There are more pro-grams under developmentfor Alvarado-Haack atAdelante, Inc. “I am cur-rently making strides tomerge my two passions:youth and violence-freelives for women,” she toldLa Prensa recently.

“This plan includes thedevelopment of a teen/fe-male support group thatwill address healthy life/relationship choices. Manyof our young women havewitnessed domestic vio-lence between their parentsor have already experi-enced domestic violence intheir own, young relation-ships and as young peopledon’t know how to recog-nize the unhealthy warn-ing signs or don’t knowthat this is unacceptable.”

Her passion for workingwith young people contin-ues on several other fronts. She is mentoring two highschool students, Deanna andSophia Vásquez, as part ofthe Latino Youth Mentoringprogram. And as a studentherself, Alvarado-Haack is amember of the University ofToledo’s Latino StudentUnion and serves as thatbody’s secretary.

Alvarado-Haack enteredUT on a part-time basis in2000 after having spent about10 years as a homemaker. When her children gained alittle independence, thegraduate of Springfield HighSchool went to college tomajor in business programs. She is considering a switchto Law and Social Thoughtand has about two years to gobefore earning her degree byher estimate.

Obviously with her work, motherhood, college and

Adelante’s Alvarado-Haack(Continued from Page 1)

mentoring, one would thinkthat Alvarado-Haack’s platemight be full.

One would be wrong. She has somehow man-

aged to find time for a littlepolitical activity on theside, for example, her workwith the school renewal levycampaign.

“All four of my childrenare TPS students,” saidAlvarado-Haack. “I want tostay active and make surethey are getting a qualityeducation. I couldn’t passup this opportunity to helpTPS. If the levy doesn’t pass,it will affect children imme-diately.”

So, that’s everything,right?

Wrong.Alvarado-Haack has

carved a few precious mo-ments out of her schedule tobe a part of City Council-man Frank Szollosi’s elec-tion campaign. She will becoordinating his campaignvolunteers.

She is an active memberof the Lucas County His-panic/Latino DemocraticCaucus and a member ofMescala, a Spanish culturalawareness group.

And, she has plans for yetanother major project.Alvarado-Haack hopes tohelp organize a Latino Par-ent Association that will of-fer support to and try to getthe involvement of Latinoparents throughout the city.

So that’s really about allshe does.

But, of course, if her tele-phone rings before this ar-ticle goes to press, it’s a safebet that we have probablymissed a few projects hereand there.

PONTIAC, MI (AP): Fran-cisco Valiente says he even-tually has to start over. Butfor now, he is mourning.

Valiente last Thursdayleft Michigan for his home-town of Puebla, Mexico, where he planned to buryhis pregnant wife and fivechildren killed when a firedestroyed their Pontiachome last week.

The trip would bring to aclose a decade-long jour-ney that brought Valienteand his family from Méxicoto the United States, wherethey crisscrossed the coun-try in search of opportunity.

Valiente and his wife,Guillermina Carrasco, metwhen they were just 6 yearsold. They came to the UnitedStates 10 years later.

“We escaped fromschool to come here,”Valiente told the Detroit FreePress through friend DebraEhrmann, who translatedthe words he spoke in Span-ish.

After starting their fam-ily and living in Los Ange-les, New York and New Jer-sey, the couple moved toPontiac, where Valiente said

friends were living and wageswere better.

It was there that the 26-year-old mother and her five chil-dren—7-year-old Grecia, 4-year-old twins Francisco andEduardo, 2-year-old Veronicaand 15-month-old Selena—were killed in the July 29 fire.Guillermina Valiente Carrascowas seven months pregnantwith a fourth daughter.

Francisco Valiente at timeswas nearly in tears as he spokeof his family, who he had spentthat day with celebrating re-cent birthdays.

“My wife was a very goodperson,” he said.

He spoke of how his chil-dren enjoyed watching Mexi-can movies on television andhow his twin boys asked him tobuy them a horse they couldride back to México.

Fire officials say the firestarted when a power stripmelted in the family’s two-story partial brick home. In-vestigators found no smokedetectors.

Valiente said none were inthe house.

Laws to prevent similar situ-ations may get tougher thisfall.

Spurred by the Valientefamily’s tragedy, State Sen.Shirley Johnson, R-RoyalOak, has introduced a pack-age of six bills that wouldrequire all rental propertiesto be wired with smoke de-tectors. Homeowners whopurchase fire suppressionsystems or alarms also wouldreceive a $100 tax credit. The Senate is set to vote onthe measure next month.

“We don’t want fire trag-edies like this to continue,”Johnson’s spokeswomanRebecca DeVooght said.“We believe this legislationcan save people’s lives, andwe’re hoping that what hap-pened last week will be theimpetus to get this legisla-tion approved.”

Michigan law currentlysets broad standards for therepair and maintenance ofrental properties, sayinghomes must be fit for use andpremises must be in reason-able condition.

Individual municipali-ties must then decide whatthey will require landlordsto provide, then enforce theirown laws and inspect homesfor compliance.

ARIES: (March 21-April 20)Any family squabbles may come as a result of tensions.

Be at your best and don’t let anyone spoil your upbeatmood. Once harmony is restored, turn your attentions tomaking plans with a few good friends. You are inclined tobe jealous and possessive of a mate. Stay cool.

TAURUS: (April 21 - May 21)Think before you speak. That temper of yours may flare

without any provocation. Your idealistic side usually winsout, so try real hard to follow your dreams. Hopefullysomething that has been bothering you for the last severalmonths is now gone for good.

GEMINI: (May 22 - June 21)A friend of yours has a serious problem and is relying on

your help to come up with a solution, so think fast. The weekwill go by pretty smoothly for it will have plenty of variety. At least you won’t have to worry about getting bored.

CANCER: (June 22 - July 23)It’s time to take a serious look at the romance in your

life—and ask yourself if your expectations are realistic. Trynot to take life to seriously and have fun with those you love. You tend to accomplish a lot and everyone around willcatch your enthusiasm.

LEO: (July 24- August 23)This week brings a welcome relief from recent pressures,

so spend time with those you love. Your strong ego may getyou in hot water with a mate, and those old feelings ofwhether you’ve made the right choice or not are going tosurface again. Your plans for the future are very realistic.

VIRGO: (August 24 - September 23)If you feel that your friends have been difficult to deal

with lately, perhaps you should take a good look at yourself.Listen to what a loved one has to say about your personallife, there is more merit there than you are willing to admit.Start improving things on the job.

LIBRA: (September 24 - October 23)People close to you are charming and agreeable, but not

very good about keeping promises, so be realistic at alltimes. Share some of your more creative ideas with someonewho can take them one step further, in a practical way. Keepan eye on the food your eating.

SCORPIO: (October 24 - November 22)All you want this week is peace and quiet, but it seems

like everyone needs to speak or be with you. Find time tosneak off on your own. Your feelings for a lover are intense,so try and remain as realistic as possible. Concentrate onorganizing family matters that need your attention.

SAGITTARIUS: (November 23 - December 21)The focus is on your private life for the next month or so.

This time you may find it easier to sort out old misunder-standings. Don’t take any risks with your money right now.You may regret it. You can accomplish a lot if you moveahead with confidence and grace.

CAPRICORN: (December 22 - January 20)Finish up with routine projects at work or at home as

opposed to starting new ones. You will do best with what’sfamiliar right now. You tend to worry about money, so justbe extra careful about how and where you spend. With yourdelightful charm you may get just what you need.

AQUARIUS: (January 21 - February 19)Even though you try your best to please everyone, you

won’t be very successful. Maybe you should try to pleaseyourself. You are going to be more thoughtful and intro-spective than usual. Let your thoughts move to spiritualmatters. You have a strong need to help and serve humanity.

PISCES: (February 20 - March 20)The people you care about are very receptive to your

ideas right now. That’s the kind of support you really need. When it comes to your homelife, things have been going inten different directions; it’s time to get organized. Get outand mix with new friends.

IF THIS WEEK IS YOUR BIRTHDAY: Now’s time toreview projects and former decisions. Re-structuring willbe important at this time. It’s also ripe for wise investmentsand business dealings. Some of your most cherished beliefsabout security may be tested in the coming year.

Moving south to Toledo,

we find no taquerías (¡Quelastima!), but we do find aproliferation of Mexicanowned and operated restau-rants since January of 2002when El Camino Realopened its second locationin Toledo at Douglas andSylvania Streets—then ElReparo, which had a loca-tion in the Southwyck area, opened its Sylvania restau-rant.

We also have El Salto inMaumee, Arnoldo’s inNorthwood, and LaPirámide del Sol in my neckof the woods, south Toledo.

In the past two months ElRodeo (on Monroe Street, west Toledo), Mi Hacienda(on Glanzman, south To-ledo), and El Vaquero (onSecor Street, west Toledo)opened—all boast excellentMexican cuisine. Mind

you, there is no cooking likemy mother’s comidamexicana, but I have en-joyed eating at all of thesevenues. I also like the factthat they are spread out, indifferent parts of T-town, sothat I can get a bite wher-ever I am at.

But let us not forget thatthis all started in 1968 withSeñor Villa and El Tipico insouth Toledo. I should alsomention that I have not yethad the opportunity to dineat El Coyote in north To-ledo and will keep La Razaposted.

Toledo is well blessedwith comida mexicana, butwe need taquerías tambiéncomo El Nacimiento, MiTierra, San Ignacio, Los Al-tos, y Lupitas en Detroit.

¡Viva México! ¡Viva lacomida mexicana!

The Legend of the VaqueroLong ago Mexican Vaqueros perfected the art of roping, branding

cattle, and cooking on the range. The rugged Vaqueros knew how to livelife to the fullest. Unique seasonings and the richest recipes created abrand of cooking all their own.

Inspired by their legendary skills around a campfire, the style of“on the ranch” cooking uses distinctive spices and mesquie grilling tocreate these Vaquero favorites for our guests today. On the ranch we dothings a little differently.
