Eagle Pride Awards
By Tammy Gaines
K-6 Counselor
This quarter in counseling class K-2, the focus has been on developing study skills in the classroom. We discussed and
completed activities on being a good student - worked on listening skills, working quietly, and just being a responsible
student. We also spent some time on how to get along with others as well as how to treat other people. In grades 3-6
the focus was on empathy. We discussed the meaning of empathy, knowing your own feelings, learning to read other's
feelings, empathy through listening, and making and keeping friends. The following students earned the award for 3rd
quarter: Thomas Kinney, Lexi Thomas, Emma Dennis, Koby Pobst, Linden Holmes, Brody Meystedt, Rylan Romas,
Camdyn Nenniger, Annah McGuire-Jenkins, Paden Anderson, Lilly Knotts, Marshall Bradley, Kolten Payne, and Em-
ma Priggel. These children are beautiful examples of wearing a smile on their face, sharing kind words, helping others,
and going the extra mile to make someone's day just a little brighter. We are very proud of these students for showing
good character and encourage all students to consistently work toward showing Eagle Pride daily at Oran Elementary.
We have focused on Empathy this quarter:
what is it
knowing your own feelings
learning to read other's feelings
empathy through listening
empathy and making and keeping friends
We also worked on:
coping strategies for Teases and Put-Down's
completed lesson on Bully Awareness

Recently the Oran Girls and Boys basketball teams were able to accomplish a
historical feat by earning a trip to the final four in the same season. If you were not able to
make the games, be it known that our student athletes were the epitome of 1st class in all
their actions. Our kids and coaches were respectful, well behaved, appreciative and they
even had some fun doing it. While all these qualities make us proud to be an Oran Eagle, it
would be a huge understatement if we did not recognize ALL those in the community/
school that equally contribute to our great school. Community support, hard work, pride,
and treating each other like family is a staple in making Oran Schools the best in the
state. While a Thank You for the TREMENDOUS amount of support during our final four
run this year is in order. THANK YOU. An even bigger THANK YOU is in order for your
unwavering support through the test of time. It is no accident Oran R-III schools remains
top notch due to your commitment for the schools betterment. On behalf of Oran Schools
we sincerely appreciate it all.
Oran Eagle Pride
Elementary By: Travis Spane
We have finished a great 3rd quarter and got through with only one snow day so far this year! We
did miss two more with our Boys and Girls basketball teams going to the final four. The elementary
would like to congratulate the girls on their 4th place finish and the boys winning first place.
Students and teachers have been working really hard during the third quarter. I would like to thank
everyone that helped with the Computers for Education fundraiser that the elementary had in
January, it was big success. PTO sponsored Donuts for Dad, I was amazed how many dads were
here, I would like to thank everyone one who attended and who helped make it a great morning.
PTO will be sponsoring Muffins for Moms in May. Notes will be sent home with more details. The
AR pork steak dinner went great and I would like to thank Tanya Albritton, Jeannie Knotts, Robin
Spane and their kids for working and doing a great job.
Upcoming events for the elementary. PTO is hosting a change war to benefit our local food bank.
The winning classes in K-2 and 3-6 get to throw a pie in my face along with Coach Shoemaker,
Mrs. Gaines, Mrs. Gelsheimer, Mrs. Pobst, Mrs. White and Mrs. Dennis as a reward. Keep students
reading as students who make their goal 3 quarters will be on the AR reward trips in early May. We
will be MAP testing at the end of April. During these dates please make sure your son or daughter
gets a good meal for supper, plenty of sleep each night and a good breakfast to get students up and
going. Our last day of school is May 18th. This year for Play Day PTO is looking at taking the
elementary to Perry Parks Center in Perryville Mo. to watch a movie. We look forward to a great
4th quarter.

First Grade Mrs. Gelsheimer
We are reading nonstop to make
our Accelerated Reading goals. We
are currently working on telling
time, graphing, and measuring in
math. In reading we are continuing
to work on long vowel sounds. We
are currently practicing retelling the
story. Our class won free
McFlurries for collecting the most
money for the Ronald McDonald
Houses. Several from our class
received sodas for collecting Box
Tops and meeting the individual
goal. We enjoyed watching the
chicks hatch from the eggs. Our
Valentine’s Party was a huge
success. We have been learning
about Dr. Martin Luther King,
George Washington, Abraham
Lincoln, and Benjamin Franklin.
We are eagerly awaiting the arrival
of spring!!!
Second Grade Mrs. Pobst
2nd Grade has been
extremely busy. In reading we
have been focusing on important
skills such as compare and contrast,
cause and effect, making and
confirming predictions, inferences,
and author’s purpose. These skills
are a continuation from 1st grade,
but this year we have added a new
element. In 2nd grade we have to
use details to support our
responses. For example, if we say
that a passage is persuasive, we
have to give a detail to support that
it is persuading.
In math we have been
focusing on graphs and money. We
have taken surveys at home and
school and used the data to make
graphs and analyze the data. We all
know how important money is, so
we have spent several weeks
learning to count coins. Not only
have we learned to count coins, but
we have learned to add and subtract
amounts. We have also focused on
money word problems that involve
figuring change.
In social studies we have
been learning about government.
We have learned interesting facts
about city, state, and country
governments. We have also
learned about the 7 continents and 4
oceans in our world.
We have worked really
hard this quarter and are going to
continue to work hard in the 4th
quarter to learn all the material that
we need to be ready for 3rd grade.
We are excited about 4th quarter,
but I have to admit we are just as
excited that spring will be here
soon!
Third Grade Mrs. White
The third quarter
certainly seemed to pass quickly
this year! After returning from our
Christmas break, the third graders
got down to business in the
classroom. In Math we focused on
fractions as well as continuing to
work on mastery of multiplication
and division facts. Our mastery
goal is to be able to complete 100
basic facts during a 5 minute timed
test, and students must do this 3
times before earning the title of
“Multiplication Master.” At this
point, 16 of 19 students have
mastered multiplication. The class
has been promised a pizza party if
we have 100% of our class master
multiplication! Eight of our
students have mastered division,
and 5 of them are “Mixed Masters,”
which means they have
successfully mastered timed tests
with a mix of multiplication and
division problems. We will
continue these daily timed tests as
well as practice online until the end
of the year with the hope that all
students will be ready for the much
larger 4th grade math problems next
year!
In Reading our focus was
on comparing/contrasting texts,
inferences, text structure, features
of informational text, as well as
comprehension and vocabulary.
The students also worked to
achieve their Accelerated Reading
Goals. Every morning as the
students come in to class we log
what they read at home the night
before. I am very impressed that the
majority of the class would rather
read a chapter book than a smaller
book this year.
In February you might
have noticed that some of our
students made the local news! The
third and fourth graders were
invited to participate in a cultural
presentation hosted by CENET.
Numerous presenters from
countries such as Australia, Brazil,
Japan and Costa Rica shared
information about their country and
culture with the children. It was a
fun-filled morning with students
moving through stations to learn
about other parts of the world. I
think their favorite part was tasting
food from other countries!
Representatives from local
government offices came to watch
the Culture in the Classroom
program in action, and both KFVS
as well as the Southeast Missourian
reported on this event. It certainly
was an exciting event for our class!
The PTO sponsored a
special event called “Donuts with
Dad” again this year. The
elementary students invited a dad,
grandpa, or other male role model
to school to spend a few minutes
together and eat donuts. Most of
our students had a special visitor
that day, and I thank all of the men
who took time out of their day to
stop by. The kids truly enjoyed
having you at school. Thanks to
our PTO for supplying donuts to all
of the elementary students whether
they had a visitor or not!

Fourth Grade Mrs. Dennis
It is hard to believe that third quarter has
come and gone already! We have been
working so hard and learning so many new
skills.
In Reading, we have been working hard on
many different skills. We have been focusing
on compare/contrast, author’s purpose, making
inferences, summarizing, and problem/
solution. These are skills that we have been
working on all year and will continue to
develop throughout 4th Quarter. We have also
been focusing on writing answers to questions
and the importance of writing the question in
the answer. This quarter we have read a play
and the students have really enjoyed reading it.
They got the chance to act out their parts and I
have to say we might have a few Hollywood
stars among us!
Math has been focused on learning all about
fractions and decimals. The students are
learning that fractions and decimals represent
part of a whole. We have conquered adding
and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers
with like denominators, learned how to create
equivalent fractions, compare fractions and
decimals, and locate them on a number line.
The students really enjoyed the activities with
manipulatives this quarter!
Science and Social Studies have also been very
interesting this quarter. In Science, we learned
about the water cycle and sound waves.
Students now know that the water cycle is
taking place constantly around them. Just look
at a cold drink cup on a warm day! In social
studies, we learned about the colonies and how
they were set up by the colonists. We learned
that many of the colonists were not happy with
the British rules, so they rebelled. Many of
the students were glad to find out that Boston
Harbor didn’t turn into a bay of tea after the
Boston Tea Party!
We are gearing up for the fourth quarter and
are looking forward to showing everyone how
much we have learned throughout the year.
We are working hard every day and are
anticipating much success on the end of the
year test!
Fifth Grade Mrs. Conn
We are just a few short weeks away from
taking the MAP test. We’ve had a very busy
3rd quarter. The students have spent time
multiplying, adding, and subtracting fractions
in math. We’ve worked on customary
conversion and volume. In social studies, we
just finished talking about the Louisiana
Purchase. The students particularly enjoyed
this chapter as we learned about the expansion
of the United States. In science, we’re
discussing simple machine. Later in the year,
the students will have an opportunity to create
Rube Goldbergs. We’re going to begin
reviewing concepts in reading, science, and
math to prepare for the MAP test.
Sixth Grade Mrs. Hanlon
Just as our weather continues to change daily
during this time of year, the students are
learning, changing, and growing each day. I
am extremely proud of the students and their
work ethic. Time management is a very
important skill, and the students are learning to
prioritize and manage INDEPENDENTLY!
In our math learning stations,
students are continuing to review and practice
previously taught skills through computer
games and manipulative games. We are also
focusing on ACCURACY in computation.
During the remainder of the quarter, we will be
studying measurement and begin reviewing for
testing at the end of the year. Students will
need continuous practice in these fundamental
skills as they relate to “real” life situations.
During the 3rd quarter, we studied light and
sound energy in science and ventured into the
Civil War Era in social studies.
As the seasons change and outdoor
activities and sports begin, please be sure to
remind your child to continue to complete
homework, prepare for tests, and work toward
goals. With your continued help and support,
the remainder of the year will be as successful
as the beginning!

FCCLA By: Amy Wibbenmeyer Adviser
FCCLA sold Little Caesar's Pizza kits in February. We would like to thank everyone who supported us! This
money helped us raise funds to go to State Leadership Conference! FCCLA went to State Leadership Con-
ference at Tan-Tar-A resort at Lake of the Ozarks. We had 10 students competing in competitive events. All
of the students competing earned metals. We got three gold and one silver. We will be sending one group to
National FCCLA Leadership conference this summer in Nashville, TN.
Megan Henson was elected as FCCLA Regional Officer for the 2017-2018 school year.
Megan said, “I feel honored to represent our school on this level. I feel it is a huge accomplish-
ment to be able to network with other students from other schools and be a leader for our region.

Agricultural Education and FFA News By: Ken Eftink
Third quarter has been very busy for students in the Agricultural Education Department at Oran High School. The
quarter began with the plan for the Exploring Agriculture Junior High 7th grade boys meeting and planning for
activities they would like to do during the class. Normally, we view a You Tube video each week on some agri-
culture topic that is approved by me and write a report on this; however, this time, the students wanted to watch a
You Tube video on a chick hatching. I stated that we could do this in class if someone in class has an incubator.
Quentin Senciboy raised his hand and said his Dad has an incubator and we could probably use it. Later we locat-
ed fertile eggs from Mr. J. D. Cook who donated 3 dozen eggs for the chick hatch project and provided some vital
information that we would want to do while the eggs are incubating and hatching. The project began on January
25, 2017 by placing the eggs in the egg turners supplied with the incubator. Eggs were candled at Day 6 and all
eggs were candled on Day 12. Thirty of the thirty-six eggs had chicks in them at that time, so the 6 that did not
were removed and cracked open outside to see what was happening. There were no chicks or blood spots present
on those. On Day 20, February 14, 2017 we noticed a chip in one of the eggs and the chicks were chirping. On
Day 21 the chicks began hatching. After hatching the chicks were placed in a homemade chick brooder supplied
by Mr. Billy Senciboy, Quentin’s Dad. On Day 22 we began cracking open other eggs that when candled looked
as though they had died. Overall, 23 chicks were hatched from the 36 eggs that were supplied. Students recorded
the daily temperature and humidity readings for the incubator and assisted with moving the eggs as needed and
moving the chicks from the incubator to the brooder. Several other classes came through to view the Egg Hatch
project and all were pleased to see the results.
Klayton Gosche applied for a Proficiency Award in the area of Grain Production. This application has passed the
Area 15 selection process and has moved onto the State FFA selection process. Austin Eftink applied for the State
FFA Degree. This application has passed the Area 15 selection process and moved onto the State FFA selection
process. Later Austin learned that he will not receive the State FFA degree this year, but he can reapply next year
if he chooses. Blake Schlitt, a 2016 graduate, has applied for the American FFA Degree. The paper work is com-
pleted and it has been sent onto the State FFA selection process. If Blake is selected, he will be the first recipient
of the American FFA degree from the Oran FFA.
The Oran FFA celebrated National FFA Week with their annual FFA Appreciation Meal on Thursday, Feb. 23,
2017 and Tractor Day on Friday Feb. 24, 2017. Approximately 125 people dined on grilled hamburgers, home-
made potato fries, and cookies. Thank you to the First Commercial Bank and Alliance Bank for donating money
for the dinner and the Oran Jaycees for allowing the Oran FFA to borrow their tables and chairs. Austin Eftink,
Klayton Gosche, Bryce Dirnberger, William Kluesner, and Devon Prindle brought tractors to school for Tractor-
Day.
In the future the Oran FFA will select chapter officers for the 2017-18 school year, host their annual FFA banquet
on April 12, and participate in the State FFA Convention on April 20-21, 2017.

High School Cheerleaders By: Erika Hutchcraft
Oran High School Cheerleading has had a great 2016-17
season and it couldn’t have ended on a better note. I would like
to mention that I am proud of my seniors for doing an
outstanding job and setting great examples for the other girls:
Abby Essner (1st year), Megan Tenkhoff (2nd year), and Brenna
Hahn (4th year). I would also like to note that Brenna Hahn,
Megan Tenkhoff, and Sydney Kern were selected as part of OIT
All-Tournament Cheer Team.
I asked some of the girls to tell me their favorite part of the
season and it was unanimous in all of their responses: getting to
go to State with both of our basketball teams and cheer our boys
on to a win. Had both teams and coaches not worked so hard,
we would not have gotten to have that experience; we are so
proud of both teams and coaches and we absolutely loved all of
the support from the community and our pep club.
We would like to extend our many thanks to those that
helped by donating time and/or money in order to give all of us
the best experience possible at State! We look forward to go-
ing again and cheering on both of our teams next year.

What is happening in the Arts at Oran High School.
Very, very busy this time of year at Oran High School. The art department is getting artwork ready for the
Sikeston Depot’s 42nd Annual Art Show which opens April 14th, 2017 at 5-7:30. We are hoping to have several
nice pieces including artwork in fibers, ceramics, painting and drawings. We have a lot of talent this year in Ad-
vanced art as well as Art I. The freshman class has really impressed me this year with their art talent.
Prom preparations are underway as the dance quickly approaches on April 8th, 2017. This year’s winter wonder-
land theme will be a first and should be quite elegant. We have been painting trees and assembling the back-
ground for the annual event. The décor will have an icy chill with hints of silver, light blue and tons of mir-
rored vinyl, white gossamer, twinkle lights and glitter. This may be a welcomed theme because of our mild win-
ter this year.
Our school wide art and music event will be held on April 24th in the Oran High School auditorium at 6:00pm.
It is open to the public, families and students as we hope to highlight artwork from K-12 students. See you there!
