OREGON PARTNERSHIP FOR ALZHEIMER’S RESEARCH (OPAR) REQUEST FOR RESEARCH PROPOSALS

Oregon Tax Checkoff for Alzheimer’s Research Fund Through Oregon Partnership for Alzheimer’s Research (OPAR) Administered by the OHSU Layton Aging & Alzheimer's Disease Center RFA RELEASE DATE: Monday, December 5, 2016 LETTER OF INTENT DEADLINE: Monday February 6, 2017 APPLICATION DEADLINE (for accepted letters of intent): 5 p.m. Tuesday April 18, 2017 The Oregon Partnership for Alzheimer’s Research (OPAR) is pleased to announce its 2017 request for research proposals to be considered competitively for funding available through the Oregon Tax Checkoff Alzheimer’s Research Fund. Applications are invited for one-year projects of up to $30,000. We anticipate funding for one grant. The first step is a Letter of Intent. Letters of Intent will be reviewed during the week following submission and applicants will be notified by February 24, 2016, if a full proposal is requested. These funds have been made available by Oregonians through the Oregon Income Tax Charitable Checkoff Program. Created by the Oregon legislature, this program has had tremendous benefit to Oregon communities. This research granting program is organized through the Oregon Partnership for Alzheimer’s Research (OPAR), a state-wide program administered through the Layton Aging & Alzheimer's Disease Center at OHSU. The mission of OPAR is to foster the development of promising research on Alzheimer’s disease in Oregon. Priority for funding is given to investigators just entering the field of dementia research. Applicants may be investigators in Oregon who are launching their careers including senior graduate students (for doctoral dissertation research), fellows, and junior investigators (please review guidelines for further information). Applications will not be considered for established researchers. Special attention will be given to projects that foster collaboration across disciplines or institutions and to proposals that lay the foundation for future federal or foundation grants. Grants may be awarded to clinical, basic, or social scientists for support of research that will advance the understanding, treatment or prevention of Alzheimer’s disease. Appropriate fields include the basic neurosciences, genetics, nursing, social work, epidemiology, sociology, psychology, psychiatry, public health, economics, counseling, delivery of health care services, and others relevant to Alzheimer’s research or practice. The proposed research should investigate relevant scientific questions that will improve our understanding of Alzheimer’s disease or related dementias and/or that will advance treatment or prevention strategies. For information about this program contact Allison Lindauer, PhD, NP [email protected] at 503-494-6370.

SPADO - State Plan For Alzheimer’s Disease In Oregon Roadmaps For Diagnosing Dementia And Help For Caregivers

The State Plan on Alzheimer’s Disease in Oregon (SPADO) was released in July 2012. Several recommendations were developed, one of which was to ensure that Oregon had a dementia capable licensed healthcare workforce. Since this is a very broad goal, the workgroup decided early on that the initial focus should be on creating a tool for health care providers that would help with the screening and diagnosing of dementia. This recommendation was based on information received in town hall meetings that took place during the developmental process of SPADO. Many family members stated they either had difficulty getting a diagnosis, or, if they did, they did not know where to go to get information. Diagnosing dementia and providing patients and families the care they need is often challenging for primary care teams. Benefits of dementia screening and early diagnosis include early treatment of reversible causes, connecting family members to care support services, and planning for end-of-life care wishes, among others. SPADO has created an evidence-based primary care provider workflow tool for identifying patients with dementia who otherwise may not be recognized. This tool also provides the primary care provider a dementia diagnostic assessment algorithm to determine other causes of memory loss and to determine the dementia disease type. Finally, the road map assists the primary care team to educate the family on how to prepare for near and intermediate future needs, and to create realistic expectations based on the trajectory of dementia disease. In addition, without a dementia diagnosis individuals, and their family members, who may be concerned about cognitive problems often struggle to receive the education and support they need to effectively navigate the disease. To that end, SPADO has created two tools to guide an individual (or their family) who may be concerned about cognitive impairment. The first tool is “Concerned About Dementia?” which helps individuals recognize the common signs of dementia and gives guidance on what steps to take to obtain (or rule out) a dementia diagnosis. The goal of the second tool, “After A Dementia Diagnosis, What To Do Next”, is to prepare them to better understand and come to terms with the diagnosis, and to discuss future care needs. This road map tool is useful to promote family members and caregivers to collaborate with their primary care team to provide safe, compassionate, and cost-effective care for persons with dementia. You can go to www.oregonspado.org/resources to download copies of these tools. If you would like to have copies sent to you, please contact [email protected]. , safe medication management and challenging behaviors. Classes are free thanks to funding from the state of Oregon.
