TERM DATES
Dear Parents and Caregivers
Welcome to Week 5 Term 2 2018. It seems hard to believe that we are nearly half way through the term.
Grand friends Day
Last Thursday we celebrated Grand Friends Day both in the school and with the parish communities. Fr. John celebrated Mass with some of our children and lots of our Grand Friends. The Mass was a wonderful celebration and the school choir under the guidance of Lynne Liebich sang beautifully. Following the Mass, the Grand Friends moved into the Parish Centre for a wonderful morning tea hosted by the Parents and Friends. The church was full during Mass and the crowd seem to double in the Parish Centre. The conversation over morning tea was full of excitement and enthusiasm for the school visit. It must be noted that some Grand Friends drove from such places as Mt. Gambier and Millicent while others drove from the northern suburbs of Adelaide. The classroom visits went well, and I witnessed lots of activities for the Grand Friends and children to participate in together. The morning concluded with a small concert provided by the choir and rumour has it that some of the Grand Friends were dancing when the choir sang Amore!
Traffic Matters
It has been brought to my attention that some drivers are not adhering to the speed limits around the school especially at drop off and pick up time. The intersection of Florence and McHenry streets also seems to be causing some concern with drivers queuing across the intersection to join the pickup and drop off lines. Exceeding the speed limit and blocking the intersection is an infringement of the road traffic act and can attract demerit points and a fine if caught. I have been informed by SAPOL that they will be visiting the area on a more frequent basis to ensure that we are all keeping within the law. It is important that we all take children’s safety seriously and drive within the guidelines of the law.
Board Report
The school board met last Wednesday night with a very full agenda. Many policies were discussed including the Disaster and Critical Recovery Plan. The following policies were ratified Administration of Medication Policy, Remote and Isolated work Procedure and the Professional Learning Policy. The board also signed off on the Annual Improvement Plan for 2018. Among other things discussed were the change in Year 6 Camp venue. After some 20 odd years of going to Wirra Way at Strathalbyn our Year 6 children this year will be going to Ballarat and Melbourne. This change of direction is a more appropriate fit to our curriculum particularly around Civics and Citizenship and History with reference to early industrial settlement. Children will visit Sovereign Hill, Eureka and Melbourne Art attractions. The other major initiative that was approved was the Joey’s Long Transition to School Program. This program formalizes our commitment to our new reception students formally starting next year. These children will start attending the program in Term 3 this year and continue one morning per week until the end of the year. The reaction from new and existing parents has been fantastic with most welcoming the
opportunity to attend.
Latest Sports News
Some of our talented kids are playing Football and or Netball at the West
Beach sporting Grounds as part of the SAPSASA Carnival. I haven’t heard a
Netball update but am pleased to share the football score is 7 wins out of 7
games played. Well done to the Footballers and I have every confidence that
that Netballers would be doing equally well.
Regards and God bless

NATIONAL RECONCILIATION WEEK
Franco Canil –Acting APRIM Assistant Principal Religious Identity & Mission
National Reconciliation Week was initiated in 1996 by Reconciliation Australia to celebrate indigenous history and culture in Australia and foster reconciliation discussion and activities. National Reconciliation Week is observed every year between 27 May and 3 June. These dates commemorate two major turning points in the relationship between the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and the wider community.
May 27 is the anniversary of the 1967 referendum, which saw an overwhelming majority of
Australians, agree to remove clauses from the Constitution, which discriminated against Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander people. The changes allowed the Commonwealth to make laws for First
Australians. June 3 is the anniversary of the High Court’s 1992 decision in Mabo, which overturned
the prevailing concept of “terra nullius” (empty land) and recognised native title in the common law of
Australia.
February 13th 2008, was also a momentous day in the history of our country. Then Prime Minister Kevin Rudd apologised on behalf of non-Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians for the past mistreatment of these people. It was a very emotional experience, as the feeling of moving forward towards true Reconciliation was recognised by many.
This year’s theme is: ‘Don’t Keep History a Mystery.’
Reconciliation is an integral part of everyday living. Our lives are built on relationships with others to
whom we have responsibilities. We make choices in the way we treat others and these choices have
consequences. Almost every day, we make an effort to reconcile with others we have hurt through
our words or actions. How many times each day do we use the word ‘sorry”, or feel guilty about what
we have said or done to a member of our family, a work colleague or friend, and try to make amends.
We ask for forgiveness and try to make amends for what we have done and so repair our relationship.
In the Catholic Church we have the Sacrament of Reconciliation. This Sacrament gives us
opportunities to think and act on what happens in our lives. The starting point is reflection, not on our
life but on the life of Christ. It is Jesus’ life and words, the kind of person He was, the things He did,
and the way He treated people, which give meaning to our own lives. In light of Christ’s life we can
then turn to our own life and examine how we have treated others. Next we go to the priest to confess
our sins and then the priest speaks Christ’s words of forgiveness.
Reconciliation Week is an opportunity to affirm and respond to the spiritual dimension of
reconciliation, according to the many traditions alive in Australia today. It is a time for all to learn
about the richness of the culture and spirituality of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It is
also a time to repair relationships between Australians and its first people.
On Friday the school participated in a flag raising ceremony and each day we will be flying the Ngarrindjeri flag. Throughout Reconciliation Week classes will be engaging in many activities as they endeavour to learn and appreciate aspects of Aboriginal culture especially of our local Aboriginal people, the Ngarrindjeri people.

School Banking Information Session.
Our school is excited to offer the Commonwealth Bank School Banking program to all students.
School Banking is a fun, interactive and engaging way for young Australians to learn about money and develop good savings habits. Children who deposit money into their Youthsaver account through School Banking earn Dollarmites tokens, which they can save up and redeem for exciting rewards.
The rewards available during 2018 are:
Twister Power Handball
Secret Scratch Pad
Sparkle Glitter Pens
Glow Light
Mighty Boom Handball
Heat Reactor Pencils

School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school. Our school receives a Regular Savers Contribution of $5 for every 10 deposits processed per student as well as an Annual Contribution which is based on the number of students who made at least one School Banking deposit in the prior year.
School Banking day is going to be Wednesday
We will be holding a School Banking Information Session at our school:
Time: 8.30 – 9.30am Date: Wednesday 6th June Location: at school!

Keeping Imagination alive in primary school kids
Kids spend most of the day in classrooms learning concepts and practising skills. But if you wander past the school at lunchtime, you’ll see them gallivanting through the playground kicking a ball or setting up a “shop” in the sandpit.
Kids inherently want to roam and explore using their imagination, and we are keen to strengthen this practice at OSHC.
We make it a priority to “lighten up” as much possible, giving the kids a chance to tell us what activities they’d like to see in OSHC for the next week or month, rather than our team always setting the schedule. We think this approach not only enables kids to think freely and imaginatively but it also sparks their curiosity to learn more.
If you would like to see some of the activities that kids participate in at OSHC, please call into the OSHC space after school and speak to your Program Coordinator.

Dear St Joseph’s Parents
At some stage of your child’s schooling, you will no doubt be confronted with a range of options for secondary school. It is a difficult
decision and many parents agonise about whether they know enough about schools to ask the right questions.
At St Francis de Sales College we have been delighted over the years to welcome students from St Joseph’s into our College. They
have been well prepared for the demands of secondary education and share our strong sense of the identity of a Catholic school.
We also value the open relationship we have with your Principal, Mr Adrian Brown, and staff of St Joseph’s.
We encourage you to please visit our College Website www.stfrancis.catholic.edu.au or collect an information pack from your school’s
office about the many exciting opportunities our College offers its students and families. We hope they will communicate to you a
strong sense of the wonderful relationships that underpin our learning programs.
If you are interested in enrolling your children at St Francis de Sales College, I would encourage you to lodge an enrolment form as
soon as it is convenient. If you are intending to enrol your child for Year 8 in 2019, I would encourage you to forward your application
as soon as possible. We give priority to, students from our sister Catholic school communities of the Hills-Murray region.
An invitation is extended for you and your family to attend one of our College tours by contacting Vanessa Grave, Marketing and
Communications Manager who will be delighted to assist you. College tours are a great way to see the daily operations of St Francis
de Sales and to have your questions answered by staff, families and students. You will also see how their education at St Joseph’s
has prepared them well for the challenges of secondary education at St Francis de Sales College.
I wish you well in your deliberations and look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
Mr Gavin McGlaughlin
Principal

This year St Joseph’s is supporting St Vincent de Paul for their annual winter appeal. We are seeking donations of any non-perishable foods (e.g. - canned or packet soup, pasta, rice, tinned fruit, cereals, baked beans to name a few) and blankets or unused socks, beanies etc. As we draw closer to winter there are many in our local community who will struggle to keep themselves and their families clothed, fed and warm over the coming months. Any donations to the Winter Appeal are directly supporting those most in need in our local community. Together we can provide basic essentials to resolve dignity in times of need. Your donation can help remove a major stress for families. Your support also helps dedicated volunteers to work with people living in poverty, and provide assistance when life is tough. We will continue collecting donations up to and including Tuesday 19th June. Students can take any food donations to their classroom and clothing items to the clothing bins around the school during this period.
