What’s the problem?
• Diagnosing E2E problems is often:• ad hoc• time consuming• “unfair” / not uniform
• Example
3
E2Epi Network Performance Workshop
• Announcement: Internet2 has begun a new series of workshops
• Focus: Performance Tools• BWCTL, OWAMP, NDT• Installation• Use• Integration into IT support process
• Approach• Hands on• Interactive
4
Performance Tool Beacons
• BWCTL / Iperf• Throughput tool with resource allocation
broker• Iperf is a tool developed by NLANR/DAST
• OWAMP• One-way latency tool (one-way ping)
• NDT• First-mile diagnosis of commonly
encountered problems
5
Workshop Deliverables
• Working installation of BWCTL, NDT, and OWAMP at GigaPoP
• Working installation of BWCTL, NDT, and OWAMP at each campus
• Exchange of “keys” among campuses and GigaPoP
• Community of Collaborative approach to performance diagnosis
6
Workshop Host / Audience
• Each workshop has a host, expected to be a campus / GigaPoP
• Audience is network engineers from a GigaPoP and associated campuses
• Host must identify audience, make invitations, provide networking
7
Workshop History
• Developed/taught by Internet2 PAT Team (Spring ’05)
• SOX, hosted by GaTech (March ’05)• http://e2epi.internet2.edu/network-perf-wk/gatech/
agenda.html• CENIC, hosted by UCLA (June ’05)• Joint Techs – Vancouver (July ’05)• Orthogonal to focus on GigaPoPs• Good opportunity to “kick the tires”
• After that, TBD …

What’s Next?
• The focus of this workshop is on building standalone tool “beacons” for prepositioned on-demand testing.
• We are currently developing (in conjunction with GÉANT2 JRA1) a measurement framework for:• Regularly Scheduled Tests• Measurement Point Discovery
• Alpha participants in measurement framework will be drawn from “deployment footprint”
