June 2017
Hello EIHQ Members, Every month I am amazed at the speakers who Kathy Robbie has been able to get for us. Did Ami just make you laugh and have fun that day? I have to say I had never met her before or really didn't know anything much about her. So I volunteered to pick her up at the airport and take her out to dinner. I went home and told my husband, "Oh I don't know how this meeting will go". He could tell I was concerned. Little did I know there was all that humor under the serious dinner conversations we were having. I loved everything I learned from her. I hope to do her binding technique soon. I should have realized when she ask me to hold a Quilt block up at the air-port that we were in for a good time… that was for sure. I am hoping we all have a good time in June at our laid back retreat day. Then we will be enter-tained by Patchy Fog in the evening. Please join the board and I with a line dance. It should be fun. You wanted us to think out of the box and you got it. Have a Great Day Sewing, Sue

Meet A Member
Shanna Cellman
Shanna was born in October of 1942 in a maternity home in St. Anthony, Idaho.
She was named after her grandmothers, Anna and Belle, which became Shanna Belle.
She was fortunate to grow up with her dad in the house, as he avoided WWII due to be-
ing deaf in one ear. During her early years, there was a shortage of many items which
were used for the war effort, including food, silk, and metals
In 1946, Shanna’s family, which included a brother and sister, moved to Clarke
County, Iowa. Two more sisters and one more brother then joined the family. She
quickly became an Iowan, and considers this one of the fortunate things to happen in her
life.
Shanna was one of the last people to graduate from nine years in a one-room country
school, but she is not a fan of that old schooling system. She then graduated from Osce-
ola High School, which is now called Clarke Community High School. She knew at a
young age that it was up to her to get a college education as a role model to her younger
siblings. She graduated from Northwest Missouri State University in 1965. She received
her Masters degree from the University of Iowa in Family and Consumer Sciences, with
a minor in Educational Technology in 1986.
After a five year courtship with Terry Cellman, they married and had two daughters.
Erin is a PT managing St. Lukes outpatient care, and Demeri is vice president of
Northland College in northeast Wisconsin. The two girls have given Shanna and Terry
five grandchildren. In Shanna’s career, she taught 7-12th grade home economics for five
years at Highland Jr. and Sr. High. Then she took a job with the Iowa State University
Extension for twenty-two years, finishing as a Family Resource Manager to eleven coun-
ties.
Upon retirement, Shanna and Terry moved from Ainsworth to the northern edge of
Cedar Rapids where they built a new house. She spends a lot of her time reading and
quilting. She has been a member of our guild for eight years. She has served as several
committee chairs and took the lead on our flag repair project for Cedar Memorial.

SOS : Sharing Our Skills
My gracious, did you all accept the President's challenge! We have already sewn a number of tops, and will be doing so again at the June meeting, for those of you who have chosen to bring your sewing machines. Becky McCarville accepted the task of combining the blocks, cutting the sashing, etc, making up kits, with directions, from all the gorgeous gener-ous blocks you all have contributed. This certainly has been a great project for SOS, and the recipients of the resulting quilts!!!! SOS Wednesday, as always, is the third Wednesday of the month—June 21, from 9:30 to 3:30, at the Knights of Columbus, 1620 E Ave NE. We tie, sew and nosh on a 4 star potluck! Come for the day, or any part thereof, any time you can help is appreciated. In May, SOS received 14 tops, 15 pillowcases, 1 doll quilt, 14 finished quilts and got 12 quilts tied. Thanks ever so much for all that you do! Mary Burgess, Diane Eimen and Suzanne Mullins

QOV: Quilts of Valor
Freedom Stitchers of Iowa
Hello everyone – from Colorado Springs! Just finished up our Annual Quilts of Valor Confer-
ence --- and tomorrow morning am headed up Pikes Peak on the Cog Railway --- then to Den-
ver to catch Amtrak and overnight to Mt. Pleasant. Had a super time ---- but probably the
BEST time was watching a QOV awarded to a 96-year-old Woman Pilot!!!! She was/is a spunky
lady!! She actually flew training missions where she was the target with a big target painted
on the side of her plane right behind the cockpit. Other pilots shot at her for training!!! She
was, and still is, a very foxy lady. She was a major inspiration when she was all wrapped up in
her quilt and she proudly proclaimed that she considered her military service … “not as a sac-
rifice, but as an investment in herself and her country!” ……. Stuff like that is just so hum-
bling to hear! It is very inspiring to want to keep up the drive for more quilts to honor our
Veterans! The mission is very rewarding on many many levels. Come and join us!
I’m coming home with some new panels, some wonderful tips for Flying Geese from
Tony Jacobson (in person), and some new patterns. …… All that between visiting the Zoo
(didn’t find any relatives), and the Olympic Training Center.
Freedom Stitchers will be meeting on Thursday 22nd before the June guild meeting.
We will have an all-day Open House at my house. Please call – please join us – please make a
quilt for a Veteran. We have about 80 recipients waiting for quilts in the next few months –
and the list continues to grow daily. Any questions? Just ask a Freedom Stitchers of Iowa
member (or me). We’d love to have you. We have a Presentation planned just before the 4th
of July --- come and see the joy that these simple quilts bring to our Vets. It is one way we
can thank them for the freedoms we enjoy today.
Did you see the article in the Gazette with our own Karen Kruse?? It was in the
Community Section printed on Memorial Day. Excellent FULL-PAGE article. I bet it is still on
the Gazette website – just search for Quilts of Valor!
See you soon!

Our Next Quilt Show Has Been Scheduled!
We got the dates for our next quilt show. It will be held September 19th to the 21, 2019. The days are Thursday, Friday and Saturday. A huge thank you to Diana for being on it and sticking out the long wait. This has been a tough time for everyone. Now the fun begins and the filling of the committees. I know we will all take a part of the puzzle and support our leader, Debbie Wordehoff.
EIHQ members: This notice is just to let you know what all your membership money goes for. We have some fixed expenses and some that are estimated in our budget. It might amaze some what is takes to run this guild. Both past and present boards take this very seriously. We have had our member-ship at $30.00 a year for many years. Now we have several items that have gone up over the years and membership has stayed the same. This is one reason our show has to be successful, and other fund raising does too, to allow us to get the speakers we are able to get. I do hope I didn't leave too many things out that pop up from time to time. Fixed Expenses Storage Unit $169.00 per month = $2,028.00 PER YEAR American Legion $200.00 per month = $2,200.00 PER YEAR KC Hall for SOS $50.00 per month = $600.00 PER YEAR Insurance $548.00 PER YEAR Website $300.00 PER YEAR Total $5,676.00 PER YEAR Estimated Budget Programs..............$6,500.00 Library..................$90.00 SOS.....................$700.00 Membership..............$550.00 Publicity...............$150.00 Newsletter..............$700.00 Historian...............$100.00 President...............$200.00 TOTAL.................$8,990.00 Now take for easy math 300 x $30.00 = $9,000.00 We are at 304 Members at this time. -- Sincerely, Suzanne Halley, President

Lynne Hagmeier, Kansas Troubles

6:30 pm Lecture: Moda and Beyond
Lynne began quilting more than 20 years ago after taking a class at her local quilt
shop, The Quilting Bee in Salina, Kansas. Kansas Troubles Quilters was born the
next
8
year when she and two friends collaborated to make and sell small quilts at craft fairs. Af-
ter a few years, Lynne and one of the other women decided to publish their original pat-
terns and attended their first wholesale market. In 2000, Lynne took the next step and
partnered with Moda Fabrics to design fabric collections based on her signature warm,
country colors and nature-inspired motifs. For seven years, Lynne and her husband,
Robert, shared their passion for quilting by hosting retreats at KTQ’s home base in Ben-
nington, Kansas. Now she’s traveling to quilt shops and guilds teaching classes and shar-
ing her quilts and their stories with quilters all over the country. Lynne has designed and
written a series of six Quilter’s Journal quilt patterns based on historical events, more
than two dozen books and 75 patterns, and 30 fabric collections to date. Lynne is the au-
thor of Piecing the Past: Vintage Quilts Recreated by Kansas Troubles and Border Gar-
den: Kansas Troubles Favorites Projects for Your Home.

you must let Kathy Robbie know by June 26. Quilt will be at the May meeting.

9:00 am and 6:30 pm
I love quilting and especially making miniatures and small block quilts. In addition, I love
making the same block over and over again. I know, crazy, huh? And the scrappier, the
better. I have been quilting since 1999. Around that time, Jo Morton was a speaker at
the guild. She agreed to spend the night with a guild member and that ended up being my
mom. Of course, I loved all of her work but wasn't really into quilting yet. That didn't
stop me from going over to my mom's for the opportunity to meet Jo. As it turned out, Jo
gave both my mom and me a trunk show right there in my mom's living room. That was
all I needed to learn to quilt.
9
And honestly, what was I waiting on? Both my mom and my sister quilt. I had teachers right
there at my disposal. Within the year, I was headed to Paducah, building my stash, and start-
ing way more projects than I could possibly complete. I was hooked. I look forward to sharing
my journey with you during the August meeting and with those of you who choose to take my
class, "Miniatures and Small Block Quilts."
