EARTHQUAKE FINDINGSBy: Lily Labovitz

TOP 10 PLACES Top 10 Countries/States: 1. North and South Korea- Korea is overdue for an earthquake, and it’s proximity to

Japan will probably cause small earthquakes. 2. California- The shaking of Japan was sent towards California, so I believe California

will experience earthquakes, also because they commonly have earthquakes often. 3. Japan – a large earthquake has just occurred here, so small aftershocks are likely to

occur. 4. Chile- About a year ago Chile had a massive earthquake, and I believe aftershocks will

soon occur in Chile, and countries around Chile. 5. Texas- Since Texas is close to South America, where many major earthquakes have

occurred recently, I believe as a result they may have some very small earthquakes. 6. China- China is in close proximity with Japan, and may have minor earthquakes as a

result, as aftershocks. 7. Jamaica- Jamaica had very bad earthquakes, but has not had any recently, and is

“Overdue”. 8. Australia- Australia is overdue for an earthquake, and rather close to the Eurasian

plate. I believe they may have a few small earthquakes as a result. 9. India – India is close to Japan, and may receive aftershocks. 10. Alaska- Alaska has had very large earthquakes in the past, but has not had any

recently. I believe they are overdue for an earthquake, and will have a major one soon.

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED ABOUT EARTHQUAKES AND EARTHQUAKE PREDICTION?

I have learned a lot about earthquakes and earthquake prediction. The first thing I learned about Earthquakes is that they are a release of energy from the earth- not just random movement. I also learned that most earthquakes occur around tectonic plates, not just in any area. I also learned that there are many types of boundaries, such as convergent and divergent.

WHERE ON EARTH DO MOST OF THE REALLY BIG EARTHQUAKES STRIKE?

Earthquakes are the movement the plates colliding and separating, most large earthquakes occur around the tectonic plates, and along fault lines. They can occur elsewhere, but the largest normally occur on, or very close to the tectonic plates.

WHAT FACTORS INFLUENCE EARTHQUAKE PREDICTION?

Probably the largest factor in earthquake prediction would be the tectonic plates. Since most earthquakes occur near or on the Tectonic plates, if I were trying to predict and earthquake, I would pinpoint areas near the tectonic plates and other fault lines. I would also see which areas have the most movement, and which areas were “overdue” for an earthquake. I would also check the areas near large earthquakes (7.0 to 10.0 magnitude) and find areas around there that have fault lines.
