HP ProCurve Survivable Branch Communication zl Module Converge, secure, and simplify your business with expansive networking solutions Solution brief The customer challenge : branch sur vivability For most organizations today, remote users in branch locations are accustomed to reliable communications via distributed PBX or IP-PBX technology. However, when it come s to expansive communications and collaboration , they are dependent on the servers in the headquarters data cente r for their communication and collaboration needs. This dependency makes them vulnerable to losing their communication and collaboration capab ilities when the wide area network (WAN ) is unavailable. These remote users nee d the ability to make external phone calls and sustain internal peer-to-peer communications such as instant messaging (IM), voice, video, and desktop sharing even when the data center cannot be reached. They need a communications solution arch itected for branch survivabili ty and one that contains the telephony features they have come to expe ct: the ability to call any phone number, and voice, video, IM, and desktop collaboration with local colleagues. HP ProCurve Survivable Branch Communication zl Module provides these solution features and more.

The HP ProCurve solution:Survivable Branch Communicationzl ModuleHP ProCurve Survivable Branch Communication

zl Module is a new component for the HP andMicrosoft® Unified Communications and Collaborationsolution. Survivable Branch Communication combinesMicrosoft Communications Server “14” and softwarefrom HP ProCurve—including a public switchedtelephone network (PSTN) to Voice over InternetProtocol (VoIP) gateway, a graphical user interface(GUI), management interfaces, and an applicationprogramming interface (API) to the switch itself, all integrated on a module that fits in the chassisof HP ProCurve Switch 8200zl and 5400zl seriesproducts.

Survivable Branch Communication provides primaryMicrosoft Communications Server “14” services tothe branch user. In normal operation, SurvivableBranch Communication leverages centrally hostedservices and provides toll bypass by directinginteroffice calls across the WAN when this routingprovides cost-optimized calling. Survivable BranchCommunication also forms a part of the dialingplan, and other Communications Server users atother locations can leverage the local PSTN portson Survivable Branch Communication for least-costcall routing and toll bypass. In the event it loses

connectivity to the data center, Survivable BranchCommunication is an intelligent module that “knows”it can no longer leverage the centrally hosted servicesor PSTN interfaces that are not local. SurvivableBranch Communication notifies its connectedMicrosoft Communicator clients and end users that it isoperating in a degraded mode and that some featuresmay not be available. Thus, if a user wishes to call auser at another company location, Survivable BranchCommunication directs the calling client to place aPSTN call via Survivable Branch Communication’sPSTN interfaces—all without requiring any different

behavior on behalf of the calling client. Requeststo use other central services such as Live Meetingare rejected due to the service not being availableSurvivable Branch Communication has call contromanagement capabilities and can route voice call

based on the Communications Server enterprise-wdial plan.

Branch simplicity, security, andsavingsThe HP ProCurve Survivable Branch Communicatiozl Module requires no additional IT infrastructureor management at the branch. With SurvivableBranch Communication, there is no need to rackadditional hardware, run power cords, or addEthernet connections at the branch. One of the chadvantages of Survivable Branch Communication that only the network needs to be managed, not twor more systems.

Survivable Branch Communication is a highly secunetworking solution, engineered to meet HP qualitstandards. Companies today need security solutiothat address risks from both inside and outside thenetwork. Perimeter defense is an essential first laynetwork security that involves firewall/virtual privanetwork (VPN)/intrusion prevention system (IPS)protection along with Web 2.0 content awarenessProCurve provides these perimeter solutions in

conjunction with our ProCurve Open NetworkEcosystem (ONE) Alliance partners. For interiorprotection, the HP ProCurve Threat ManagementServices (TMS) zl Module provides a second layerdefense to protect sensitive data.

HP ProCurve protects your investment by adheringindustry standards, preparing the way for adoptioof the next generation of unified communicationsand collaboration capabilities. Survivable BranchCommunication is backed by the ProCurve Lifetime
