A Note from Fr. Mike
As we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord we experience the love that He continues to show us each and every day. In response to this experience we renew our baptismal promises, we commit ourselves anew to faithful discipleship, we allow the love of God to light up not just our lives, but also the life of our community of faith and of our world. We go forth this weekend refreshed and renewed to serve God and one another with grateful hearts. As we have experienced the death and resurrection of Christ, we are also invited to live it out in our own lives, to die to ourselves, so that we can rise to new and greater life in Christ Jesus. On behalf of all of us who have the privilege and honor of serving you here at Immaculate Heart of Mary parish, we pray that your Easter be full of hope and joy.
Peace,
Fr. Mike

St. Bartholomew Academy Academy in Action When Art and Writing Collide
Our middle school writing teacher, Mrs. Schoendorf, challenges the students so they are equipped with the skills to succeed. The sixth grade completed a cross-curricular art and writing activity. They listened to “It’s a Wonderful World” and drew a picture based upon a list of adjectives they heard in the song. Then, using post-it notes, they had their classmates label their picture using positive attributes. Each student wrote a short story using the adjectives the other students provided about their picture. Next, the students will be working on creating a menu, from appetizers to desserts! Seventh grade took time to practice contemplative writing. The students had to think about a woman in their life that emulated the qualities of the Blessed Mother and write several paragraphs about how this “Modern Day Mary” impacted their lives. The students have also incorporated art into their writing. They read the story “All Summer in a Day” set on the planet Venus where the sun only comes out for two days every seven years. The class then drew a picture of the planet using figurative language in a descriptive writing format. The eighth grade has been incorporating art into writing. The class recently read “Flowers for Algernon,” and participated in a Multiple Intelligences Survey as well as created their own Rorschach Inkblots. Later this month, the students will begin preparing their resumes, as well as learning to write a cover letter and a thank you note.

Archdiocese of Newark - Lenten Regulations
1. The days of both Fast and Abstinence during Lent are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the “paschal fast” -to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily His Resurrection. The other Fridays of Lent are days of Abstinence.
On a day of Fast, only one (1) full meal is permitted and two (2) smaller meals, which, if added together, would not exceed the main meal in quantity.
Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast. On a day of Abstinence, no meat may be eaten. Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged by the law of Abstinence.
2. The obligation to observe the laws of Fast and Abstinence “substantially,” is a serious one.
3. Fridays of the year outside of Lent are designated as days of penance, but each individual may substitute for the traditional abstinence from meat some other practice of voluntary self- denial as penance.
4. The time for fulfilling the Paschal Precept (Easter Duty*) extends from the First Sunday of Lent, February 18, 2018 to The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, May 27, 2018.
*Canon 920 §1. All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year.
Consider Men’s Cornerstone XI
The Men’s Cornerstone XI is a 26 hour weekend retreat which starts at 6pm Friday, April 27th and ends at 8pm Saturday, April 28th, 2018. It will be held at St Bartholomew’s Parish in Scotch Plains, NJ.
This is an opportunity to revitalize your relationship with God, meet other men of our parishes and learn and discuss how each other’s faith comes into play during everyday life in the real world.
All of your needs are met, the food is legendary, the fellowship is great and the personal development is confirmed by the hundreds of men that have gone through this ministry.
Treat yourself. Shut off the world for 26 hours. Take some personal time and develop a stronger faith. For more information or to register contact: Kevin Moloney: 908 230–9100 or email [email protected] or Skip Paal: 443 677–7088 or email [email protected]
