig jaw”.

Minor defects are usually the result of retained baby teeth, minor discrepancies in the rate of jaw growth and trauma. If you read the show critiques you will hear judges refer to canines as “tight” or “inside”. “Tight” means the tip of the lower canine hits the upper gum. The placement is correct but gum clearance is not . “Inside” means the lower canine is inside the upper two teeth. This can result from NO SPACE, meaning the upper canine and #3 incisor are too close together and the lower is physically forced to move inside. Retained baby teeth can contribute to these conditions. To date I don’t believe we have studiedenough Bull Terrier mouths to say that these malocclusions result from a “narrow under-jaw”. Perhaps.

If the canine in question is making a hole in the hard palate, minor problems for the dog could result. I have yet to see these conditions impact the use of the “bite”, so to speak.

If the right and left sides of the canine mandible grow at different rates the result may be what is called a “wry mouth”. The technical term is anterior cross-bite. One side may appear to be scissor, the other undershot - from the perspective of the incisors. If you are completely confused get out your canineskeleton and look at the skull - visual aids are helpful. Better yet, look at the front of your dog’s mouth. If the incisor “alignment” is crooked from right to left, you may be looking at an example (providinghe/she has all his/her teeth).

Our Bull Terrier standard says the bite should be scissor or level. It does not disqualify “bad” bites. Our judges are faced with a challenge as the degree of “bad” determines the degree of fault. BAD IS A RELATIVE TERM. I have heard numerous adjectives used to describe bites; good, ok, a “thumbnail off level’’, bad and (my favorite) “shocking”.

How are we to select and breed correct bites if we don’t understand them? Do we want to? Do we care? The Bull Terriers don’t. As long as we continue to select for a head shape that is a concept NOT found in nature among canines, we will continue to have bite “problems”. The dogs will continue to operate with what they have (or don’t, as the case may be). They wouldn’t survive in “nature” anyway, bite faults or not.

Are bite faults genetically transmitted? Think about the boxer, the pug and the bulldog. The result of selectively shortening the muzzle is not much different than eliminating the “stop” (found in the generic canine) and curving the upper portion of the skull in the opposite direction. If we are looking for a wide, strong under-jaw and effectively shorten the skull, WHERE IS IT TO GO?

If we change the shape of the jaw how do we expect that the teeth will fit in and occlude correctly?Life is a series of compromises.

Q: What would you tell people about why this book is needed; why is there a market for it?

There are many excellent dog training books on the market already. They give very good advice and follow the latest scientific application of learning theory. For many dog owners, those books are fantastic and do the trick. However, there are some dogs that just don’t appear to get it, no matter how faithfully their owners read and follow the directions. The problem is that those books assume a certain amount of interest on the part of the dog. People who have “impossible” dogs (often hounds and terriers, but sometimes Border Collies and Golden Retrievers, too) are left there, clutching the training book, while their dogs ignore them and run off to amuse themselves with whatever mischief they can find. I wrote “When Pigs Fly” because there was not a book on the market that adequately addressed the specific challenges faced by the owner of an “impossible” dog – the independent dog who has no interest in being trained. What I have done is take the wonderful body of knowledge that is out there and give some guidance as to how to apply those principles of dog training to get your dog interested in learning what you want him to do.

Q: What do you hope people take from this book?

I hope that, after reading this book, people realize that their stubborn little monster dogs are actually brilliant pupils, just waiting for the right opportunity to show their stuff. I hope to teach people how to motivate their dogs to love to learn, and how to use that enthusiasm to teach their dogs anything. Most of all, I hope to show people that they can be happy living with the dog they already own and love.

Q: What comments have you heard from readers about it? Are you pleased with the response.

I am thrilled with the response to the book. What tickles me in particular is that the nature of much of the feedback is exactly what I had hoped it would be. The consistent comments are ones of relief that, finally, there is a book that gives methods that work for their “impossible” dog. Several people have written that they have spent hundreds of dollars on training books in the past, but never found one to help them until When Pigs Fly. I feel I have served a group of people and dogs that did not have much hope before reading my book. That makes me very happy! What has surprised me a little is how the book has become an affirmation for “difficult dog” ownership. I thought I was writing training book - I did not set out to write an affirmation on owning a Pigs Fly dog, but that is what people have written to me most about. I have to tell you that almost every letter and post that I receive leaves me a bit choked-up, too. I tend to bulldoze through life and have never been particularly fazed by "Can't" and "Shouldn't." When people told me my dog was hopeless, I just assumed those people were showing me what they did not know, and that the answer was out there, somewhere. What I find so touching is how much people needed to hear that message.

I am also delighted by the response that the professional dog training community has had to the book. Jean Donaldson, Karen Pryor, and Morgan Spector, all icons of modern dog training, have all praised the book. A friend of mine recently attended a clinic given by Suzanne Clothier (another incredible dog trainer that I admire) and told me that Suzanne had good things to say about the book, as well. These are people that I look up to and respect, so their good opinion of the book carries a lot of significance for me.

Page 25: E Bull Terriers · E Bull Terriers A Monthly Internet Publication Photo by Louis Ruediger M a r s h a l l. MULTIPLE Best in Show / MULTIPLE best in Specialty Show ... Page 14 Wendigo

Q: Is this a book that possibly could be on the shelves for many years? Is it timeless?

Oh, yes. The training system outlined in When Pigs Fly uses established behavioral and learning theories, rather than gimmicky and questionable interpretations of dog behavior. The book is based on scientific principles that will always be valid, so I am sure it will stand the test of time. When Pigs Fly uses plain English to educate dog owners on the laws of learning, and then shows them step by step how to apply those laws to their particular dog in order to get the desired results. No special training equipment is required. Just you, your dog, a clicker, and some treats. As long as people have dogs that are an extra challenge to train, When Pigs Fly will be a valid and indispensable resource.

Q: What would you tell people about yourself, and your own involvement with and interest in dogs?

My two passions are breeding champion Bull Terriers and doing dog agility. Anyone who knows Bull Terriers will say that these two passions are not compatible. Bull Terriers are the dogs that are just about the least willing to go along with whatever your plans are. They tend to go AWOL the instant you take off the leash, so teaching them to run them off leash around an obstacle course at top speed is a challenge, to say the least. Nonetheless, I loved my dogs and I wanted to do agility with them, not another breed of dog that would be easier to train. That led me to find out as much as I could about dog training and learning theory. Now I have over 25 performance titles and several more qualifying legs on five Bull Terriers, and every second I have spent getting those titles has been a joy.

Although I am ardent lover of dogs and dog training, I am also a regular person with a demanding full time job, so I have a special sympathy for today’s busy dog owner. I understand what it is to come home so tired that you can’t see straight and find that your dog is fresh as a daisy, demanding attention, and, furthermore, has committed mayhem in your absence. Instead of a hot meal and putting your feet up in cozy slippers, you are looking at crawling around on your hands and knees and picking up debris. Who has any energy left to train a dog after that? I address this dilemma in the book and offer some real solutions that have worked for me.

Q: The pictures in the book are incredible. What can you tell us about the photographer?

Lou Ruediger is a full time staff photographer with the Pittsburgh Tribune and his contribution to the book is immeasurable. I had a list of the concepts I wanted to illustrate using an assortment of dogs. However, I had only a vague idea of how to translate those training concepts into pictures. That’s where Louie came in and saved the day. Lou has an incredible ability to use the medium of photography to express his keen artistic sense. He also happens to be an ardent dog fancier with an excellent eye for a dog. Because of this combination of skills, he was able to set up and take the photos in such a way as to convey the story I wanted to tell. Not only do the pictures convey the training concepts, but the emotion and beauty behind the human dog partnership, as well. I think it is his ability to capture and convey multiple messages through a single image that makes him a great photographer.

Q: How do people order it? The book is available or can be ordered at bookstores, from the publisher, Dogwise Publishing, www.dogwise.com and at on-line retailers.
