Program Overview: The Aboriginal population in Canada is young and growing at a rate faster than any other demographic. Aboriginal youth challenge leaders, communities and educators to provide them with opportunity to learn their history, languages and culture so that they can build self-confidence and take pride in taking their rightful place as contributing members of society. A language is not only a communication tool; it is arguably the cornerstone of culture. Aboriginal languages in Canada today are in critical states as highlighted in the recent report published by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada – Calls to Action (2015).

The ECEA program is designed to help bridge generational gaps and build in-service learning opportunities within Aboriginal communities. Access to education in early childhood aids in the healthy development of children, intellectually and socially. This program will help communities and their educators to prepare their own to design and deliver meaningful, quality early childhood education programs and services targeted to early childhood development that builds on their cultural strengths.

The ECEA program is designed to prepare proficient Ojibwe language speakers as early childhood educators in this highly specialized Anishinaabe immersion early childhood education program.

The ECEA program incorporates all aspects of Anishinaabe’aadiziwin (Anishinaabe worldview) extensively throughout the whole program. Anishinaabe’aadiziwin (Anishinaabe worldview) is necessary to accommodate learning styles and receptiveness of First Nations communities whom are mainly kinesthetic, tactile, visual and auditory learners. Total Immersion has been proven to be a successful model in producing language speakers at an early age, and there has been a gradual positive growth toward the implementing the best means of acquiring Anishinaabemowin. The method of Instruction in this program is Anishinaabemowin immersion, as immersion has been proven to produce language speakers. Teachers deliver the Anishinaabemowin ECE courses in the Ojibwe language as the method of instruction.

Admission RequirementsThe Kenjgewin Teg Anishinaabemowin Assessment Tool is a standardized method of testing for Anishinaabemowin retention and fluency. The Kenjgewin Teg Anishinaabemowin Assessment Tool will be administered at Kenjgewin Teg, and a student must have minimum of a A1 level of Anishinaabe language proficiency to be admitted into the program (and courses).
