British School of Bucharest is the only British school in Romania ratedas “excellent” for both “the quality of pupils’ learning and achievements” and the “quality of pupils’ personal development” in its 2018 UKIndependent Schools Inspectorate report.

We are exceptionally proud of this outstanding judgement and know it is testament to all the incredible hard work, commitment and dedication of everyone within the BSB community.

The quality of the pupils’personal development is Excellent“Children in the EYFS show high levels of participation in their learning and make confident progress in asking for help, talking with partners and manipulating technical equipment including laptops. As a result of the guidance, the knowledge they gain and monitoring and support provided through the teaching, children successfully take on challenges across the EYFS curriculum. Each child is well prepared for the next stage in their learning because of revision built into their programme.”

“Throughout the school, pupils consistently reflect in their attitudes and behaviour the values encapsulated in the school’s aims. This is because the leadership of the school ensures that both the quality of pastoral care and the attention given to school environment contribute to the development of pupils confidence in themselves and in their surroundings. Pupils rapidly learn the value of self-control in their dealings with others, growing in confidence from their first experiences in the EYFS; teachers speak to them persuasively, reward them, and give them time to think about how they behave and can achieve their goals.”

ensurING a personalised and highly supportive learning environment

The British School of Bucharest (BSB) is an established, well-resourced international private school located in Bucharest that provides a comprehensive international education based on the National Curriculum for England.

The British School of Bucharest serves more than 500 students aged 2-18. It is a richly diverse learning community, with students representing approximately 50 nationalities. They benefit from a low student-teacher ratio and small class sizes, which ensures a personalised and highly supportive learning environment.

The education offered by BSB is divided into:

• Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS): Pre-Nursery (aged 2-3)* Nursery (aged 3-4)* Reception (aged 4-5)*• Primary School (Year 1-Year 6, aged 5-11)*• Secondary School (Year 7-Year 13, aged 11-18)*.

*The ages in brackets are the age of the child on 31st Au gust for a September start.

EYFS Overview

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) applies at British School of Bucharest to children from two to five years of age. A child’s experience in the early years has a major impact on their future learning.

The EYFS is a framework that provides assurance that children will be able to experience the best possible start in life - an experience that provides opportunities for children to develop their abilities and talents in a playful environment where they feel safe, secure and happy.

Aims and Objectives:

BSB aims to fulfill the expectations of the EYFS Statutory Framework published by the Department for Education. Our play-oriented learning approach meets children’s educational, social and personal needs and is based on these four EYFS principles:

• A Unique Child • Positive Relationships • Enabling Environments • Learning and Development

we aim to develop and model caring, respectful, professional relationships

A Unique Child

At BSB we recognise that children develop in individual ways and at varying rates. All children are treated fairlyregardless of race, religion or abilities. All children and their families are valued within our school. We believe that all our students matter and we give every individual the opportunity to achieve their best.

Positive Relationships

We recognise that parents are children’s first and most enduring educators. We value the contribution they make and encourage parents to view themselves as partners in their child’s education. At BSB we aim to develop and model caring, respectful, professional relationships with all members of staff, our students and their families and carers.

Enabling Environments

At BSB we recognise that the environment plays a key role in supporting and extending children’s development. This begins by observing the children and assessing their interests, needs and ambitions, before planning challenging but achievable activities and experiences to extend each individual’s learning.

EYFS classrooms are organised to allow children to explore and learn securely and safely. The classrooms are set up into learning areas, in which children are able to access resources independently. The outdoor area is seen as an extension of the classroom.

At BSB we value all areas of learning and development equally

Learning and Development

BSB holds children’s play in high esteem - ‘In their play children learn at their highest level,’ (EYFS). Play allows children to:

• think critically, explore and make sense of the world; • practice and build up ideas; • learn how to control themselves and understand the need for rules; • communicate with others as they investigate and solve problems; • engage in active learning (acting out ideas, people and events); • feel motivated and interested; • have some independence and control over their learning; • develop the confidence to make decisions and to take risks; • take ownership of their learning; • discover connections and develop understanding;

Learning and development is categorised into three prime areas of learning:

• Communication and language • Physical development • Personal, social and emotional development

Additionally there are four specific areas of learning:

• Literacy • Mathematics • Understanding the world • Expressive arts and design

At BSB we value all areas of learning and development equally and understand that they are interconnected, depend on each other, and should not be taught in isolation from the others.

Asking questions reinforces their learning and helps them to retain information

10

Understanding the learningneeds of your child

In order to understand how to best help your child to learn, our teachers carry out continuous classroomobservations as the children play and work, gradually building up a portfolio for each child. This consists of a series of observational notes, photographs, and samples of work taken throughout the year to provide evidence of their engagement and achievements. Parents are also encouraged to participate in the development of this portfolio by providing documentation or accounts of learning at home.

Homework and Home support

EYFS children do not have formal homework set. Reception children will, at some point during the year, take home a reading book when they are ready to begin more formal reading. Even though there is no formal homework assigned at this level there are many ways in which you can support your child at home, including speaking to them about their day and asking them what they did. Asking questions and having the children explain what they did at school reinforces their learning and helps them to retain information.

Teachers aim to set appropriatetargets for future development

Daily Schedule

A key element of a daily schedule is learning through play. Child-initiated activities are well balanced with adult-led activities, giving the children the opportunity to be more autonomous in their learning. Teachers then aim to set appropriate targets for future development as a result of their assessment.

In the EYFS, learning is supported through continuous provision or in other words, the careful preparation of the learning environment such that children are encouraged to engage in learning activities of their choice withincreasing independence. This environment, which not only includes the classroom and outdoor learning areas, but also a range of specialist areas around the school,is then further enhanced to suit the specific needs andinterests of the children to secure motivation andengagement.

The classrooms and the outdoor playgrounds include specific learning areas with educational materials in place to stimulate all of the senses: sand, water, playdough, construction material, books, technology and musical instruments. Every activity, whether initiated by children or by teachers, leads to students’ academic, social and personal development.

Our campus is a positive place where children can feel very comfortable and happy

Safe and Caring Environment

Children who come to BSB enjoy a friendly, safe and caring environment where they can enjoy learning through play and developing their creativity, self-esteem and self-confidence. Our campus is a positive place where children can feel very comfortable and happy with their educational, social and personal development. Teachers encourage care and respect through the EYFS programme – and children learn to treat each other, and the wider BSB community, in a respectful manner.

Special services for Pre-Nursery and Nursery: Home Visits and Transition Period

Our teachers and staff are very experienced in helping children to settle in to Pre-Nursery and Nursery. They give children individual attention and make sure each child can relate to something familiar to increase feelings of comfort and create a positive learning experience for them.

Parents are welcome to discuss early collection of their child in the first week of school to ease the transition, if necessary, and we are happy to arrange for a child’s Class Teacher to make a home visit before term starts. These visits take place during one afternoon at the end of August/start of September and need to be booked with the school via email ([email protected]) in advance.

At BSB we promote a healthy lifestyle across the school

School lunch and morning snack

At BSB, we promote a healthy lifestyle across the school. This is reflected in our school lunches, which provide students with a high-quality complete meal. As parents and we know, active, growing children need to eat regularly, so alongside fresh and tasty meals, we also provide a nutritious snack at morning break.

We have our own in-house catering team that prepares lunch on campus, giving us complete control over the menu and the quality of the ingredients used. Supporting our focus on promoting a healthy lifestyle, we include the dining halls as part of the broader educational experience by placing emphasis on hygiene, good table manners and respect for others.

Transportation Service:

We have a fleet of school minibuses available to transport pupils to and from school each day, across an extensive coverage area. The children are escorted on every journey by a BSB Teaching Assistant. Safety is our main concern. This is why the children are picked up and dropped off inside the BSB campus.
