one player from each team at the end of the game.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FROM THE GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT:

Seniors are reminded to complete their college applications and to update their Naviance accounts to indicate where they need transcripts sent.

Remember, transcripts cannot be sent to colleges unless you have a signed transcript release form on file AND you request the transcript via Naviance.

Seniors who have been active in school and community service should consider applying for the Hoffman‐DiMuzio Gifts of the Heart scholarship. Information is available on Naviance. Interested students must submit info by 11/22 to their guidance counselor.

Seniors should check in Naviance for information on how to apply for a variety of local and regional scholarship opportunities.

The deadline to apply to Rutgers is coming up on December 1st. Be sure to complete your application as well as the SRAR (Self‐Reported Academic Record) by this deadline.

Seniors who plan to apply to RCGC: The on‐line application is available at www.rcgc.edu/apply. Once the application is complete, remember to stop down to guidance to pick up your free RCGC gift!

Juniors and seniors: There is still time to register for the December 5th SATs, though a late registration fee applies. The Late Registration deadline for the December SAT is November 22nd. You can register at www.collegeboard.com.

NEWS FROM OUR SCIENCE DEPARTMENT: The WDHS 2nd year Engineering Students, Dr. Gismondi and Mr. Pustie were invited by Mrs. Kruithof, a WD parent and Lockheed Martin Vice President, to attend Manufacturing Day at the Moorestown facility on October 27th. We learned about how crucial U.S. based manufacturing is for the success of such programs like the Aegis System – the world’s most advanced maritime ballistic missile defense system. We worked through an activity that taught us how more efficient an assembly line is for building Lego block ships than for each worker building the entire ship. Lockheed Martin emphasized that a career in manufacturing is often overlooked by STEM majors and that some very lucrative entry‐level manufacturing jobs only require a STEM related associates degree. We took an extensive tour of the Aegis manufacturing facility where we saw how the phased array radar elements are built from scratch and then assembled into the final radar system. Some of the processes are controlled by multi‐million dollar robots. Also, testing the system in parts and as a whole is a crucial part of the manufacturing process. The engineers that we meet were very excited about their work since the manufacturing challenges make it interesting on a daily basis. They also talked about advancing to other manufacturing jobs if they wanted to try something new. Our students had the opportunity to network with a variety of engineers in a ten minute speed “dating” Q & A session. Some students expressed an interest in seeking out an internship at Lockheed Martin as a college student.

The Exxon Mobil Technical Center in Paulsboro hosted a full day STEM program for ten female sophomore students interested in engineering on Tuesday, October 18. Students participated in three activities: robotics, the chemistry of bath fizzies, and a tour of the Lubricant Testing Laboratory. They had an opportunity to network with female engineers in a Q&A session. All who participated enjoyed the day thoroughly! Attached is a photo of our students standing next to a Formula 1 test car. ANNUAL POWDER PUFF GAME: The annual Powderpuff football game between the junior and senior girls will be held Wednesday, November 30th at 7 pm in the stadium. Admission is five dollars or three dollars with a non‐perishable food donation. OPERATION BLESSING: Operation Blessing Operation Blessing will be helping out close to 20 of our high school students and their families this December. You will notice that there is a Christmas tree in our building lobby that has paper ornaments on it that indicate special items that these students are hoping to receive. If you are able to contribute by purchasing one of these gifts, it would be most appreciated. The front of each paper ornament contains a “wish list item” and the back has information on returning the gift item to Guidance by December 5th. Please contact the Guidance Office with any questions.

KEY CLUB NEWS:

The Operation Blessing Food Drive has begun! Please help the WDHS Key Club continue their annual tradition of providing holiday food baskets to over 100 local families. Most needed items are peanut butter, jelly, stuffing, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, canned vegetables, fruit, soup and stews, pasta, rice, dessert mixes, and pasta sauces. You can drop off your donations in the Main Lobby at WDHS now through December 8th. Key Club members will be conducting neighborhood food drives in support of Operation Blessing. If you get a flier in your mailbox saying that a student is collecting food, please consider putting together a donation for them. If you have any questions, contact Mrs. Yeager, Key Club Advisor. Thank you for your generosity. Volunteer Opportunity: Volunteers are needed every Saturday from 9‐11 AM at Colonial Manor food pantry located at 56 Elberne Street. If you or your student are interested in volunteering, contact Mrs. Yeager. RENAISSANCE CLUB NEWS: The Renaissance Club will be selling Chick‐Fil‐a sandwiches after school EVERY Wednesday! Sandwiches are $4! All proceeds go to the Renaissance Club whose goal is to build school leadership through academic achievement and school spirit. SAVE THE DATE! The Renaissance Club is hosting their first Car and Truck Show! It will be held on Saturday, May 20, 2017. If you are interested in showing a car or truck, or if you are interested in being a vendor at our Car and Truck Show please fill out one of the attached forms and send them in to the attention of either Mrs. Falcone or Mrs. Pence. All spots (car/truck as well as vendors) are $15. The Renaissance Club appreciates your ongoing support! We hope to see everyone there!

High School Graduation Assessment Requirements

Updated October 2016

On August 3, 2016, the State Board of Education approved updated state regulations for the high school graduation assessments requirements in both English language arts (ELA) and mathematics for the Classes of 2016 through 2021, and beyond. Students graduating as members of the classes of 2016 through 2019 can meet graduation assessment requirements through a variety of ways, including:

(1) Achieving passing scores on certain PARCC assessments; (2) Achieving certain scores on alternative assessments such as the SAT, ACT, or Accuplacer; or (3) The submission by the district of a student portfolio through the Department’s portfolio appeals process. (Special Education students whose Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) specify an alternative way to demonstrate proficiencies will continue to follow the graduation requirements set forth in their IEPs.)

The Class of 2020 can demonstrate graduation assessment proficiency through the same alternative means as those in the Classes of 2016 through 2019, provided that students in the Class of 2020 take all PARCC assessments associated with the high-school level courses for which they were eligible*, as of the effective date of when the amendments were adopted by the State Board of Education. For the Class of 2021 and thereafter, students who have not demonstrated proficiency on the ELA 10 and Algebra 1 assessments, and have taken all PARCC assessments associated with the high-school level courses for which they were eligible*, can demonstrate graduation assessment proficiency by meeting the criteria of the portfolio appeals process. It is important to note there has always been a system for students to demonstrate and meet graduation requirements through an alternative assessment or pathway to graduation throughout New Jersey’s forty-year history with a statewide assessment program. In this document, you will find charts containing the list of assessment requirements in both ELA and mathematics for the high school graduation Classes of 2016 through 2021. * “Eligible” is defined as a student who is enrolled in a high-school level course for which there is a PARCC test. This includes all of these courses: Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, ELA 9, ELA 10, and ELA 11.

2. THE ANNUAL UNDERWEAR COMPETITION HAS BEGUN! Donations of new packages of underwear for any age and gender will be accepted through Monday, December 5th. The donations will be distributed at Operation Blessing. The class which brings in the most underwear will be presented with the prestigious Underwear Trophy at the winter pep rally – let’s see if the Class of 2018 gets to retain their title, or another class will take it from them!
