The Indo-Pakistan war of 1971 which began onDecember 3 lasted for 13 days and officially endedon December 16, after which Pakistan surrenderedto India. It was on this day in 1971, that the chief ofthe Pakistani forces, General AA Khan Niazi, alongwith 93 thousand troops, surrendered unconditionallyto the allied forces consisting of Indian Army andMukti Bahini.

The end of the war also resulted in subsequentsecession of East Pakistan into Bangladesh. India andBangladesh, since then, celebrate Vijay Diwas, alsoknown as Victory day, every year to mark both thecountries’ military victory over Pakistan.

The war's end also resulted in the unilateral,unconditional surrender of the Pakistan Army andsubsequent secession of East Pakistan into Bangladesh.

On 16 December every year, Citizens, senior officials, students &war veterans lay wreaths and remember the sacrifices of thesoldiers. The anniversary of Vijay Divas is observed acrossIndia by paying tributes to the Indian martyrs who laid downtheir lives for liberating Bangladesh from Pakistan.
