Plan to succeed This handbook provides curriculum information to assist Laredo ISD students in making course selections that satisfy personal needs as well as high school graduation requirements. Several new courses are listed, and not all are available on each high school campus. Appropriate teacher certification and sufficient student enrollment are key factors in determining course offer-ings. Students should select courses to both challenge themselves and meet graduation requirements. Campus guidance counselors will assist with any questions.

Graduation Plan Descriptions Distinguished Achievement Program The Distinguished Achievement Program is available to all students who are serious about their studies, who want to be challenged and who want to earn college credit and/or do professional research level projects while still in high school. It is a twenty-six-credit program, which requires students to achieve any combination of four of the advanced measures approved by the State Board of Education. Students pursuing this program may enroll in pre-advanced placement courses, and Advanced Placement courses and take the appropriate Advanced Placement Exams. It is advisable that students also consider concurrent enrollment (taking college classes while enrolled in high school). Students must obtain four (4) measures from either: A. Original Research (2 measures) B. Test Data -3 or above score on AP test (4 measures) or PSAT Commended Scholar; NMSQT or NHSP recognition (1 measure) C. College courses with a B or higher grade (4 measures), including TECH PREP Articulated Courses (4 measures)

Recommended High School Program The Recommended High School Program is a twenty-six credit program which provides a solid academic foundation. As the name implies, it is the program recommended by the State Board of Education. Students wishing to complete this program and have this accomplishment recognized on the academic achievement record must complete all the course requirements listed under it. Students may also select courses designated as pre-advanced placement and/or for gifted and talented if they meet the prerequisites and/or requirements.

Texas Grant Program Students who successfully complete the Recommended Graduation Program or the Distinguished Achievement Program and who have financial need may be eligible for grants to cover tuition and fees to Texas public universities, community colleges and technical schools under the TEXAS (Toward Excellence, Access, and Success) Grant Program as established by House Bill 713. Financial need is determined by completing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid or FASFA during the senior year. For specific program guidelines, see your counselor.

Minimum Program The Minimum Program requires 22 credits. Students following this plan may select any course in each of the designated curricular areas from the State Board of Education's list of approved courses. The minimum plan is not a college preparation program and is only available to students unable to pursue a higher plan. (Not eligible for the Texas Grant Program)

Early Graduation Program High School requirements are typically completed in four years. However, students can complete all requirements one year earlier graduating as a junior instead of as a senior. Early graduation with a high school diploma can be achieved by complying with the following: (1) Students must apply for early graduation in the spring semester of their sophomore year by filling out an Early Graduation Application Form, (2)Students must pass all areas of the exit level TAKS test, (3)Students must have completed the required 26 credits mandated by the state and district on their graduation plan (including corre-spondence courses),(4)Students must pass all areas of the THEA, be exempt from taking the THEA or by approval of the principal, and (5)Students must obtain counselor, principal and parental approval. Failure to complete any of the preceding items will result in the student NOT being eligible to graduate with a high school diploma in three years. Note: Please see counselor for additional information.

State Assessment/Graduation Requirement In addition to completing the credit requirements under a specific graduation plan, the student must also pass the end-of-course (EOC) assessment designed to measure students academic performance in core high school courses. The End-of-Course will become part of the graduation requirements beginning with the freshman class of 2011-2012. In addition, a student’s score on each EOC assessment will be worth 15% of the student’s final grade for that course. End-of-Course assessments for secondary-level courses will be given in Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, English I, English II, English III, World Geography, World History and United States History. Students entering high school prior to 2011-2012 must pass the TAKS Exit Exams in English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. (www.tea.state.tx.us)

Valedictorian and Salutatorian Valedictorian and salutatorian honors shall be awarded to the two students with the highest point weighted GPA’s in the graduating class. To calculate the top-ranking students, grades shall be carried out to the fifth decimal place or further to break a tie. There shall be no co- valedictorian or co-salutatorian. If two students have identical scores, the final grade point average shall be computed by averaging only those that both students have in common.

To be eligible for valedictorian or salutatorian honors, a student shall: 1. Have been enrolled in the same district high school for the last two academic years; 2. Be enrolled in at least: a. Two credits for the final semester of residency, contingent upon concurrent enrollment in an institution of higher learning; b. Three credits for the final semester of residency contingent upon proof of employment; or c. Four credits for all others.

Letter grades of transferred students from outside the District shall be assigned the following value, If a numerical value is not provided: A+ = 98 B+ = 88 C+ = 78 D+ = 68 A = 95 B = 85 C = 75 D = 65 A- = 92 B- = 82 C- = 72 D- = 62 F = Numerical average if so transcribed, or if not, the number assigned shall be 59.

Weighted Grading System Beginning with the freshman class of school year 2008-2009, courses will be classified as non-weighted, weighted Pre/AP, weighted AP, or weighted dual college credit.

• Weighted Pre-AP/AP/Dual Credit courses grades will be multiplied By 1.10. • Weighted for enrollment in an AP courses with a qualifying score of 3, 4, or 5 AP exam shall be calculated by 1.15. • Weighted for enrollment in AP course without a qualifying AP score shall be calculated by 1.10. • Students receiving dual college credit shall receive the numerical grade that was earned in the course. Concurrent Early Enrollment High school students in their junior year may enroll concurrently at the local university or community college if they meet criteria as set by the institution of higher learning. Concurrent enrollment is the opportunity to take University level courses for university credit while still in high school. Students must be enrolled in at least two courses at their respective high school and may enroll in a maximum of two college courses. Each student participating in concurrent enrollment is responsible for his/her college tuition. Some students may qualify for concurrent enrollment tuition scholarships from the respective colleges or other funding sources. Please see your counselor for details. Refer to current college/university catalogues or college admissions counselors.

Dual Credit Program The Dual Credit Program allows an LISD student to enroll in approved college courses and receive high school credit if the student makes a passing grade on the college course. Furthermore, if a student receives a grade of B or better on the college course, he/she earns an advanced measure towards the Distinguished Achievement Graduation Plan. A passing grade will grant credit. Beginning with freshmen in 2008-2009, dual credit courses will be weighted. Course approval must be granted by curriculum and Instruction prior to registration. HB1 Dual Credit Courses 1. Agreements are in place with Laredo Community College to offer dual credit courses for identified student cohorts. To be eligible students must have THEA scores of 230 in reading, 220 in writing and 230 in math. These courses include:

(A) English 1301 * (B) English 1302 (C) College Algebra 1314 – Independent Study in Math (4th credit in math) (D) US History 1302 – U S History (E) Psychology 2301 – High School Psychology

* 1301 is a prerequisite for English 1302 in order to grant credit for high school English IV

2. To be eligible to enroll and be awarded credit toward state graduation requirements, a student must have the approval of the high school principal or other school official designated by the school district. The course for which credit is awarded must provide advanced academic instruction beyond, or in greater depth than, the essential knowledge and skills for the equivalent high school course (19 TAC 74.25). In addition, students must obtain a copy of the Dual Credit Enrollment Form from the counselor’s office that includes a course recommendation. In order for Dual Credit to be honored, students must submit a copy of their official college transcript to their counselor prior to the succeeding school semester. Top 10 Percent Eligible for Automatic Admission Under the House Bill 588, students who are in the top 10% of their graduating class are eligible for automatic admission to any public University in Texas with the exception of the University of Texas at Austin. Credit by Exam, Transfers, Correspondence Courses And Course Sequence

Credit by Exam with Prior Instruction Credit by exam is offered in a number of subject areas to the student who takes a course but fails it. The student who does not receive credit for a course due to excessive absences is not eligible for credit by exam. A student shall attain a grade of at least 70 or above on the exam in order to receive credit for the course. Credit by exams with prior instruction are available in the following areas: English I, II, III, and IV, Algebra I and II, Geometry, Physical Science, Chemistry, Biology, U.S. History, World History, U.S. Government, Economics, and Spanish I. A grade received in a credit by exam with prior instruction will not be used to complete the grade point average. Credit by Exam for Accreditation without Prior Instruction Graduation credit requirements may be fulfilled by earning a grade of at least a ninety (90) on the Credit by Exam without prior instruction. Exams are administered twice a year. For dates and additional information, please see your counselor. Credit by Exam without prior instruction grades will be included in the grade point average. Correspondence Courses Graduation credit requirements may be fulfilled by successfully completing correspondence courses from U .T. at Austin or Texas Tech University. . English II SOL: Speakers of other Languages (SOL) Credit 1.0 Local Course# 140314 Pre-requisite: Recent Immigrant/Continuing LEP at Beginning or Intermediate Level of English Language Proficiency. Students continue to increase and refine their communication skills in the language components of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. High school students are expected to plan, draft and complete written compositions on a regular basis. An emphasis is placed on organizing logical arguments with clearly expressed related definitions, thesis, and evidence. Students learn literary forms and terms associated with selections being read and interpret the possible influences of the historical context on a literary work. Students identified as Limited English Proficient (LEP) who are at the beginning or intermediate level of English language proficiency, as defined by 19 TAC§74.4(d) relating to English Language Proficiency Standards, may be enrolled in ESOL I or ESOL II. LEP students who successfully complete ESOL I and ESOL II may satisfy the English I and English II graduation requirement (s). Students who take ESOL I and/or ESOL II to satisfy their English I and/ or English II Requirement (s) are required to take the English I and/or English II EOC exam as part of their graduation requirements.

English III Credit 1.0 Local Course# 110134 Pre-requisite: English II Students will engage in activities that build on their prior knowledge and skills in order to strengthen their reading, writing and oral language skills. Students will read and compose a wide variety of written texts, research and know how to locate, synthesize and organize information, listen and respond to ideas of others and learn how to use oral and written conventions of the English Language.

English IV Credit 1.0 Local Course# 110144 Pre-requisite: English III Students will engage in activities that build on their prior knowledge and skills in order to strengthen their reading, writing and oral language skills. Students will read and compose a wide variety of written texts, research and know how to locate, synthesize and organize information, listen and respond to ideas of others and learn how to use oral and written conventions of the English Language.

AP English Literature and Composition AP English IV Credit 1.0 Local Course# 130114 Pre-requisite: English III Content prescribed in the College Board Publication Advanced Placement Course Description: English published by the College Board. This Publication may be obtained from the College Advanced Placement Program.

English 1301 Dual Credit (with successful completion of 1302 also) Pre-requisite: DENG 0370, satisfactory score on standard assessment test, or exemption from any TSI test (See Texas Success Initiative) Develop students’ expository and analytical writing skills by guiding them through the multiple stages of the writing process and by creating awareness of authorial voice, audience, purpose, and occasion. Students will also employ critical thinking and reading skills in the evaluation of selected readings designed to further emphasize the writing process. Provides an introduction to writing the documented essay, acquiring information literacy skills, and evaluating printed and electronic sources.

English 1302 Dual Credit (with successful completion of 1301 also) Pre-requisite: English 1301 This course offers a continuation of the expository and analytical writing skills developed in English 1301 and introduces the principles of argumentation and more extensive interpretation of selected readings. Students will again be engaged in all steps of the writing process, generating argumentative essays based on thoughtful analysis and discussion of reading assignments. In addition, students will be guided through the steps of more sophisticated research writing techniques, information literacy skills, and evaluation of primary and secondary sources, culminating in a series of essay length research projects.

English Language Arts/Reading Graduation Requirements

• ESOL I and II serve as the English I and II classes, respectively, for recent immigrants who are required to enroll in ESOL I and II.

• English 1301 and 1302 are college courses that may be taken for dual credit to satisfy the English IV requirements.

• Additional English Language Arts/Reading electives may be taken once graduation requirements are met..

Emphasis is placed on breathing techniques, characteristic tone, rhythmic reading, major scales (natural), sight- reading and basic instrumental music literature. Private lessons and master classes will comprise the instructional strategy. Students will also receive help with the Texas all state music as well as U.I.L. solo and ensemble material.
