EARLY

Have your youngest students ever had the chance to work with a highly-trained master teaching artist in their own classroom? Have you ever wished you had the chance to gain professional development working side-by-side with a master teaching artist?

Thanks to the Offi ce of Early Learning and generous donors, Young Audiences and the Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning Through the Arts can now offer high-need Baltimore City preschool and kindergarten classrooms the opportunity to bring in a master teaching artist for an 8-week, 16-session residency at 80 to 90% off of the cost.

This opportunity helps principals with limited resources provide hands-on learning in the arts that supplements and enriches the curriculum.

Professional artists who are trained in early childhood education can serve as a great resource for early learning classrooms. Integrating the arts in education at an early stage in a child’s development is a particularly urgent task as it:

Motivates and engages children in learning, stimulates memory, facilitates understanding, enhances symbolic communication, promotes relationships, and provides an avenue for building competence.

Provides a natural source of learning. Child development specialists note that play is the business of young children; play is the way children promote and enhance their development. The arts are a natural vehicle for play.

Plays a central role in cognitive, motor, language, and social-emotional development.

The way we engage children in the first years of their lives has a profound impact on future learning and success.

Classroom residencies are highly-collaborative, creative associations between teaching artists and early childhood educators in preschool and kindergarten classrooms.

In each 16-session residency (more than 8 weeks), a Wolf Trap teaching artist partners with a classroom teacher to develop and implement performing arts-based lessons that engage children and enrich their learning environment. Residencies are designed to:

• demonstrate how to use performing arts experiences to get children more engaged

• improve learning in areas specified by the required curriculum

• ensure the performing arts become integrated into the teacher’s daily routine

Once the teaching artist leaves, the teacher has lesson plans, a toolbox of arts-integrated techniques, and hands-on experience!

WHAT YOUR SCHOOL RECEIVES:

Selected schools will be required to:

• Provide 10 to 20% of the total program cost of the 8-week, 16-session residency (approximately $300-$500 per classroom). The Office of Early Learning and the funding community will cover the additional 80 to 90%.

• Complete a classroom profile before the orientation meeting.

• Attend a pre-planning session and a post-residency end-of-year debrief hosted by the Office of Early Learning.

• Complete an online pre- and post-program survey.
