St. Joseph ofCupertino tSocial Justice MinistryMission Statement

The center of the Church's social teaching is the life, dignity andrights of every human person. Recognizing that the pursuit of so-cial ministry is an essential part of what makes a parish Catholic,we commit ourselves to concrete works of charity, justice andpeacemaking.

Each year Advent coincides with the frenzied weeks of Christmasshopping.

Advent is one of the gems of the liturgical year. It calls us to inte-rior preparation to celebrate the birth of Christ already dwellingwithin us by reason of our Baptism. It offers an opportunity tonourish ourselves with Scripture and spiritual reading, and perhapswith study of the Social Teaching of our Catholic Christian faith. We are preparing for a birth, so what better time to reflect on thebasic principle of Catholic Social Teaching; namely, the Right toLife and the Dignity of the Human Person.

This is the basis for ow opposition to anything that threatens hu-man life: the death penalty, human trafficking, abortion, euthana-sia, assisted suicide. This is the basis for the Church's "preferentialoption for the poor", and action to address the systemic structureswhich keep people in poverty and hunger.

There is a wealth of enlightening material to help us study Churchteaching on these proJife issues on the websites of our CatholicBishops, (USCCB, and CA Catholic Conference)

*BEREAVEMENT MINISTRY'This minisfiy is forgrieving families. Teams from the parish supply salads ordesserts for a small group of people in the family'shome or our community center following afweral. (If
