A Malayalam movie, 'Kanyaka Talkies', will open the feature film category of the Indian Panorama at the 44th International Film Festival of India. It is a debut feature film by K.R. Manoj, a national award-winning documentary film-maker.
The film unfolds the plight of a theatre-owner who puts his heart and soul into running the theatre despite heavy odds. The subject has been treated with such an empathy that a B-grade talkies of the 80s and 90s itself becomes a character.
Starring Murali Gopy, Lena and Maniyan Pilla Raju, 'Kanyaka Talkies' was also selected for the competition section at the 15th edition of the Mumbai International Film Festival and in the 'Malayalam Cinema Today' section of the International Film Festival of Kerala.
44th IFFI in Goa; 'Kanyaka Talkies' opens Indian Panorama Feature Section
Veteran film actor and director, Manoj Kumar inaugurated the Indian Panorama Section here today at the ongoing 44th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in the presence of Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Shri Manish Tewari, Secretary, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Shri Bimal Julka and film personalities like Prem Chopra, Subhash Ghai and Manoj Bajpai. Speaking on the occasion Manoj Kumar remembered nostalgic days of films and film making. He suggested that Ministry should institute an award of such stature that even Hollywood vie to deserve it.
Addressing the august gathering, Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Shri Manish Tewari said that the Ministry would look forward to add a special segment on political cinema next year. The Minister further said that the 'film industry in India has attained such an enviable stature inspites and despites of the Government'. He pointed out, what is needed most today is not only the historical document of the journey of Indian cinema but also a biopic with such finesse which may generate a revenue model of its own. The Indian Cinema has left a very significant impact on the very mindset of cinema lovers, he added.
The segment contains 26 feature films and 16 non-feature films. The feature films jury, headed by renowned film-maker and editor, B. Lenin selected 'Kanyaka Talkies' by K. R. Manoj as the opening film of the Panorama. The other films include 101 chodyangal' by Sidhartha Siva, 'Ajana Batas' by Anjan Das and 'Fandry' by Nagraj Manjule. Shri Manish Tewari, the Information and Broadcasting Minister addressed the star
studded inaugural function of 44th International Film Festival of India in Panjim,
Goa today. Shri Tewari said that Film Festivals reinforce the values of pluralism,
diversity, democracy, freedom of thought and expression and the ability to
challenge the conventional. He emphasized that organizing such festivals
underscores and reiterates the core values that define the very idea of India.
The text of Minister's speech is as follows:
“ Year ago when I was given the privilege of being asked by the leadership to
serve as India's minister for information & broadcasting, an office which many
believe is a hangover from the erstwhile socialist era, maybe perhaps
increasingly becoming irrelevant to India's emerging profile. However, one of the
first tasks that I had to perform was to review the preparations for the 43rd
edition of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI), commemorating the
centenary of the Indian film industry.
It indeed intrigued me as to why was the Government is in the business of
organizing film festivals and that too not once but 44 times repeatedly if not
consecutively. After all the Indian film industry had grown in spite and despite of
successive Governments. It rightly resents the probing obtrusiveness of
officialdom.
Should it not be the film industry in all its multi splendored brilliance that should
really be reveling and toasting its own success by inviting the best in the world to
soak in the salubrious climes of its agonies and ecstasies rather than Government
chaperoning the process?
After thinking hard and deep I concluded that in organizing the film festivals, and
we are doing three different festivals in this year alone what we really
underscore and reiterate are the core values that define the very idea of India.
Shri Manish Tewari addresses the 44th International Film Festival of India in Panjim, Goa
Film Festivals Reinforce Values of Pluralism, Diversity, Democracy and Ability to Challenge Conventional, says Information and Broadcasting Minister
<< 45 >> December 2013
JOURNAL OF ANDHRA PRADESH FILM CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
What we really seek to reinforce are the values of pluralism, diversity,
democracy, freedom of thought and expression and the ability to challenge
the conventional that the founding fathers of the modern Indian state strived,
struggled and stood for.
An Ethos that we have carefully nurtured over the past sixty-six years by
embedding it in the collective psyche of our people. Perhaps these thoughts
were also in the heart and mind of India's first Prime Minister Pandit
Jawaharlal Nehru, one of the foremost thought leaders of his generation, as
he ignited the torch of the film festival movement by inaugurating the first
IFFI in 1952.
What we reject with vehemence is any assault on these libertarian values
that seek to constrain our liberal spaces, constrict freethinking, and
circumscribe non- conformism that is the essence of the renewal and
rejuvenation of the great human experiment.
The twentieth century was witness to horrendous trials and tribulations. A
century that saw the human mind elevating death and destruction to an
industrial scale by using chemical, biological and nuclear science for weapons
of mass destruction. The first decade of the twenty first century has been no
better with these and other instruments of death and destruction being
honed to an efficiency that makes even ruthlessness blush with envy.
However all throughout this train of tragedy cinema performed a yeoman
role in celebrating the indestructibility and immortality of the human spirit.
It provided soup to the soul and kinship to the kindred.
Over the next ten days as we soak ourselves in the extravaganza that has
been laid out I urge you to kindly reflect on the contribution that people of
the arts and literature need to make to ensure that the values that underpin
this effort are preserved, protected and persevered with so that we can build
a world free of fear of monologues and monotheistic manifestations.”
