7th March, 2019 Message from the Principal Dear parents, staff and students, Student Arrival Time Students who arrive before 8.30am are asked to wait in the undercover area behind the staffroom. Students in this area are supervised from 8.15am and are dismissed by a member of Admin at 8.30am Students who arrive at school after 8.40am must report to the office and sign in prior to going to class. It is essential that students arrive to school on time as being late to class is disruptive for the student, the classroom teacher and the class. All classroom doors open at 8.30am and this is the recommended arrival time for students as it allows them sufficient time to organise themselves for the start of the day. Importance of Attending School Every Day Western Australian law stipulates that all school-aged children must attend school every day. Developing the habit of going to school every day is essential so children do not miss out on the important information and skills they need for their future learning. It is interesting to note that: Missing half a day of school each week equates to one month of missed learning each year The attendance habits set by children when they first start school continue throughout their school life If children miss half a day of school each week between Pre-primary and Year 10, they would miss almost one full year of learning Learning is cumulative - if children miss a day, it is harder for them to catch up. You can also help by making appointments for after school whenever possible and making holiday plans for during school holidays. If your child is unwell however, it is important that they stay home and rest to allow them the opportunity to recover and to ensure that conditions are not passed on to others. National Day Of Action Against Bullying The National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence will be held on Friday 16th March. This is an important event as it is a day where Australian schools stand united in declaring, Bullying! No Way. This day also highlights the everyday work of schools to counteract bullying and reinforces the message that bullying and violence at any time is not okay. To recognise this important day and message, students are encouraged to wear a white shirt (no offensive logos or statements) on the day. Harmony Day Harmony Week occurs in Week Seven this term. Teachers will be conducting activities in classrooms that cover the messages of Harmony Week. This is a time to celebrate Australian multiculturalism. As Australia is one of the most successful multicultural countries in the world, it is important that we celebrate this. Harmony day is about inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural or linguistic backgrounds, when we are all united by a set of core Australian values. To celebrate Harmony Week, an art display will be placed in the library and on Wednesday 27 th March, students will be invited to wear an orange shirt (no offensive logos or statements) or dress in a traditional costume from their heritage. Please note that this is not a free dress day. If your child does not have a traditional costume or an orange shirt to wear, they are required to attend in school uniform. Kiss and Drive Parents are reminded to refrain from parking in the “Kiss and Drive” area at the front of the school. This area is designed to keep traffic moving and if used properly, this becomes a very efficient and safe system. Your assistance is greatly appreciated. Staff Carpark Parents are advised that the staff carpark is not to be used as a drop-off or pickup point for their child nor is it to be used as a thoroughfare. The carpark can pose significant risks with vehicles reversing and moving in and out of this area. Please note that only parents who have a valid ACROD sticker are permitted to park in the disabled parking bays within the staff carpark. Playground Equipment Parents are reminded that the playground equipment throughout the whole school (including the Early Childhood playground) is out of bounds before and after school. Supervision is not provided on the play equipment at these times. Voluntary Contributions The payment of Voluntary Contributions plays a significant role in the school budget as it enables us to provide essential resources that support the learning experiences of all the students at our school. At this stage, 29% of all the students at our school have had their contribution paid. A sincere thank you to those parents who have made payment. Payments are still gratefully accepted and can be made at the office in cash, cheque, Eftpos or Direct Deposit to the school bank account. A draw will take place for all payments received by this Friday, 8th March. The lucky winner will receive $100 cash which has been kindly donated by our P&C. The winner will be announced at the assembly on Wednesday 13th March. Message from the Principal Dear parents, staff and students,

Student Arrival Time Students who arrive before 8.30am are asked to wait in the undercover area behind the staffroom. Students in this area are supervised from 8.15am and are dismissed by a member of Admin at 8.30am Students who arrive at school after 8.40am must report to the office and sign in prior to going to class.

It is interesting to note that:

Missing half a day of school each week equates to one month of missed learning each year

The attendance habits set by children when they first start school continue throughout their school life

If children miss half a day of school each week between Pre-primary and Year 10, they would miss almost one full year of learning

Learning is cumulative - if children miss a day, it is harder for them to catch up. You can also help by making appointments for after school whenever possible and making holiday plans for during school holidays. If your child is unwell however, it is important that they stay home and rest to allow them the opportunity to recover and to ensure that conditions are not passed on to others.

City of Swan Parking Initiative The aim of this initiative is to assist with the management of school parking and

promote safe parking practices. During Term 1 of the school year the City’s Community Safety Advocates will conduct patrols of parking areas surrounding schools and provide education advice to parents who are deemed to be committing a parking offence. Whilst the City aims to address these concerns without imposing penalties, once Term 2 commences, the education phase is deemed to be completed and enforcement patrols will commence. The Community Safety

Advocate team will undertake patrols of the area and issue enforcement notices to vehicles for offences committed.

What is Bullying? Bullying is an ongoing and deliberate misuse of power in relationships through repeated verbal, physical and/or social behaviour that intends to cause physical, social and/or psychological harm. It can involve an individual or a group misusing their power, or perceived power, over one or more persons who feel unable to stop it from happening. Bullying can happen in person or online, via various digital platforms and devices and it can be obvious (overt) or hidden (covert). Bullying behaviour is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time (for example, through sharing of digital records). Bullying of any form or for any reason can have immediate, medium and long-term effects on those involved, including bystand-ers. Single incidents and conflict or fights between equals, whether in person or online, are not defined as bullying.

Behaviours that do not constitute bullying include:

Mutual arguments and disagreements where there is no power imbalance Not liking someone or a single act of social rejection One-off acts of meanness or spite

Isolated incidents of aggression, intimidation or violence

However, these conflicts still need to be addressed and resolved.

Children can be reluctant to tell someone else about bullying, however it is essential that they tell someone (parent, teacher etc) so that issues can be investigated and resolved.

Encourage your child to talk about what happened. Tell your child that reporting the bullying is okay. Assure your child that it is NOT their fault.
