This will be the most incredible location we have ever had! The juror, Emily Smith of the 1708 Gallery in Richmond, has completed her task and invited nearly 70 artists to the exhibition with one artwork apiece.

MORE Kudos!

Gina’s encaustic works, “Earth” and “Rising Fog” were accepted into the Academy Center for the Art’s 19th Annual National Juried Exhibition.

Gina will also be a featured artist in the June 2019 Encaustic Arts Magazine. The article is about her first experience in encaustic and the steps along the way. Her house series is highlighted.

Judy Bates will be included in the New River Biennial.

Robin Poteet’s painting titled “Remembering Carol” won an award at the 40th Annual Virginia Watercolor Society exhibition.

FUN ART FACT: At one time, the most expensive pigment was ultra-marine. It was made from a lapis lazuli, which

you might find in an ancient illuminated manuscript, which were created using paints made from a mixture of crushed precious stones and a binding agent.

Exhibition Opportunities

• 2019 Athenaeum Invitational

The Athenaeum Gallery 201 Prince Street Alexandria, VA 22314September 12-November 10, 2019 Entry deadline: August 1, 2019

This is a theme-based event featuring the works of both specially-invited artists who have exhibited in the Athenaeum Gallery in the past, as well as works selected through a call for submissions open to anyone living or working in VA/DC/MD/ WV. A $1500 prize for the best work will be awarded to an invited artist, a $1000 prize will be awarded to an artist from the open call, a $500 prize will be awarded based on core concept and game design, and a viewers' choice award of $500 will be determined by popular vote. Theme Board: out of our minds!

Artists and 'artists of the mind' from DC, MD, VA and WV are invited to explore the broad concept of board games. Entries might be based on a real or imagined game, an environment where games are played, or people's relationships to board games. Entries that demonstrate creative brilliance through the core concept and game design are encouraged as well as purely aesthetic works.

Consider games as a means of dealing with social issues or escaping reality; games as a resection of a labyrinth or as path to justice. A game might be way to explore the world or experience other cultures. Entries might be inspired by favorite childhood games or today’s issues such as climate change or political rancor.

Things To Remember When Applying For An Exhibition:

1. An Art Resume’/Vite’ -Your education/experience

2. Artist Statement- What about this body of work? Why?

3. Contact Info: Keep the contact info handy, dates and times, etc. Who will do what job?

4. Preview the Space/Location- How much space? How many pieces? How will they hang? etc.

5. Choosing the Work- Consider your audience, medium, subject matter, etc.

6. Finishing Touches-framing, hanging, hanging documents like title, artist info.

7. Photographs- document the works/

show. If sending images, make sure the required specs are met. Catalog the pieces with an inventory list.

8. The Hanging- How will they hang? Do you need fixtures, flats, etc. Who hangs?

9. Prepare YourSelf- Put your best outfit on and be ready to talk about your work. Be confident.

Composition Considerations-

• There should be a center of interest or focus in the work, to prevent it becoming a pattern in itself• The direction followed by the viewer's eye should lead the viewer's gaze around all elements in the

work before leading out of the picture• The subject should not be facing out of the image• Exact bisections of the picture space should be avoided• Small, high contrast, elements have as much impact as larger, duller elements• The prominent subject should be off-centre, unless a symmetrical or formal composition is desired, and

can be balanced by smaller satellite elements• The horizon line should not divide the art work in two equal parts but be positioned to emphasize

either the sky or ground; showing more sky if painting is of clouds, sun rise/set, and more ground if a landscape

• Use of detailed areas and 'rest' areas can help to aid the eye in where to look. Creating a contrast between detail and lack of detail is important

• These principles can be means of a good composition yet they cannot be applied separately but should act together to form a good composition.
