The Grade 3's have been hard at work creating their own ‘selfies’ in

Life Orientation. We are a really good looking bunch, as you can see. We used

the medium of paper and paint. We are very proud of the end products. So, if

you don’t see us through the week, you will see us on the paper.

What’s happening the following week?

Our 2020 Sports Day was a great

success. Staff gathered from 7.00 am to

begin setting up gazebo's and event

equipment for the day’s activities.

Children and staff arrived dressed in

their coloured house t-shirts to show

their allegiance to their respective

houses.

The field events, the sprints, started

promptly at 8h30 with great

enthusiasm. The novelty races

provided a good blend of fun and mass

participation, with events such as the

three legged-races and water balloon

relay, but also fierce competition

between Houses.

The team relays always provide great excitement.

Eland started off with a bang, they turned up in

their numbers but did not clinch the deal. Roan

supported each other, they cheered despite the

increasingly inevitable result of third place. They

are the house that exemplifies the phrase, ‘It’s not

the winning but the taking part that counts.’

Impala House sprinted ahead and emerged

victorious! The day ended with Parent's relay

races and the Tug of War.

Well done to all parents and children for creating

such a positive, enthusiastic school spirit on the

day; a great display for all our CityKidz family.

Thanks also to our staff especially, Mrs Strydom

and Mr Hill, who put in many hours of work,

particularly before the event in preparing for a

spectacular well-run Sports Day.

School Spirit - IP DEPUTY PRINCIPAL Mrs Krain

P A G E 3 E D I T I O N 6

The Valentine’s Civvies Day was disappointing in the Intersen Phase as not many children dressed

up according to our dress up theme. This got me thinking. What do you remember most about

your school days? I am very sure it is not the lessons you had to attend, tests or exams that you

had to write. The times I remember fondly are the civvies days, the sports days and the special

celebration days, e.g Mother’s Day. These were the days that would bring the whole school

together and create an atmosphere of excitement and school spirit.

School spirit is the heart of the school. It is defined as a feeling of pride and enthusiasm toward the

school you attend. It is about wearing your school uniform correctly and having a strong

emotional connection with that school. But school spirit goes beyond this, it is about getting

involved in school activities and becoming part of the school.

When you take pride in your school you will work harder and will be more invested in the school.

School spirit is contagious, learners who show enthusiasm and take part in school activities will

encourage their peers to take part in these activities. This will boost not only the morale of the

school but also the academic performance of the school as there is a strong link between school

spirit and academic performance.

Let us, the teachers and parents encourage the children and learners to get involved in the

school activities and help build the school spirit of CityKidz. Let us encourage our children to take

part in the civvies days and create the heart of the school.

Zulu Lessons in Grade 1’s

On Wednesday the Grade 1C and Grade 1D classes joined forces and had a fun Zulu lesson by learning a

traditional Zulu dance and song.

The children listened to uThemba uthi and then children danced and performed the actions. This helped

improve listening skills. Dancing also helps children develop balance, coordination and motor sequencing skills.

It also helps build children’s awareness of rhythm. Gross motor skills allow children to move large muscles. The

dance movements performed certainly supported gross motor coordination such as, raising and lowering arms

and swaying arms back and forth, lifting and lowering legs and following the rhythm of the vibey song.

They certainly had an enjoyable time with Teacher Sane.
