The Trees That Make So Cal Shady & Green are Dying. Fast.

The Association of California Cities Orange County recent-ly issued a warning about an infestation of a tree pest call the Polyphagous Shot Hole Borer (PSHB) that has reached tree in Mile Square Park. A few trees in the greenbelt of Green Val-ley have also been infected and removed. The beetle has been found to attack hundreds of tree species and been confirmed to reproduce in 48 of them. The pest has caused death and removal of many thousands of trees in Southern California.

If you have a tree that has been invaded, you may not even know it. The shot hole borers are smaller than a sesame seeds, but they bore by the thousands into the bark, then line the tunnel with a species of fungi that disrupts the transport of water and nutrients from roots to leaves. Within a few weeks, their larvae hatch, mature and mate to produce new generations in the tree. Research to find successful treatment is ongoing. The best de-fense is proper watering. Unchecked by natural predators, their numbers exploded during the most severe drought on record, which officially ended last month.

Don’t transport firewood from out of the area because it may be infected. Buy firewood where you burn it. As well as con-cern for homeowners, there is also concern that the ongoing work to address the problem in the parks will be less successful unless homeowners in the area also act. Goggle and you will find numerous articles about this devastation!

Thank You to the Moretti Family for Donating a Tree to
