Science 2.0 consultation
‘Science 2.0’ describes the on-going evolution in themodus operandi of doing research and organising science. These changes in the dynamics of science and researchare enabled by digital technologies and driven by theglobalisation of the scientific community, as well as theneed to address the Grand Challenges of our times. Theyhave an impact on the entire research cycle, from theinception of research to its publication, as well as on theway in which this cycle is organised.

UCL LIBRARY SERVICES
Science 2.0 consultation
The three main objectives of the consultation were: to assess the degree of awareness amongst the stakeholders of
the changing modus operandi
to assess the perception of the opportunities and challenges
to identify possible policy implications and actions to strengthen thecompetitiveness of the European science and research system byenabling it to take full advantage of the opportunities offered byScience 2.0
Results of the Consultation will be announced in thecoming weeks

What do research universities think ofScience 2.0? Universities are generally
favourable to Science 2.0approaches
The concept of making researchdata ‘open’ is new to some, butpractised by others
Universities worry about thecosts of research datamanagement
Some Arts and Humanitiesresearchers wonder how thediscussion relates to them 13

Text and Data Mining (TDM) – what is it?
TDM derives informationfrom machine-readmaterial
It works by copying largequantities of material, extracting the data, andrecombining it to identifypatterns
Essential aspect ofScience 2.0 or OpenScience

TDM
Less TDM activity isundertaken in Europe thanother parts of the globe, partly because of Europeancopyright frameworks
Publishers offering licencesfor TDM which are limiting
EU TDM Expert Group hasargued for an Exception forTDM in EU copyright laws
