As winter arrives, you may be dreading the colds, flu, and general icky-ness, that seems to accompany it. Here are six tips to help you and your children stay healthy this winter.

Wash Your Hands It’s estimated that children with proper hygiene miss 2 days of school each year, while children who do not practice proper hygiene miss 3 days a year. Teach your children to wash their hands well, and often. This includes before and after meals, after coughing or sneezing, after using the restroom, and when they come home from school. You can also use alcohol-based wipes or gels when a water source is not readily available.

Keep Warm Make sure you and your children are dressed appropriately for the colder weather. Jackets, gloves, and hats are all important clothing pieces to protect against the elements and keep your body in tip top shape.

6 Ways to Keep Your Kids Healthy this Winter

Eat Well Make sure your children get well-balanced meals. Give your family the vitamins and minerals they need, so their bodies have the energy to stay healthy.

SleepSleep is one of the most important things we can do to give our body a leg up against sickness this winter. Each member of your family should get at least 7 hours of restful sleep each night, more for your younger children (10-13 hours).

Food SafetyAs you prepare your holiday meals, wash your hands often when handling food. Keep any raw meats, poultry, and eggs away from food that is ready to eat or already prepared. Invest in a quality food thermometer to check the temperature of all of your cooked meals, make sure they are at least at the proper eating temperature. Do not use the same knives, cutting boards, or utensils to prepare raw foods and ready-to-eat foods.

QuarantineIf you still get sick after taking precautions, quarantine the family members. Do not allow your children to return to school until they are 24-hours free of fevers or vomiting. Wipe all surfaces with disinfectant, as well as washing clothing and bedding in hot, soapy water. Consider getting your children a flu shot this year to give you a leg up against sickness.

Using a few pieces of 10 x 44mm PAR pine that you can buy, you can make up your own crates for this project - and make them so that they don’t need to be cut in half or you can buy ready made crates at Spiro’s Mica.

Paint the crates with two coats of water-based enamel. Note: Although this is mentioned at the beginning of the project, I would leave the painting until the end if you are going to cut ready-made crates in half.

Just below any handle holes - if there are any - attach two keyhole brackets. Note: Use a pencil to mark the hole for the bracket, use an 8mm wood bit to drill out and then screw the bracket in place.

Bridge Building Competition – 2014

Achievement in Cycling

All the branches of the South African Institute of Civil Engineering hold Bridge Building Competitions on a regional level in April each year. The winners of the regional competitions are flown to Gauteng in August where they are hosted by St Alban’s College in Pretoria in an International Bridge Building Competition. Pre-weighed kits that consist of twelve 900mm x 5mm wooden dowels as well as a packet of epoxy adhesive are handed out to participating schools. A set of rules and a few explanatory notes accompany these kits. Participating teams that consist of three members then have to design, plan and build a bridge which has to be submitted on the day of the competition where they are scrutinized and declared admissible for the competition.

The 2014 SAICE Bridge Building competition was held on Saturday, 12 April at Port Rex Technical High School. Our team, which consisted of Stefan Stander, Jaco Van Heerden and Edna Stander (Stefan’s sister from Stirling High School), designed a bridge and tested the prototypes in the Civil workshop. These tests were most disappointing, the highest destructive force being 21

All the teams are taken by bus to Monte Casino and treated to a wonderful evening. The Water Distribution Competition was designed by a Senior Lecturer at the University of Cape Town as a project for his third year Civil Engineering students. Dr Van Zyl has taken this board game to universities around the world and they are keen to participate in such an international competition. The possibility exists that the winning team at national level could represent the RSA at a competition in a foreign country. The aim of this game is to distribute three litres of water equally to three separate points on a sixteen-point grid. An elevated bucket represents a reservoir filled with water. A number of 6mm and 3mm pipes as well as a number of T-pieces, elbow joints, adaptor pieces, cross-pieces and blanking-off pieces are allocated to each board. Teams are given one hour to design a network to distribute the three litres of water into the three given points on the board. Teams are allowed two test-runs. Once they are happy that they have all the air bubbles (which should be called Murphy bubbles) purged from the network and they are confident that there will be an equal volume of water distributed to the three points, a judge is called, the clamp is removed from the

kilograms. Stefan promised though, that they would build a winning bridge after listening to some critical assessment of where they went wrong. The bridge from Hoërskool Grens looked very impressive and everyone was disappointed when it destructed at a paltry 35 kilograms. Port Rex Technical High School’s bridge was the last to be tested and although we only had to beat 35 kg, our team was very nervous as one of the team members had to stand in the front of the hall and explain why they had chosen to build a bridge on that particular model. Stefan chose to load the bridge himself and pushed, plucked, slid, nudged and aligned the bridge to his satisfaction. He stepped away and the judge started the turning of the winch. A student from WSU had the microphone and started commentating. The atmosphere was electric. The scale passed the 35 kg and went on beyond 50 kg until eventually the bridge destructed at 75 kilograms. Port Rex Technical High School’s team thus won the competition handsomely. The team would like to thank Mrs van der Vyver and Mr Fairlamb for their support, Lloyd Slatem and Sean Howlett as well as all the unseen people that contributed to the success of the day.

Scoring is very simple. A penalty point is awarded for each millilitre, over or under one litre in the bucket. They remained calm (very important) and purged their system of all air bubbles carefully. After two good runs they called a judge and stood back and watched with baited breath. The little jets of water running into their small containers initially looked very impressive, but after a while it became evident that one of the containers was receiving less water than the other two. What they didn’t realise was that the container with the least water in it actually had exactly one litre of water in it. The other two were deceiving. When the three totals were added together, we had 40 penalty points more than Hoërskool Grens. Port Rex Technical High School was thus placed second in the competition. The team would like to thank Mr Piderit for assisting with the preparation of the hall as well as the support during the day. A special word of thanks also to Mrs van der Vyver and Mr Fairlamb for their support, Lloyd Slatem and Sean Howlett as well as all the unseen people that contributed to the success of the day.

On Thursday, 20 March 2014, Beaconhurst School celebrated its annual Founders Day. The day was marked with an assembly where the entire school was gathered in the hall. We had various speakers present, including two of our past pupils, Miss Angela Smith, and Mr Christo Claassens. The loyalty students are students who have been at beaconhurst from grade 1 to matric (gr 12). These students were also acknolowed and thanked for their loyality at this assembly. It was a great day for the learners and teachers.

Daneal Steyn our 1st team rugby coach has been selected to be the head coach of the U18 Border 7’s side. Congratulations!

The Matrics were transported to Venice for their final dance. As usual an array of transport was used to deliver the couples to the hall. There were the more traditional modern and vintage cars, but in addition, a few couples broke the mould and arrived in true Lilyfontein style; one gentleman pushed his date in a wheelbarrow, another couple arrived in a sail boat and yet another was escorted by Star Wars storm troopers!

It’s not often that an English Literature book can be brought to life in the same way as it was for the Grade 11’s on their trip to Nieu Bethesda. They were able to meet friends of Helen Martins, a character in the Athol Fugard play “The Road to Mecca”, which they are studying. This information enables them to understand the difference between the character depicted by the playwright and the “real” Helen. They also enjoyed walking through her home ‘The Owl House’ and seeing for themselves the

“Die kunste kom by mekaar” was the motto of a group of Beaconhurst learners who attended the KKNK in Oudtshoorn during the last school holidays. They arrived at school very early in the morning, but were excited to get on the road. The journey was long, but worthwhile as they thoroughly enjoyed the trip. They were exposed to the exciting Afrikaans culture and language and also did some shopping at stalls. They also attended informative concerts, plays and workshops, including a performance by Kurt Darren.

During the year, Beaconhurst School takes one month and dedicates it to donating blood. We encouraged the parents of the learners to try and donate as many units of blood as they can as part of this venture. The SANBS then visits the school to tell the learners about the importance of donating blood and the learners who manage to bring in the most units of blood get rewarded for their efforts. The Beaconhurst High School learners participated in the Bridge Building events

hosted by Port Rex High School. This was a fun event for all the learners and educators involved.

Loyalty learners, who attended Beaconhurst School since grade 1, are getting awarded for their consistent dedication to the school.

A visit to the Karoo wouldn’t be complete without taking advantage of the opportunity to see the unique rock strata, water transfer schemes and ground water systems. In addition, the learners were lectured by prominent famers on alternative farming methods used in the Karoo, were given an insight into the dangers of fracking to the ground water in the Karoo and saw fossils of creatures that lived in this area centuries ago at the Ganora fossil museum.

Cultural AcademicThe School had their two Open Days for the 2015 intake of new Grade 8 potential pupils. The Principal, Mr Hewett and Deputy, Mr Alers gave talks about what Hudson Park has to offer potential pupils regarding the four spheres, namely Academic, Cultural, Pastoral and Physical. The evenings were well attended and the school tours to certain facilities and science labs certainly made an impact on both pupils and parents alike. The different sporting codes which visited Kingswood College on 9 and 10 May showed a lot of camaraderie on the field. Our 1st XV lost by a mere 1 point in a game where there unfortunately has to be a winner and a loser. Both teams played their hearts out until the whistle blew. The 2nds also came undone in the end losing by 2 points. For the rest of the teams it was hard fought rugby and some skilful hockey that was played that made the outing to Grahamstown a memorable event.

Red, Half Colours, Colours and Honours Awards are made to pupils in recognition of service involvement and this year Emma Botha, Sarah Selkirk and Sibulele Ngwana received Honours for Service to the school.

The Hudson Park High School musical production, Godspell, has received rave reviews and Mr. Pierre Perold’s personal attention to detail and love for the arts has once again shown why he is a multi-award-winning director in the Eastern Cape.

Lulutho Ngcongolo (was the lead in Godspell) came 1st in the World Public Speaking persuasive speech competition in Lithuania last week.

He is also an excellent flautist and outstanding member of our Jazz Voices.

Academic Honours were given to Anri van Onselen and she received her Cum Laude Blazer at the recently held Awards Assembly. Kate Anderson was also honoured for her Academic contribution to the School.

The Clarendon hockey girls finished top of their pool which set up a semi final match against Eunice. They lost 2-0 and then had to play Paarl for 3rd/4th position. The girls ended 4th out of 18 schools having lost to Paarl 1-0 in their final play-off game.

Clarendon has a very young team this year, and attending the All Girls Festival was an experience for the Netball team.

SA Rowing

Carrie Anne Warner who is rowing for the South African development team in Belgium. Carrie came 11th out of 44 for her Skull event, she finished as the best South African representative. She also received a Bronze medal for her 8 with other South African team members.

This year 52 girls and 11 staff members travelled to Port Elizabeth on the 26th – 29th April to attend the 14th National All Girls Sport and Cultural Festival. This is an annual event and the biggest sporting event in the country with approximately 1000 participates. The sport and

cultural festival is a fantastic opportunity to gather girls from all over the country.SquashThe first team Squash girls played 6 games in their pool:

Won 4Lost 1Drew 1

They continue to come first in their pool and proceeded to play in the Final against Collegiate. They unfortunately lost in the final and were placed 2nd overall.

TennisOur very young tennis team did exceptionally well this year, with three Grade 10’s and one Grade 11.

They played exceptional Tennis and came 2nd out of 12 teams.

They narrowly lost to Oranje Hoer Mesieiskool in the final.

ChessThe 1st team chess were ranked 8th in the competition and managed to

end 6th overall. This is a remarkable achievement as we had three junior chess players and one senior in our first team.

DebatingThe debaters ended 4th overall.

Public SpeakingThe girls came 1st in Prepared

Speech and 2nd in Impromtu Speech. Saphila Zifo was awarded Top Individual Speaker of the festival.

Drama and Visual ArtsThe drama and visual arts sections were both based on a workshops this year .It was purely based on a learning experience.
