Its aim isto explore, assess and implement strategies toimprove management of the provincial landcorridor and nearby private lands. Wherepossible, restoration can also be done. All ofthis is meant to maintain or improve waterquality in Ridge Reservoir and the con-veyances and storage facilities connected toit.

City of Calgary (Larger MunicipalitiesAward)

The Town of Bruderheim is honoured tohave received the 2019 Ministers’ Award forMunicipal Excellence for the BruderheimInfinity Business Centre (BIBC) BusinessIncubator and Women Rising programs. Theaward was presented at the Alberta UrbanMunicipalities Association (AUMA) Conven-tion in Edmonton on Wednesday, September25th.

“This award speaks volumes about ourbusiness community in Bruderheim,” saysBruderheim Mayor, Karl Hauch. “Bruderheimis committed to improving quality of life, pro-viding new opportunities for our existingbusinesses, and to attracting new commercialand industrial business to serve the Town andour surrounding rural and industrial neigh-bours. The Business Incubator and WomenRising programs provide a significant benefitfor our community and region—we areextremely grateful to the Provincial Govern-ment for partnering with us to make theseprograms a reality.”

The Business Incubator program providesbusiness startups in the region with the keyelements they need to succeed, such as officeand meeting space, admin support, and accessto learning opportunities and training. Targetsfor the incubator program are local entrepre-neurs and retailers, as well as prospectivebusinesses that have no physical space towork from. The Incubator is currently full andin high gear, supporting a handful of localbusinesses.

“Women Rising is a dynamic workshopprogram where rural businesswomen havebeen encouraged to reach higher,” states Rox-anne Carr, economic development profession-al and former mayor of Strathcona County. Back-to-school season andcooler weather brings manyAlbertans back indoors and withmore communal activity, there isalso often an increase in thespread of common viruses andinfections. Cleaning our hands(also known as hand hygiene) isone of the best ways we can pre-vent germs from spreading. Themain way germs spread isthrough our hands. We can pickup germs almost everywhere, including telephones, doorknobs, and stair railings. We can spreadthese germs without even realiz-ing it. Our hands may look clean, but we can’t see the germs thatcause infections. When we forgetto clean our hands, or don’t cleanthem properly, we can spreadgerms to other people. We canalso spread them to ourselves bytouching our eyes, mouth, nose,or cuts on our bodies. We can alldo our part to prevent germs fromspreading and causing infectionsby taking a few simple steps tokeep our hands clean. When Do We Need to CleanOur Hands?• Before preparing and eating

food. • Before touching our eyes, nose,

or mouth. • After using the bathroom, blow-

ing our nose, or coughing orsneezing on our hands.

How Do We Clean Our Hands:• Hand Sanitizer or Soap and

Water? You can use hand sani-tizers (alcohol-based hand rub)or soap and water to clean yourhands. Hand sanitizers are bestto use when your hands don’t

look or feel dirty but should becleaned.

To clean your hands with handsanitizer: 1. make sure your hands are dry2. put enough hand sanitizer on

your hand to cover your palm3. rub it all over your hands (e.g.,

on your wrists, palms, backs ofyour hands, and between yourfingers)

4. keep rubbing until all the handsanitizer dries (about 15 sec-onds) Soap and water is best touse when your hands look orfeel dirty, before eating orpreparing food and after usingthe bathroom.

To clean your hands with soapand water: 1. Wet your hands with running

water and apply soap. 2. Rub your hands together to

make a lather. Scrub well for atleast 20 seconds.

3. Pay special attention to yourwrists, the backs of yourhands, between your fingersand under your fingernails.

4. Rinse your hands well underrunning water.

5. Use a clean towel to dry yourhands, or air-dry your hands.

In addition to keeping up yourhand hygiene, be sure to armyourself against influenza, bygetting immunized. Alberta'sInfluenza Immunization Programbegins Oct. 24th - plan aheadnow to get your immunization asearly in the season as possible.www.ahs.ca/influenza

Minister of Justice Doug Schweitzer

has expanded his ‘talking rural crime’

tour to include more townhalls and an

online survey.

The minister, who has been travel-

ling around the province since Sept. 5

to hear people’s concerns about rural

crime, continues to meet with resi-

dents, business owners, rural crime

watch groups and officials.

To meet popular demand, Minister

Schweitzer has extended his ‘talking

rural crime’ tour for another month.

Albertans can also provide their feed-

back in an online survey.

“I am thankful for everyone who has

participated in our townhalls and meet-

ings. Your input is essential in helping

our government create safer and more

secure communities. While we are

adding more opportunities across the

province, we understand it will not be

possible for everyone to participate in

person. I encourage those who are

unable to attend to complete the survey

so your voice is heard.”

and Solicitor General
