“ Are those equal, those who knowAnd those who do not know?

(Qur’an - 39: 9)”

Jamia Hamdard was established by late Hakeem Abdul Hameed, a world-renowned practitioner of Unani Medicineof the 20th century who attracted people from around the world, including eminent personalities such as PrinceCharles. Jamia Hamdard was the crystallization of his dream to make a significant contribution to the IndianSociety. He had set his mind on raising the educational standard of the people, for he remembered the lines of theHoly Qur’an:

By the time he died in 1999 at the age of 91, he had set-up 25 institutions, covering diverse fields from healthand medicine to Islamic culture in India and itscontribution to the Indian civilization. As a practicingHakeem, it was his dream to develop Unani system ofmedicine on modern scientific lines. A greatphilanthropist, thinker and visionary that he was,Hakeem Abdul Hameed worked with unparallel zeal toachieve his teachings of public charity, particularly inthe areas of health and education, so that theeducationally backward and psychologicallydemoralized Muslim minority could avail the benefitsof modern education.

And Allah has sent down To you the Book and Wisdom And

taught you what you Knew not (before) And great is the

Grace of Allah unto you.

(Qur’an - 4: 113)

In 1962, he established the Institute of History of Medicineand Medical Research. In 1963, he set up the IndianInstitute of Islamic Studies to promote the study of Islamicculture and civilization.

In 1962, Hamdard National Foundation was created toreceive and disburse the profits earned by Hamdard (Wakf )Laboratories. The Foundation has taken up charitable causesin the areas of education, medical relief and the advancementof knowledge, consistent with the principles of the trueteachings of Islam. Hamdard Tibbi College was set up inGali Qasim Jaan, Old Delhi in 1963. It was later shifted toJamia Hamdard Campus in 1980 to provide education inUnani Medicine to students so that the heritage of Unani Medicine largely available in Arabic and Persian languages ispassed on to the students of future generations.

In 1972, Hamdard College of Pharmacy was set up to provide education and training in all branches of Pharmacy. Some of the other institutions established by him include Hamdard Education Society, Hamdard Study Circle,Hamdard Public School, Hamdard Institute of Historical Research, Ghalib Academy, Centre for South Asian Studiesand Business & Employment Bureau. Later in 1989, many of these institutions were amalgamated into JamiaHamdard which was given the status of Deemed to be University by UGC. Today, Jamia Hamdard excels in impartinghigh quality education.

All his efforts have been highly acknowledged in India as well as abroad. Many foreign visitors to Jamia Hamdardhave observed that an institute of this magnitude can be conceived only by Governments and hardly by individuals.A delegation of Editors of Arabic newspapers observed that the greatest contribution of the Indian Muslims afterIndependence was the establishment of Jamia Hamdard & other educational institutions of Hamdard. Hakeem sahebwas honoured with several national and international awards including the prestigious Avicenna Award presented bythe erstwhile USSR in 1983. He was also conferred Padma Shri in 1965 and Padma Bhushan in 1991 by theGovernment of India, for his contributions in education, health and social service. He was an honorary member ofthe Academy of Medical Sciences of the Islamic Republic of Iran and Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University,Aligarh. In October 2000, the Research Centre for Islamic History, Art and Culture (IRCICA), Istanbul, Turkey, presented IRCICA Award for Patronage in Preservation of Cultural Heritage & Promotion of Scholarship to Hakeemsaheb, posthumously.

Hakeem Abdul Hameed aimed at all-round growth and happiness to the society by providing opportunities foreducation and development of services and health care. It was his pioneering spirit that has always inspired JamiaHamdard to successfully undertake multidimensional projects in the service of society.

Officers of Jamia Hamdard

Hakeem Abdul Hameed, the founder of Jamia Hamdard, had a vision to develop Jamia Hamdard into aninstitution of excellence imparting modern professional education with special emphasis on Unani medicine andIslamic studies. Today it has evolved into an excellent centre of higher learning, fulfilling the objects of the wakfwhich has been funding the University ever since its inception.

As a mark of tribute and thanks to the Almighty Allah for bestowing His guiding spirit to its founder and hisassociates, Jamia Hamdard adopted a seal inscribed with the following holy verse (ayat) from the holy Qur’an:

Visiting Scientists from Europe

Iranian delegation paying homage at the tomb of the founder

Justice Ahmadi, former Chief Justice of India and Teesta Setalvad, responding to questions after a Value Education Lecture

“ he (the Prophet, may peace be upon him) instructs them in the book and wisdom.

(Qur’an - 2: 62)”

Introduction to Jamia Hamdard

Ever since the inception of Jamia Hamdard, this holy verse(ayat) has been a source of inspiration and guidance for allthose associated with its management and administration. Asan Islamic charity, wakf has played the vital financial role inthe making of Jamia Hamdard. It is ironical that the Muslimscontinue to be one of the most educationally backwardcommunities of India, despite the fact that acquiringknowledge has been given great emphasis in the holy Qur’an.The Holy Prophet (Pbuh) also emphasised that ‘theacquisition of knowledge is obligatory on every Muslim’. He(Pbuh) preached his followers that

“ Inspired by the Holy Qur’an and exhorted by the Prophet (Pbuh),Muslims became the torch-bearers of knowledge and civilization inthe medieval period, but are lagging behind in present times. LateHakeem Sahib wisely chose education and pursuit of knowledge ashis prime objectives when he decided to convert HamdardDawakhana into a wakf, a charity dedicated to fulfilling educationaland health needs of Indian Muslims. Hamdard (wakf ) continues toprovide generous grant to the university for buildings, equipmentsand salaries of staff.

Jamia Hamdard was inaugurated by late Shri Rajiv Gandhi onAugust 01, 1989. In his impressive speech, the Prime Ministerapplauded the efforts of Hakeem Abdul Hameed in setting upinstitutions of learning which were emerging in the form of a“Deemed to be University”. He said, “This will enable (theMuslim) minority to go forward and help India to marchforward”.

The University concentrates on professional courses which equip thestudents to get placements in the highly competitive job market ofthe country.

wisdom is (like) the lost animal of a believer; wherever he finds it, catches hold of it
