Recycling infrastructure
all countries have e-waste Recycling companies
There are big differences in their state-of-the-art technology (plants, internal organization, certification, etc.)
There are differences in the service level (recycling, reconditioning, reuse, transport)
Increasing but still rather small collection volumes
Big challenge: modernization and mechanization and adaptation to the EPR systems
First mechanized plant?

Objectives Provide a credible and practical global framework to generate changes towards more
sustainable metal recycling and recovery practices. Propose mechanisms of assurance and traceability for those economic operators who
wish to demonstrate compliance and improvements made in relation to the Principles and Objectives.

Role of StEP
• StEP puts a strong focus on facilitating communication between the members to share experience and knowledge
• Within StEP representatives from different stakeholder groups work together to discuss global issues from different angles
• StEP is forward looking and contributes to the global e-waste discussion
• StEP coordinates regional activities to avoid duplication of work and facilitate cooperation
www.step-initiative.org
Activities of StEP in LAC
• March 2018: Working Group WEEE-LAC created (RLG, UNIDO, Philips, RELAC, US-EPA, UNU, Empa…)
• April 2018: 1st virtual meeting of the StEP working group WEEE-LAC; TORs;• Share information about ongoing projects and activities in the region implemented by
Step members• Provide an overview of ongoing activities and developments in the region• Facilitate communication between Step members interested in the region• Make Step publications accessible for regional actors, eg through webinars or
translation of documents• Provide regular updates to all Step members about developments in the region
• April to October 2018: • 3 webinars for LAC• 3 virtual working group meetings
• March 2019: 1st EWAM in Latin-America (Costa Rica) and 2 more EWAM and 1 EWAS to follow until 2021
