PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Brett Foster is a poet and a friend. His poem captured so perfectly for me the count down to King’s. The Board

announced my candidacy for the role in January amidst much fanfare and celebration. And the countdown began to July 1, the date I officially took office.

Four months into the role and I have immersed myself in learning the language, culture and people of King’s and her supporting constituency. Though I am a quarter Dutch by heritage (my grandmother was a Van Ieperen), I am learning to speak with a Reformed accent. I look forward to meeting many of you in the coming months.

I am excited by the potential and substance that I see at King’s. Our committed and quality faculty and staff members are dedicated to helping students thrive! The students I have met to date are a lively and engaging crew! I look forward to seeing you at Eagles games, King’s theatre and music productions, chapel and other community events.

As we start a new academic year I am both delighted and humbled to serve as your President. We have much to be thankful to God for as a university community. It is my prayer that we continue to live into our biblical vision of restoration of all things in Jesus Christ.

…You’re left with only days, bare and perforated, a liturgy of doors, perfect symbol. Don’t days, after all, amount to this, lined up, surreptitious? You open them and

examine them, you count them and you count them down.

FACULTY NEWS

Eagles Athletics welcomes alumnus TODD VAN DRIEL (BA, ‘12,) as Athletics and Recreation Coordinator. Van

Driel returns to King’s after four years as an Eagle student-athlete playing men’s soccer and volleyball.

“Todd is a dedicated, passionate athlete. He is committed to Eagles athletics and to each member of our teams,” says Director of Athletics Grace Scott. “He brings his naturally competitive spirit to work every day striving to make our athletics program the best.”

In his role as Athletics and Recreation Coordinator, Van Driel is responsible for overseeing the running of home games, liaising with the provincial and federal collegiate athletics governing bodies and assisting with the day-to-day activities of the Eagles.

When asked why he wanted to return to King’s, Van Driel says “I couldn’t imagine suddenly stopping my connection to King’s. During my time as a student-athlete, I saw the athletics program at King’s grow and I want to continue to serve.”

For Van Driel, playing sports was part of his life from a young age growing up in Smithers, B.C. His competitive nature was nurtured in his athletic, naturally competitive family. He played soccer, volleyball and basketball all through high school and came to King’s to continue playing sports.

During his time as an Eagle, he was a recognized athlete in soccer. Van Driel was named ACAC All-Conference for three consecutive years (10/11, 11/12, and 12/13) and King’s Athlete of the Year for the 2011/12.

“King’s is small by comparison but we have high calibre, quality athletes playing for our teams,” says Van Driel. “With the introduction of badminton, this next year is sure to be a landmark year for Eagles athletes.”

New Coordinator the Competitive Heart in Eagles Athletics

Former Eagle athletes DAVID VAN BERKEL (BA, ‘10) and DARYL VAN DRIEL (‘10) (Todd’s older brother), are putting their athletic skills and training to good use pursuing careers as firefighters. Becoming a firefighter in Edmonton is no small feat. Often it can take candidates up to five years to be accepted. Van Berkel leveraged his skills to be accepted in two years. Van Driel recently completed the physical try-outs and exceeded the standards in many of the categories. Wearing all the required firefighting equipment, recruits have to run on a treadmill (known as the VO2 max test) for at least 13 minutes and are stopped at 21 minutes. Van Driel stopped at 21 minutes 20 seconds. He is the first person to do so this year. He also completed all the shorter tests – like the dummy lift and hose pull – in half the time allotted. He is grateful to King’s for allowing him to use the workout centre to train. The facility is available for use by all King’s alum.

“Kings Athletics really emphasizes the importance of playing for God, which transfers to all aspects of life. It allows you to put everything into perspective and helps you through the challenges and struggles but also keeps you modest and humble in your achievements and success.” - David Van Berkel (BA, ’10)

Eagles Athletics welcomes three new coaches and one new program for the 2013/14 season,

badminton. Led by Coach NAEEM HAQUE and Assistant Coach GRACE BOX, King’s is the third institution in Alberta after Concordia and NAIT to offer badminton at the collegiate level. Athletes from the three intuitions will play each other for the chance to represent Alberta at the Canadian Collegiate Athletics Association’s Nationals.

Naeem Haque has been involved in coaching badminton for almost 30 years. In that time he has coached Jr. High, Sr. High and post-secondary athletes and a number of nationally recognized competitors while coaching at Concordia University College of Alberta. He was honored with the Badminton Alberta “Excellence in Coaching” award as well as receiving the ACAC and CCAA “Coach of the Year” awards in the 2003-2004 season. “We feel extremely privileged to have a head coach with the experience and leadership excellence of Naeem, and look forward to seeing how he will continue to build badminton in Alberta and contribute to the lives of our student-athletes at King’s,” says Athletics Director Grace Scott.

Grace Box is a very dynamic coach whose outgoing personality and internal drive inspire her athletes. She is a very positive person who strives to make the practice environment both challenging and fun. Grace’s experiences and accolades in collegiate badminton will serve to show athletes just what they can achieve through dedication and hard work. Grace’s Assistant Coach position is supported through the 2013-2014 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Female Apprentice Coach Program, which provides grants for professional development for young female coaches.

King’s alumnus (‘01) MATT OOSTERHUIS returns to King’s men’s soccer. Matt has been very active in the local soccer community for the last six years volunteering for both the Drillers and Victoria soccer club programs. One of the most important goals Matt has as head coach is to help elevate the soccer program to the level of excellence that has become the standard for King’s teams. He is 100 per cent committed to challenging and supporting student athletes in their quest to be the best that they can be.

With the summer season coming to a close, Albertans all over the province are recalling memories of a refreshing

swim, an exhilarating boat ride, a fight with a lively fish or a dazzling lakeside sunset. As Alberta’s lakes play an important role in recreation, and in some cases supply drinking water to neighbouring communities, understanding the health of a water system becomes valuable knowledge that helps manage the system and ensure its health for years to come.

A group of King’s Environmental Studies students, interested in increasing their understanding of lake and watershed management, have completed a research project in collaboration with the North Saskatchewan Watershed Alliance (NSWA). The project was designed to assist in the development of a lake management strategy for Lac. St Cyr, located north east of Edmonton. This lake supplies the Town of St. Paul, the County of St. Paul and the Town of Elk Point with drinking water, and is a much-loved lake for outdoor enthusiasts of all kinds.

In the fall of 2012, NSWA approached Dr. John Wood with the possibility of having senior students complete a portion of the research. Graduating students JACINDA JOHNSTON and ALYSSA WESSELSON, along with fourth-year student CHELSEA DYCK (a member of the Eagles women’s basketball team), welcomed the invitation to work on the project. The specific goal was to build a predictive water quality model of the lake. Through bi-weekly meetings with NSWA and Alberta Environment and Sustainable Development (AESRD) staff, the students were coached on how to use water sciences to understand the lake and how their classroom studies could be applied in a career.

Using “BATHTUB” – a computerized water quality model developed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers – the students researched the evolution of the lake’s water quality using historic and current data. Applying skills learned in a Limnology (the study of fresh water ecosystems) course, the students were able to develop a physical, chemical and biological picture of the lake.

“By understanding the history of the diversion and land use surrounding the lake, we were able to simulate the levels of phosphorus, nitrogen, chlorophyll, and dissolved oxygen, all elements that characterize water quality” says Johnston.

The group worked through the challenges of trying to simultaneously learn software systems and develop a useable model. Wesselson explains: “Understanding how the modeling system worked and inputting the data into BATHTUB was the most substantial part of the project. We had to rework the model several times to create a model for Lac St Cyr. The challenge represented by the model was the most rewarding part of this project.”

For all three group members, learning about the lake further nurtured their individual passion for water management. After graduation, Johnston took a position with a Calgary firm continuing to work on water testing and modelling. Wesselson completed a summer work program with the NSWA and recently began working for Alberta Environment as part of a water management team for the North Saskatchewan River. Dyck just finished another summer position with Stantec with the Aquatic department, working as a Jr. Fisheries Biologist (she had competed her first internship with Stantec in the Water Services department). She says, “The experience gained from working with the NSWA has strengthened my understanding of water quality which applies directly to the field work I have done this summer.”

“At King’s we expect Bachelor of Science students to complete a high-level final research project,” says Dean of Natural Science, Dr. Wood, the project’s faculty advisor. “This group excelled at the task, and completed a research project that supports a local organization’s research and offers valuable insight into a drinking water supply that directly affects many Albertans.”

ABOUT LAKE ST. CYRLac St. Cyr is supplemented by a water diversion from the North Saskatchewan River, which was built in 1978 to keep water levels optimal for lake users. These users include fishers, campers, lakeside property owners, and the municipalities that rely on the lake for their supply of drinking water. As the diversion is on the North Saskatchewan River downstream from the City of Edmonton, wastewater treatment practices in the Capital Region have a direct effect on both the river and lake water quality.

King’s Adds to Understanding of Alberta Lake STUDENTS PARTNER IN RESEARCH By Kealy Litun, Marketing Coordinator

“The scientific understanding of lakes

is an essential component in developing a lake management

strategy for Alberta. This student research project was an important step

in helping NSWA and AESRD better understand the history and functioning of Lac St Cyr, and in providing advice

for its long-term management.”

How do student-athletes stay connected to King’s with their busy practice, game and academic schedules? How

do they keep perspective on what’s important in life? How do they integrate faith and their sport? These questions and more inspired former Eagle athletes Will Gelderman (men’s volleyball) and Julie Heavenor (women’s basketball) to start the Sports Ministry Coordinator student leadership position to help athletes stay connected to the community and keep faith top-of-mind in their busy lives.

Started in the 2012/13 academic year, Heavenor and Gelderman, under the guidance of Campus Minister Tim Wood and with the support of Student Life, offer a weekly group meeting and a weekly prayer meeting to interested student-athletes looking to connect with fellow athletes.

“We wanted to give athletes a place to go to talk about God and sports, discuss the challenges they were facing and offer them a time in community with their fellow athletes,” says Gelderman. “We challenged the group to think about how they could integrate their faith and their life as an athlete.”

The program built a relationship with Athletes in Action, a sport ministry program in 60-plus countries around the world. In Canada it has a presence on over 20 campuses across the country. Athletes in Action offers targeted programing to student-athletes who often don’t have time to connect with student life on campus because of their busy schedules.

“Athletes in Action believes in the development of the whole athlete – physical, mental and spiritual,” says Athletes in Action representative Roxanne Koop. The organization came to Canada in the 70s through players on the Edmonton Eskimos football team and offers programming across the country for developing athletes, university/college athletes and professional athletes. King’s athletes, including Gelderman and Heavenor, participated in Athletes in Action’s regional retreat held for AIA chapters on campuses across the Prairies at Gull Lake, Alberta each spring.

As the King’s Sports Ministry Coordinator leadership positions move into their second year, they will be filled by KIM DE JAGER (women’s Soccer) and TYLER STRUYK (men’s soccer). De Jager, an active participant in the program’s first year, was immediately drawn to the idea of the group, got involved, and found it to be a great place to interact with students from different programs and graduating classes. She was approached by Gelderman to consider applying to lead the program with Struyk in the second year and gladly accepted the offer.

Looking forward to the next year, de Jager adds, “Together with Tyler, we’re looking forward to have a core group of Eagles meeting regularly, reaching out to more athletes, and building a community of athletes that serve each other and God.”

From July 20 to 23 I had the unique opportunity to attend The Hesselbein Student Leadership Summit in Pittsburgh,

Pennsylvania. This is an annual event put on by The Hesselbein Global Academy for Student Leadership and Civic Engagement that takes place at the University of Pittsburgh. The academy and the summit were founded upon the legacy of Frances Hesselbein, a highly committed, motived and determined servant leader focused on diversity and inclusion for leadership. Her motto says it all and perfectly describes her character, “To Serve is to Live.”

The summit gives student leaders from around the world the opportunity to interact and learn together alongside distinguished mentors. Students are provided with the resources and skills to excel as effective, ethical and innovative global leaders.

One aspect of the summit was getting to listen to presentations from our mentors; another aspect of the summit was our civic engagement projects. Prior to the summit, participants were placed into mentorship communities, based upon their interests, which consisted of five students and one mentor. My mentor was Tamara Woodbury, CEO of Girl Scouts-Arizona Cactus-Pine Council, Inc. Each mentorship community was tasked with assisting a community organization in some way. My mentorship community assisted the Southwestern Pennsylvania chapter of the American Red Cross in organizing and retaining their volunteers through further developing a program recently implemented, Volunteer Connection. The civic engagement project allowed us to put into action the skills and expertise we acquired throughout the rest of the summit.

Participating in The Hesselbein Student Leadership Summit reinforced my belief that leadership is a way of life, a process, a never-ending journey. Frances Hesselbein said something about leadership that I couldn’t agree more with: “Today you and I are fellow travellers on the journey to leadership. Leadership is not a destination but a journey.”

I am fortunate enough to say that my leadership journey has already begun at a young age and I anticipate where it has yet to bring me.

This was an experience I will never forget. I met 40 of the world’s most exemplary student leaders and young “world changers” along with 14 dedicated mentors. The Academy radically impacted my perspective on leadership. The Academy follows through on its vision “to produce a cadre of experienced, ethical leaders equipped to address critical issues throughout the world.”

I came out of the summit ready to take on more than ever before. There was an undeniable and extremely positive atmosphere of leadership that gave me a great deal of confidence and motivation in terms of continuing on the journey of leadership.

Going into my final year of studies at King’s it also means that this will be my last year serving on the Student Life team. I look forward to sharing what I learned during my time at The Hesselbein Global Academy for Student Leadership and Civic Engagement Student Leadership Summit.

What do volleyball and medicine have in common? Plenty, if you ask JORDYN VANDERVEEN (nee Brandsma)

(B.Sc., ‘10) and CHRISTA AUBREY (nee Preuss) (B.Sc., ‘08). Each alumna played on the Eagles volleyball team while completing degrees at King’s, and each has gone on to study medicine following her time at King’s.

VanderVeen is in her last year of the clinical portion of her degree at the University of Calgary. She plans to do general practice in rural communities, so is currently completing her clinical requirement in rural Alberta. She works primarily in Sundre, in emergency, hospital medicine, family clinic and low-risk obstetrics, but also visits Olds weekly and works there in anaesthesia, general surgery and surgical obstetrics.

VanderVeen reflects that her time spent on the women’s volleyball team at King’s prepared her for rigorous studies in med school. “Training and studying are born of the same process,” says VanderVeen. “Both demand hard work every day.” And while VanderVeen focuses on her final goals, she has also learned that “it is even more important to celebrate the small milestones.Ultimately, I am honoured to be able to do both athletics and medicine. God has graciously granted me a healthy body, a studious mind and the opportunities to pursue these things I enjoy. I owe all my success to Him.”

Aubrey, currently in her second year of residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Alberta, hopes to work in global health, and plans to pursue a Masters in Global Health, focusing on maternal health. Her interest in international medicine has grown out of her experiences in other countries, including her participation in the Honduras Water Project at King’s.

Like VanderVeen, Aubrey has found the workload in med school demanding but feels that her experience playing volleyball prepared her for the rigorous schedule. For Aubrey, both volleyball and obstetrics involve teamwork, produce an adrenaline rush, and demand mental toughness and hard work.

Aubrey also recalls developing her skills through her classes and involvement in clubs at King’s: “At King’s I was able to explore so many aspects of what I am interested in. Volleyball, classes, the Micah Action and Awareness Society, the King’s Science Society, research, worship team – these all prepared me in so many ways for my future, from time-management, to team-work, to critical thinking, problem solving, public speaking, interpersonal skills and communication.”

We are proud and pleased to watch our Eagles alumni putting their skills to work in medicine.

Regina is known for its love of the Roughriders, but in a city that bleeds green, King’s Alumnus GREG BARTHEL

(BA, ‘04) has his eyes set on excellence in a different sport – men’s volleyball.

This History graduate was a member of the King’s athletics program in the mid-1990s, as King’s prepared the program for joining the ACAC. When King’s entered the ACAC in 1997, Greg took an assistant coaching position with the team. After two years of assistant coaching, Greg was thrilled to take the reigns as the head coach of the King’s Eagles men’s volleyball program.

In his eight years as head coach, Greg led the team to many successes: 02-03 ACAC Bronze Medal, 04-05 ACAC Bronze Medal, two players selected as All-Canadians [Hans Doef (BA, ’04), Rob DeJong (BA, ’06)], as well as numerous top-15 national rankings. While coaching at King’s, Greg also finished his last classes towards his own BA, and took several volunteer coaching opportunities (Alberta Volleyball Association Men’s Volleyball coach, Northern Alberta

Volleyball Club’s Under-16). In 2005 Greg was honored as both the ACAC and CCAA Men’s Volleyball coach of the year.

Greg took the position with the University of Regina, a member of the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS), in 2007. The move to CIS has been thrilling for Greg: “I get to spend every day in the gym training volleyball players. This is my passion, and I love it.” Greg continues to cultivate a competitive team in the ultra-competitive Canada-West division of the CIS while setting his sights ever higher. In 2010 and 2011 he coached the Men’s Jr. National team. In 2011 his role with the team included a trip to the World Championships in Brazil.

Greg is grateful for the early coaching opportunity he received at his Alma Mater: “King’s is where I got my start. It was a really good experience. Some truly great athletes came through King’s. If it wasn’t for King’s and the opportunity I had there, I would never have gotten to where I am today.”

Congratulations on all your successes Greg. We wish you and the U of R Cougar’s volleyball program much success in 2013-14.

In July, Alumni Relations Manager Josh Noble sat down for 10 questions with JON HEINEN (B.Mus., ‘ 04). Jon is

currently living in Fort McMurray, working for Christian Labour Association of Canada (CLAC). Jon is a proud King’s Alumnus and all-time “kills” leader for men’s volleyball.

JN: Thanks for taking the time Jon – so what do you do at CLAC?JH: We represent workers who do everyday jobs working for an employer. Think grocery stores, nursing homes, construction. I work with employees, encourage their training, and otherwise represent them in their everyday working life.

JN: How did you come to King’s originally? JH: I took a year off after high school. I thought, “I’m never going to school. I’m going to be a framer.” Then I came out to a few volleyball practices with some friends… and everything fell into place. I liked the team, but didn’t like the lifestyle of framing. At this point I can’t give King’s enough credit for where I am today. Particularly I think of Dr. Segger and Dr. Dudiak. They were quality educators and mentors. After my five-year degree, I recruited for King’s… then went back and coached! I’m a huge supporter and fan of King’s.

JN: Tell me about your athletics career.JH: I came to King’s right after they had finished a very strong year. Unfortunately, most of the players had graduated and moved on. I remember Wayne Prins (BA, ‘ 03) and I walked the halls trying to find more players. We were all new, including our coach Greg Barthel (BA, ‘ 04). It was a big adventure. We recruited some fresh talent from Lacombe and Calgary and worked ourselves to a reputable place.

JN: After King’s you played as well?JH: I was still wanting more after King’s. At a beach tournament I met an agent who hooked me up with a professional team in Sweden. I played there in 2005-06. The experience level was very different; we had a 42-year-old middle and our best player was 32.

JN: Did you play more after Sweden? JH: I trained in Holland, Greece, and Cyprus and though I wanted to play in Holland, I decided to come back to Canada. The beauty of being an athlete in university is balance. As a professional there is no balance. I just worked out and played volleyball, but my life got thrown out of balance. In university, if you don’t have a good practice, you bear down on school work. If school is going bad, you go and hit some balls.

JN: So what did you when you arrived do back in Canada?JH: In my second year back I coached the women’s team at King’s (‘ 07/08). I then was offered a job to coach men’s volleyball at Grant MacEwan. In my first year with them we won provincials and nationals.Nationals were hosted in Fort McMurray so afterwards we went to the CLAC office and watched highlights of the championship and celebrated.

JN: What advice would you give to any current Eagle’s student athletes?JH: (Pause). Work hard. Stay patient. It’s amazing how much you will grow and how much more you can grow after university. Just keep plugging through any difficulties as the early 20s are years of so much change. I was the best athlete when I was 26. Most don’t peak until their late 20s, so be patient.

JN: Couple of quick questions for you: Most enjoyable course?JH: All the music history courses with Dr. Kloppers.

JN: Most memorable athletics moments?JH: Winning bronze at the end of my fourth year. That was really special.

JN: If you could have one piece of the school named after you, what would it be?JH: (Pause). Named after me? Oh, that’s hilarious. I suppose a practice room in the music wing.

AND WIN!

The King’s Foundation Makes Things HappenBy President Melanie Humphreys

Thank you to The King’s Foundation. You have supported some strategic initiatives over the years and this year is

no different. Funding this year went to the final disbursement of a multi-year commitment that launched King’s Secondary Education Program, our new gym floor, and a feasibility study on continuous adult learning and education. In total, the Foundation supported $200,000 of initiatives this fiscal year.

The King’s Foundation continues to live into its vision. The King’s Foundation was created in 1985 during a time of real fiscal crisis for King’s. The Foundation’s vision is to be “an intentional, independent funding arm of The King’s University College to help support tomorrow’s Christian leaders in all spheres of life.” Its members have grown to 80 strong. Heartfelt thanks to all current and former members, to President Emeritus Henk Van Andel who recruited all those new members, to retiring Executive Director of the Foundation, Rick Struik for his faithful leadership of the organization over the past four years.

Put your best game face on, show some Eagles spirit and be entered to win great prizes! Fans that show the most pride will also be entered into the Grand Prize Draw at the end of the year.
