These contaminants have the potential to ruin an entire batch of recyclables! For example, food or liquids placed in the recycling cart can contaminate paper and cardboard by saturating the materials and making it impossible to recycle! You can prevent this problem by following these simple rules to recycle right: 1. Empty all bottles, cans and beverage cartons before recycling. 2. Keep food and liquids out of your recycling. 3. Place items loosely inside your recycling cart, no plastic bags. See page 4 for more information on how to recycle right! What to do with Household Hazardous Waste (HHW)

As you spruce up your home this Spring, you may be wondering what to do with leftover cleaning products and other household hazardous waste (HHW). These items require special disposal and cannot be thrown in your trash cart. Below are some tips that will help you handle household hazardous waste properly:

Buy Smart - Purchase non-toxic or less hazardous products in only the amount you need. Store Properly - Keep products out of reach of children and pets.

Use It Up - Finish all products and recycle the empty containers or donate what is left over.

Protect Our Communities - It is illegal to throw HHW into your household garbage, toilets, sinks or storm drains. HHW can seep into the groundwater, waterways and oceans, causing contamination of our drinking water, beach closures and health hazards to swimmers.

Dispose Properly - Kern County provides convenient drop off locations for HHW, E-Waste and other materials. See adjacent column to find a drop off location near you.

For more information on how to properly dispose of HHW, visit www.kerncountywaste.com.

Residential Drop Off Center Guidelines

Residential customers with accounts in good standing can utilize our Drop Off Center to safely dispose of large items and E-waste for FREE!

Waste Management residential customers with accounts in good standing can bring recyclables, bulky items, appliances, green/wood waste, metal, construction material, used motor oil & filters, household batteries, compact fluorescent light bulbs and E-waste to the Community Drop Off Center located at 19901 Neuralia Road at NO CHARGE.

• Residents who are not current on their payments, or who do not have an account with Waste Management, will not be permitted to drop off materials.

• Please check in with the Waste Management personnel on site before unloading your vehicle. They will tell you where and how to properly dispose of your waste in the roll off bins on site.

• The drop-off center is open Monday-Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm and 8:00 am to Noon on Saturdays.

Remember! Waste Management will also pick up your bulky items from the curb, at no additional cost. Customers are entitled to three (3) FREE bulky item pickups per year. Contact customer service at (760) 463-6024 at least 48 hours in advance to schedule your bulky item pickup.

California City customers can reduce the cost of their services by taking part in the “Pay as You Throw” program. Upon request, Waste Management will exchange your 95-gallon trash cart for a smaller container. The smaller the container, the lower the rate!

Customers who opt for this service must return their larger trash cart and a smaller cart will be delivered. Ideal candidates for the program are avid recyclers who typically don’t fill their current 95-gallon trash cart on a weekly basis. Contact Waste Management customer service to sign up!

Sharps Home Delivery

Low-income customers may be eligible to receive 20 percent off their monthly bill. In order to qualify, customers must be considered the head of the household and qualify for the CARE (California Alternate Rate for Energy) program. Contact Waste Management at (760) 463-6024 for more information.
