are divorced and remarried without an annulment to receive the Holy Communion, then we may be in the danger of changing the teaching of Christ who said, that those who divorce and remarry are committing adultery. Certainly today there are many fine people who find themselves in this situation and who are other-wise practicing Catholics. Pope Francis said these people are welcomed to their Church, are not excommunicated, and can participate a fully as possible in the life of the Church, but still are barred from receiving Communion and the other Sacraments until the irregular situation is regularized either through an an-nulment or death of the other spouse. Some of the bishops are discussing other possibilities. In the Orthodox Churches for ex-ample, the innocent party of a divorced couple can remarry and receive Sacraments - under the legal provision of epikeia or the breaking of a law for the greater good; that is the spiritual wel-fare of the person. Others have asked to allow individuals to decide for themselves as a matter of conscience, though in this case one's conscience needs to be fully formed in faith. So as the bishops in the Synod continue to discuss and present to the Pope their conclusions on pastoral ministry to the family, we must pray for them, that they be open to the Holy Spirit and not blind to the truth. Pax Christi, Fr. Paul

Dear Brothers and Sisters: In our catechesis on the family, we spoke last week about the promises we make to our children by bringing them into the world. Today we consider the promise of love and fidelity made between husbands and wives, which is the basis of all family life. This promise is called into question nowadays, and seen as somehow opposed to personal freedom. Yet the truth is that our freedom is shaped and sustained by our fidelity to the choices and commitments we make throughout life. Fidelity grows through our daily efforts to keep our word; indeed, fidelity to our promises is a supreme expression of our dignity as human beings. There is no greater “school” to teach us such fidelity than marriage and the family, which are, in God’s plan, a bless-ing for our world. Saint Paul tells us that the love which grounds the family points to the bond of love between Christ and the Church. In these days of the Synod on the Family, let us pray that the Church will uphold and strengthen the promise of the family, with creativity and with unfailing trust in that faith-ful love by which the Lord fulfils his every promise.

—Pope Francis, October 21, 2015, General Audience

Jesus said to him in reply, "What do you want me to do for you?" The blind man said, "Master, I want to see." Jesus told him, "Go your way; your faith has saved you." "Master, I want to see." These are the faith-filled words of a blind man seeking out Jesus. These words should be on our lips also. We are blind, we are blind to the truth, to jus-tice and to mercy. How often we face our trials, our experienc-es, our encounters and even our religion with the blinders of prejudice, bias, established opinions, and social mores. These past two weeks the Bishops have been in Rome at the Synod on the Family. They have been discussing the importance of family life, marriage, sexuality, and who can receive communion, re divorced and remarried and active ho-mosexuals. In the Wall Street Journal I read Thursday morning an article about the Synod and how the Bishops are "disagreeing" with the Pope's agenda for the Synod. I have to contest that statement since the Pope does not have any other agenda for the Synod other than to make a pastoral plan for the Church clergy and ministers to implement. The author of the article sets up the Synod as some sort of political convention. He labels bishops as conservatives (against the Pope's so-called agenda) and the liberals (those promoting the Pope's "openness") who would have those in an irregular marriage receive the Sacraments even though Christ's teachings on mar-riage and divorce are quite clear. It seems that our well inten-tioned reporters and many of us are blinded by the political categories of liberal and conservative and contemporary secular amorality and apply them to the inner workings of the Church. We all need to beg Jesus to see. We need to remind ourselves that the Holy Spirit guides the Church in her inner most being which is why we understand the Church to be both the Bride of Christ and his Mystical Body. The bishops know well that we cannot depart from the teachings of the Church, but only can apply them to each generation. For example the teaching of extra ecclesia nulla salus (outside the Church there's no salva-tion) centuries ago simply implied if you are not a member of the Catholic Church you cannot be saved, but today we under-stand the same teaching to mean that all are saved through the grace of the Church, since the Church is the Body of Christ and all will be judge by Him. So it is by the graces bestowed upon the Church, that men and women are saved. In Eucharistic Prayer IV we pray for " all those who seek [God] with a sin-cere heart." So while our understanding and presentation of the teachings may change, the teaching itself does not. So if the Church were to make a blanket statement allowing those who
