On October 12 and 13, the Saint Paul Confirmation candidates went to the SEEK Retreat led by Sister Cathy Bauer. The retreat took the candidates from the comforts of their homes in Florence and Union to downtown Covington to visit Mother of God Church, Welcome House, Parish Kitchen and The Emergency Shelter of Northern Kentucky.

Sister Cathy took time to get to know the students at Mother of God Church. There she talked to them about homelessness. She asked the students to give descriptions of who is homeless, why they are homeless and what they looked like.

Then, we walked to Parish Kitchen, Welcome House and The Emergency Shelter of Northern Kentucky (ESNKY). At each location, the students heard what services were offered and who their clients were.

On Thursday, students met a young student from NKU who was an intern at ESNKY. When she was in 6th Grade, she was homeless ended up at Welcome House with her mother and siblings. Her family stayed at Welcome House for a little over a year. All the while, they worked on homes with Housing Opportunities of Northern Kentucky to earn access to affordable housing.

On Friday, the students met four gentlemen who were homeless. Jeff was an all-star athlete, John- John a refugee and “lost boy” from South Sudan, Michael, a man who simply made bad choices and Alan, who was not quite ready to bare his soul to the kids. The gentlemen spoke candidly with the students about their upbringing, how they be-came homeless and their lives as a homeless person. They also talked about how they were trying to get themselves back on their feet.

Sr. Cathy then led the 8th graders back to Mother of God to discuss and explore solu-tions to the perceptions of homelessness and the realities. She also challenged the stu-dents to find solutions to help those who were homeless.

News from St. Henry

District High School

By Maggie Tagher

Hello, my name is Maggie Tagher, and I will be writing updates about St. Henry District High School this year! I am a member of multiple clubs at the school including philanthropic club, art club, yearbook club, and National Honor Society. I am very excited to keep everyone at St. Paul Parish updated with the events happening at St. Henry! Since the beginning of the school year, there have been many interesting events which include home-coming, Shanty Town, and Youth 2000. To begin, the boys and girls’ homecoming soccer games oc-curred on October 6 and the dance happened the next day on the 7th. Both the boys and girls varsity soccer teams won their games with the girls beating Conner High School and the boys beating Boone County High School. Everyone enjoyed the week preceding the dance because student council designed each day to have a different theme such as pajama day and U.S.A. themed day. National Honor Society organized a service project on October 8 called Shanty Town, in which stu-dents spent the night in boxes at the school on a Sunday and went to school the next day. The pur-pose was to raise money and awareness for peo-ple experiencing homelessness. It was a huge suc-cess, and the club was able to donate all of the funds to the Greater Cincinnati Homeless Coali-tion.

Also, the Youth 2000 retreat was held at SHDHS this year, which was an awesome opportunity for the school! The Youth 2000 retreat is a full week-end for young adults in the diocese to gather and let their hearts grow closer to God. Everyone who attended said that it was one of the best weekends that they had ever had, that their faith had grown, and that they felt closer to God than they had ever felt. Overall, the past month has been wonderful at St. Henry and I can’t wait to continue to give every-one at St. Paul Parish more information about events at the school!

Continued St. Paul Confirmation Retreat By Katie Hubbart

Congratulations St. Paul Preschool! St. Paul Preschool serves as an introduction to the St Paul

Catholic School and parish community. We are a state li-

censed facility with qualified early childhood educators. We

recently had our state inspection where we received zero de-

ficiencies! We provide a unique, safe, caring and stimulating

environment where learning flourishes. Our staff has exten-

sive practical experience with young children and continues to

develop professionally by completing training on a yearly

basis. We accommodate the broad range of children's needs

by addressing the intellectual, emotional, physical and social

aspects of each child as an individual. Our goal is to help children become inde-

pendent, self-confident, inquisitive learners. If you are interested in learning more

about our program or would like to set up a tour, please contact Shelly Lemmond,

Preschool Director at 859-786-6670 or [email protected].

The Seek Retreat by Jake M. and Andrew T.

First, we arrived at Mother of God Church in Covington, KY. We talked about those who are less fortunate and homeless with Sister Cathy. We also got to do some activities, like work in groups to develop our own homeless shelters and play games.

From Mother of God Church, we walked down to the Parish Kitchen. At the Parish Kitchen, we learned about the meals that are served there, the people who eat there, the staff who works there, and much more about their mission to help the homeless and the less fortunate.

After the Parish Kitchen, we walked down to The Emergency Shelter of NKY. At The Emer-gency Shelter, we saw where some of the homeless people stay overnight. We also saw that the shelter had many toiletries, snacks, and clothing for the homeless, thanks to kind people’s donations. We also learned that this shelter serves a continental breakfast for the homeless men and women that stay there.

Going into this trip many students, including us, did not know what to expect. All of us were aware of homelessness, but none of us had to really put ourselves in their shoes. We walked to the Parish Kitchen, seeing for ourselves where all those donated canned goods and other foods went, and realizing that some people relied on these types of places to keep them alive. Last, we walked to the Welcome House and saw where homeless people come to survive. Overall, this trip really put in perspec-tive what these people’s lives are like. Also it gave us many ways to help out, not just by donating money or canned goods. As we were talking about our experience, I heard many students talk about how grateful they were to have the things they do, and how they would be willing to help at out these shelters anytime.

“John-John really impacted me because when he was 9 years old he had a machine gun and was serving in war. And at 12 he was a prisoner of war. And at 14 he was a refu-gee.” - Griffin E.

“The Parish Kitchen is a kitchen feeding the homeless and other people who can’t afford food.” – Michelle P.

“The way people are treated at the shelters are amaz-ing. I didn’t know shelters existed for the homeless. It’s so upsetting that some people had an amazing life com-ing their way and things just didn’t come out the perfect way.” – Arianna H.

“The Parish Kitchen surprised me by the amount of people who go in and out to eat….It surprised me all the beds and food that they need at the Emergency Shelter.” – Rafael P.

“Going to the retreat opened my eyes about homeless people because I thought that when people became homeless it was all their fault. Now I know that lots of things can happen that you can’t control and the only thing you can do is come back and try your best to fix it.” – Paige O.

“When we went to Parish Kitchen, I noticed how fortu-nate we are for being able to provide our own food. This trip made me realize that not all of God’s people are taken completely care of and I need to help them.” – Madison M.

By St. Paul Student Council

This October, St. Paul Student Council took on the mission of crazy, fun fall activities. Our first activity was a Halloween carving and decorating contest among the classes. Each class got a small pumpkin to work with. The pumpkin was decorated any way the class decided and the winner got an out of uniform day. The contest was judged by the Student Council and the most clever idea won.

The next fun activity the Student Council took on was fun candy bags called Boo Bags. Boo Bags are little bags of candy that anyone at St. Paul could buy and send to anyone else at St. Paul. It was a fun way to show appreciation for teachers, friends, or family.

Another fun thing we did was the Junior High Halloween dance. This dance was super fun to plan and was great! We planned a photobooth, a gaming room (complete with Just Dance), and card tables. Food was completely free and was delicious. The decorations set the mood for the dance. We also planned costume contests at the dance as well.

Our last October activity was held on Halloween day. In the morning, the spirit committee paraded through the school with the preschool through second grade. Later on in the day, 3rd through 5th graders did festive games in the gym and 6th through 8th graders did a fun scav-enger hunt. We asked the teachers to give us educational clues so no one was slacking! Happy Autumn!

The dust has finally settled on the 2017 Blue & Gold Bash. The St. Paul PTO was able to raise funds for the school and give our hardworking parents a fun night out. It was a fantastic evening, filled with friends and fellowship as the attendees enjoyed the Blue/Gold game, Ring Toss, craft beers, bourbon tastings, delicious catered food, and music throughout the night. Some were also lucky to win raffle and auction items. We hope to see many new faces next year to organize and attend the 2018 Bash. The St Paul PTO would like to take this opportunity to thank our St. Paul fami-lies and local businesses that sent in donations for the raffles and silent auc-tion. We received gift certificates, gift cards, monetary donations, tickets, beer, wine, liquor, lottery tickets, Legos, American Girl items, firepit, supplies for entertaining, sports fan items, golf accessories, baking supplies, handmade items, and so much more! Thank you to all who purchased raffle tickets. We are also grateful for the Blue & Gold Bash Committee, Corporate Sponsors, and all of those who worked to make our 2017 Blue & Gold Bash a great suc-cess.

Thank you so much to the Bereavement Committee at St. Paul for the beautiful Celebration of Life and Mass for our Father, Robert Rice.

To Father David Gamm for his special message, Steve Mason, the Adult Choir and Julie Maile Wahba for the lovely music and especially "Ave Maria", which was Dad's favorite.

To Marla Kelly and Carol Cameron who offered the petitions and readings. To the Eucharistic Ministers of Holy Com-munion, who were all special friends of Dad's.

To Joyce Nienaber who assisted us in preparing Dad's mass to his specific re-quests. So many friends and family were touched by this beautiful, personal cele-bration.

To Janet Flick and the members of the Bereavement Committee who prepared the wonderful desserts, enjoyed by all!

Dad was very proud to be a member of St. Paul Church and the Celebration of Life Mass on September 6, 2017 was a beautiful tribute to Dad and his faith in Jesus Christ.

Thank you,

The Family of Bob Rice

The plan is to leave on Thursday, January 18 returning on Saturday, January 20. More information to come.

Families of Life Baby Shower: Thanks to the many people who par-ticipated in the baby shower for the Hagenseker family. They were very surprised at all the gifts, diapers, gift cards and money and are extremely grateful. All three of the boys, Lin-coln, Benjamin and Theodore, are home and doing well. At our recent visit, we sat and talked with Mon and got to hold the babies. Alaina has a very positive attitude and is so excited about the boys. Although it is very exhausting, she really seems to be enjoying them. Her mother-in-law tries to help when she can and Alaina gets a break once Joshua gets home from work when she is able to get a couple hours sleep before bedtime routine begins. Two of the boys will be returning to the hospital for hernia operations, which we were told was not uncommon for preemie babies. We ask that you continue to keep them and the entire family in your prayers. Hopefully they will be able to move from their apartment into a home in the near future. Again, thanks so much for your generosity and for making life a little easier for the Hagenseker family.

20-week abortion ban: On October 3, the House passed a bill that would ban abortions after 20 weeks. The bill, sponsored by Representative Trent Franks (R-Ariz.), would make it a crime to perform or attempt an abor-tion after 20 weeks of pregnancy. Consequences include the possibility of a fine, up to five years in prison, or both. The bill allows exceptions in cases of rape, incest or to save the life of the mother and does not penalize women for seeking to get abortions after 20 weeks. The bill faces a tough sell in the Senate, and that is what

Group Beth contacted SVdP looking for help with her rent that was due the same day. She needed $750.00. Beth is a single mother with 4 girls and normally works two jobs. Recently, she began having issues with her balance and diz-zy spells and has started to go through testing to determine the cause. She was told by doctors that she cannot work or drive. Also she cannot venture out without someone with her. Beth is nervous about her health and is besides herself fear that she will be evicted. She does not know where she would go and cannot afford to move. Beth has never sought out help before and didn't know where to turn but found the Community Action Council (CAC). They gave her several other agencies, one being SVdP. CAC did not have any funds to immediately give her but did up an appointment for later this month, unfortunately after her rent was due. The other agencies she tried also could not help. Beth was so sincere and nice and really did not want to ask for help for herself, but need it for her daughters. She re-cently lost several pieces of her girls’ clothing and bedding during a base-ment flood. This left them with one set of sheets for each of the girls’ beds, one blanket and a sleeping bag. She does not have a bed for herself. There was no couch so I am not sure where Beth sleeps. My heart goes out to Beth because she has worked so hard to give her girls a good home and her illness is turning her life up-side down. We gave her some food, clothing vouchers for her-self and her 4 girls and vouchers to get a couple of blankets. She told us her girls are used to not having things and actually like shopping at the consign-ment stores. We were also able to help with a good portion of her rent, enough to satisfy her landlord so that worry had been taken away for now. We also found some other bedding items that we gave her. When I came back to give her these items, her sister was coming over to take her and her youngest daughter to the SVdP store. They were both excited to be able to go shop-ping. Please pray for Beth and her girls and for all those who are in need of our help. God Bless you for all you give to our conference. Without your help, we could not help the many people in our area.
