Fill the pit with agro waste ,cow dung, and

fallen leaves from trees (5-12-2009)

Leave it for two weeks.sprinkle water regularly.

Waste from Noon meal centre is put into the pit.

After two weeks earth worm was applied on the bedding(13-12-2009)

After three weeks We can observe the Vermicomposed manure at the top of the pit. (The appearance of black granular crumbly powder on top of vermibeds indicate harvest stage of the compost. )

•Watering is stopped for at least 5 days at this stage. •The earthworms go down and the compost is collected from the top.•Separate the baby worms and worm cocoons from it by sieving method.

Now the manure is ready to use.

• Prepare a mixture of cow dung and dried leaves in 1:1 proportion. • Release earthworm 50 numbers/10 kg. Of mixture and mix dried grass/leaves or husk and keep it in shade. • Sprinkle water over it time to time to maintain moisture level. By this process, earthworms multiply 300 times within one to two months. • These earthworms can be used to prepare vermicompost.

If you have no adequate place at your home you may use a basket and hang it in a suitable cool

place at your home to convert the home garbage into manure.

•100% pure and biodegradable that acts multi purpose soil conditioners. •Enhance the efficiency of fertilizers, protect against bacterial and fungal infection and helps in keeping the temperature of soil under control. •Hence we may use this as Vermi bed layer to keep the moisture for the earthworm.

•Vermicompost pit should be protected from direct sun light.

•To maintain moisture level, spray water on the pit when required.

•Protect the worms from ant, rat and bird.

Precautions

•Vermicompost is an eco friendly natural fertilizer• It does not have any adverse effect on soil, plant and environment.•It improves water retention capacity of soil because of its high organic matter content.• It promotes better root growth and nutrient absorption.• Earthworm castings in the home garden often contain 5 to 11 times more nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium as the surrounding soil.•Promoting home composting as a solution to reduce global warming caused by methane by degradable waste in landfills.
