Since the earliest days of our story Jerusalem has been central to the prayers and life of Jews. Yom Yerushalayim, Jerusalem Day, celebrates when Israeli troops reunified the city under Israeli rule on the 28th day of Iyar during the Six Day War. When Israeli forces reached the Western Wall - the only remaining one from the Second Temple - there was rejoicing. In Deuteronomy 12:11, the Torah states that Jerusalem is the "site where the Lord your God will choose to establish his name." It is there where the Sanctuary will stand for Jews offer sacrifice and gather for worship. Jerusalem is where the People of Israel shall "rejoice before

the Lord." In the eyes of the psalmist, it is a haven that draws the tribes of Israel together. Therefore, "Pray for the well-being of

Jerusalem; / May those who love you be at peace." (Psalm 122:6) Later on Rabbinic sages had deemed Jerusalem the joy of the whole

earth, for there is "no beauty like the beauty of Jerusalem." I myself remember the morning on which I caught my first sunrise

over this beautiful and holy city. Unforgettable. Since the earliest days of our story Jerusalem has been central to the prayers and life of

Jews. Yom Yerushalayim, Jerusalem Day, celebrates when Israeli troops

reunified the city under Israeli rule on the 28th day of Iyar during the Six Day War. When Israeli forces reached the Western Wall - the only

remaining one from the Second Temple - there was rejoicing. The shofar was sounded, prayers were recited, and since that time Jerusalem Day is not celebrated in a particular way nor does it

maintain specific rituals or traditions. But it is a deeply religious day.
