Remember to learn the meaning of each of the

tricky words.

This will help you use the words correctly in a

sentence.

Spelling Rules Rule 1 = After a short vowel you must have 2

letters before adding the ending.

Rule 2 = After a short vowel always use -ll, -ff, -ss, -zz, -ck on the end of the base word.

Rule 4 = After a short vowel use ‘–tch’ for the [ch] sound, but not for such, much, rich and which.

Rule 6 = After a short vowel use ‘–dge’ for the [j] sound.

Revision of terms covered in previous years • A noun can be the name for a person, the name

for a place or the name for a thing.

• A verb is a doing, or action, word.

• A proper noun is the special name for a person,place or thing (and needs a capital).

• An adjective describes a noun.

• An adverb describes a verb.

• The subject of a sentence is who (or what) weare talking about.
