Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time This Week on Retreat, along with Fr. Fred This week, Fr. Fred and I will make our annual pilgrimage to the Jesuit run White House Retreat. I say that this is an “annual pilgrimage,” because many of us archdiocesan priests have been going on retreat together at the White House for some years. The Office of Continuing Formation for Priests sponsors this retreat, making it a well-planned and prayerful week for all who attend. This year, the theme of the retreat is: Entering into the Heart of Christ: Scriptural Reflections Deepening and Re-Energizing Our Priestly Vocation. Our Retreat Master, Fr. Anthony Wieck, SJ. is a full-time staff member at the White House Retreat, and teaches courses on the Holy Trinity and prayer at Kenrick-Glennon Seminary. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Fr. Fred and I did not make our retreat last year. So, this Retreat is a bit overdue. In your kindness, please keep Fr. Fred and me in your prayers, as I assure you that you all are remembered daily in ours. While away, our good Deacons will provide a Communion Service at 6:30 a.m., and Fr. Eddie will provide morning Mass at 8:00 a.m., Monday through Thursday. All will be back to normal schedule Friday morning. As a reminder, be sure to check the schedule to see what, is being offered when, by whom. Oh, you know what I mean. Annual Priests Purgatorial Mass I had the honor of concelebrating the 12:05 p.m. Mass on Tuesday, November 2nd, at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis, with Archbishop Rozanski, Bp. Rivituso, Bp. Herman and about fifty other priests from our Archdiocese. This Annual Purgatorial Mass is an act of faith and fraternal charity that we priests can do for each other, as we do so often for the people of our parishes. Much like our All Souls Day Mass of Remembrance here at St. Peter Church, the names of the priests who had died this past year were read at Mass….eleven of us, if I counted correctly. In memory of all those priests who died this past year, a sanctuary candle was lit for each priest and placed in the Sanctuary of the Cathedral Basilica. These candles serve as a reminder of and in appreciation for their dedicated years of service to the Archdiocese of St. Louis. A Prayer for Priests, by Richard Cardinal Cushing, Archbishop of Boston O Almighty Eternal God, look upon the face of Thy Son, and for the love of Him who is the Eternal High Priest, have pity on Thy priests. Remember, O most compassionate God, that they are but weak and frail human beings. Stir up in them the grace of their vocation which is in them by the imposition of the bishop’s hands. Keep them close to Thee, lest the enemy prevail against them, so that they may never do anything in the slightest degree unworthy of their sublime vocation. O Jesus, I pray Thee for Thy faithful and fervent priests; for Thy unfaithful and tepid priests; for Thy priests laboring at home or abroad in distant mission fields; for Thy tempted priests; for Thy lonely priests; for Thy dying priests; for the souls of Thy priests in purgatory. But above all I commend to Thee priests dearest to me; the priest who baptized me; the priest who absolved me from my sins; the priests at whose Masses I assisted, and who gave me Thy Body and Blood in Holy Communion; the priests who taught and instructed me, or helped and encouraged me; all the priests to whom I am indebted in any other way, particularly N. O Jesus, keep them all close to Thy Heart, and bless them abundantly in time and in eternity. Amen.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord. And let perpetual light shine upon them.

May they rest in peace. Amen. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed,

Through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen Sincerely yours in Jesus,

THE SEARCH-Video & Discussion Series: Last Week & This Week. Last Week: We are more than halfway through the series, but it is not too late to join us. Last Monday evening members of our parish gathered at the parish café to participate in the fourth

episode of a video discussion program offered by St. Augustine Institute entitled The Search. Episode 4, answered the question: What’s Our Story? Your life is a story. And it’s caught up in the great story of humanity. This great story, as we see it in the Scrip-tures, shows us the amazing love story that is God’s pursuit of man. The God that is love created, so we can ultimately be with his love. We were made to be with God. Union with God is so central to the purpose of life, we even see the afterlife in these terms. Our definition of Heaven is union with God, and hell is absence of Him. Your life has a plot. Your life has purpose. Your life has value. We need to see how we fit into this big love story to begin to know why we exist. And that love of God isn’t abstract. It has a face and name: Jesus. If you were not able to attend in person, here’s the link to Episode 4: https://watch.formed.org/videos/thesearch-ep4 This Week: This week’s gathering will be on Monday, Novem-ber 8th at 6:30 p.m. in the parish café. Episode of The Search answers the question: Who is Jesus? The most beautiful part of this story is that we can know God's love, personally. This is the person of Jesus. But how did this seemingly insignificant carpen-ter born into poverty in a dusty corner of the Roman Empire become the most pivotal figure in all of history? Christianity isn’t simply a philosophy for life – the center of Christianity is a person. We look at the life of Jesus and what he came to do. Ultimately, we need to decide if Jesus really was who he said he was. We can’t sit on the fence. Because if Jesus really was who he said he was, we need to make him the Lord of our lives, and everything changes. If you are not able to attend in person, here’s the link to Episode 5: https://watch.formed.org/videos/thesearch-ep5 Participant Guide Book: A Participant Guide is available for everyone who chooses to register for this series, whether you are attending in person, or doing it on your own. Books are available in the parish office or send an email to [email protected] and let me know how best to get a copy to you. November is starting off with rather cool weather. I love the cooler weather, but I know it means our boilers will be run-ning and our utility bills will go up. Part of last month I spent going through old files in a storage area in the rectory

basement. Such great finds! The average gas bill for the campus in 1963 was about $30/month. The electric bill averaged less than $200/month. For comparison, in the fiscal year 7/1/20- 6/30/21 the gas bill averaged $1750/month and the electric bill for same period averaged $3625/month! We also found records from the Western Catholic Union branch # 286 meetings. This is/was a fraternal life insurance society. Their meeting motions from the 1930’s include a note in November 1931 that fifty cents is to be expended for flowers for those members who are seriously ill, and in January 1934 the financial secretary was to be paid an annual sal-ary of $10.00. Their annual donation to the Hospital Auxiliary was $5.00. How times have changed!! As you read this, the removal of the old boilers in the 1924 building (this is the old school building) is complete. The installation of the LED lamps on campus is finishing up and the finishing touches on the basement of the Parish Center should be com-pleted. What’s next you ask? Well, the work on the hill between the Parish Center and the church should start within a month. We are still working with the insurance company on the claim for lightning dam-age to the organ. You might notice it sometimes “plays by itself” or despite what Lee is telling it to play, it will play in two different keys, or doesn’t play notes it should. Makes Lee’s job so much more challenging! You still have time to sign up for the pictorial directory! We have appointments available Nov. 29th and 30th. I too, do not like having my picture taken, but think of it this way – you know who you are, but new members to our parish don’t. And many times, you see someone you know but can’t quite put the name with the face. Your picture in the directory helps.

Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time Entrance Antiphon Psalm 88:3 Let my prayer come into your presence. Incline your ear to my cry for help, O Lord. Reading I 1 Kgs 17:10-16 In those days, Elijah the prophet went to Zarephath. As he arrived at the entrance of the city, a widow was gathering sticks there; he called out to her, "Please bring me a small cupful of water to drink." She left to get it, and he called out after her, "Please bring along a bit of bread." She answered, "As the LORD, your God, lives, I have nothing baked; there is only a handful of flour in my jar and a little oil in my jug. Just now I was collecting a couple of sticks, to go in and prepare something for myself and my son; when we have eaten it, we shall die." Elijah said to her, "Do not be afraid. Go and do as you propose. But first make me a little cake and bring it to me. Then you can prepare something for yourself and your son. For the LORD, the God of Israel, says, 'The jar of flour shall not go empty, nor the jug of oil run dry, until the day when the LORD sends rain upon the earth.'" She left and did as Elijah had said. She was able to eat for a year, and he and her son as well; the jar of flour did not go empty, nor the jug of oil run dry, as the LORD had foretold through Elijah. Responsorial Psalm Ps 146:7, 8-9, 9-10 R. (1b) Praise the Lord, my soul! Praise the Lord! It is the LORD who preserves fidelity forever, who does justice to those who are oppressed. It is He who gives bread to the hungry, the LORD who sets prisoners free. R. Praise the Lord, my soul! Praise the Lord! The LORD who opens the eyes of the blind. The LORD raises up those who were bowed down. It is the LORD who loves the just, the LORD who protects the stranger. R. Praise the Lord, my soul! Praise the Lord! The LORD upholds the orphan and the widow, but thwarts the path of the wicked. The LORD will reign forever; the God of Zion, from age to age. Alleluia. R. Praise the Lord, my soul! Praise the Lord! Reading II Heb 9:24-28 Christ did not enter into a sanctuary made by hands, a copy of the true one, but heaven itself, that he might now appear before God on our behalf. Not that he might offer himself repeatedly, as the high priest enters each year into the sanctuary with blood that is not his own; if that were so, he would have had to suffer repeatedly from the foundation of the world. But now once for all he has appeared at the end of the ages to take away sin by his sacrifice. Just as it is appointed that human beings die once, and after this the judgment, so also Christ, offered once to take away the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to take away sin but to bring salvation to those who eagerly await him. Alleluia Mt 5:3 R. Alleluia, alleluia. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel Mk 12:38-44 In the course of his teaching Jesus said to the crowds, "Beware of the scribes, who like to go around in long robes and accept greetings in the marketplaces, seats of honor in synagogues, and places of honor at banquets. They devour the houses of widows and, as a pretext recite lengthy prayers. They will receive a very severe condem-nation." He sat down opposite the treasury and observed how the crowd put money into the treasury. Many rich peo-ple put in large sums. A poor widow also came and put in two small coins worth a few cents. Calling his disciples to himself, he said to them, "Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury. For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had, her whole livelihood." Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense against the wicked-ness and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls.
