General Facts

• About 4.6 billion years old, as old as our solar system

• Average diameter of 12,742 kilometers. (7,926 miles)

• Temperature of the Earth's core is about 5000- 7000 degrees Celsius.

• The Earth's axis has a tilt of about 23 ½ degrees• Third planet from the Sun, fifth biggest in solar

system

Formation

• After the big Bang, the heat generated by the repeated high speed collisions of much smaller bodies of space rocks which continually clumped together and collided formed Earth

• The Earth is made mostly of iron, oxygen, silicon, magnesium, nickel and sulfur: 34.6% Iron, 29.5% Oxygen, 15.2% Silicon, 12.7% Magnesium, 2.4% Nickel, 1.9% Sulfur, 0.05% Titanium

Water on Earth

• As Earth cooled, water vapor began to escape and condense in the Earth's early atmosphere.

• Clouds formed and storms raged, raining more and more water down on the primitive earth, cooling the surface further until it was flooded with water, forming the seas.

Life

• It is estimated that the first life forms on earth were primitive, one-celled creatures that appeared about 3 billion years ago.

• Pretty much all there was for about the next two billion years.

Atmosphere

• Exosphere: outermost layer of earth. Mainly composed of hydrogen and helium. The particles in this area migrate into the solar winds

Atmosphere

• Thermosphere: low density molecules, the temperature is constant with the height. The bottom portion of this layer is called the exobase

Atmosphere• Mesosphere: extends

from 80-85 km. The meteors burn up in this part of the atmosphere. The temperature is the coldest temperature on earth (-121 degrees F) water freezes and there are ice clouds

Atmosphere

• Stratosphere: extends from 51 km. The temperature increases due to the ultraviolet rays. The ozone layer restricts turbulence and mixing.

Atmosphere• Troposphere: extends from 9km There is varied

weather and the temperature depends on the energy from earths surface. The lowest part of this part is the warmest.

• Iron 34.6% • Oxygen 29.5%%• Silicon 15.2% • Magnesium 12.7% • Nickel 2.4%• Sulfur 1.9%
