Health care is killingseniors, single parentsand minimum-wageearners. My stress is high, but I discovered that myplight is not half of whatothers endure.

One woman I knowowes more than $20,000 ascopay to a hospital. She ison fixed income and willnever be able to pay it all.Collectors call her, andshe lives in fear of the nexttime she gets sick.Another friend needs newdentures, but the cost is sooutrageous she will dowithout. Almost every se-nior has a horror story totell about health care.

I have a power chairand it needs to be re-paired. It took a month toget approval from my pro-vider and the cost to mewould be $500. I neverpaid a copay for my chairbefore. My insurancewent up this year bynearly $80. I pay morethan a third of mymonthly income to insur-ance and a third for myrent. That leaves me lessthan a third for every-thing else, including co-pays, utilities and food.

Everything has a co-pay: doctors visits, bloodwork, etc. My dentistwanted $350 and refusedto allow me to pay $10 amonth. My physical ther-apy copay is $30 a sessionand I need 12 sessions. Now I need a dental crownfor $1,500. Apparentlysuch crowns belongonly to rich people in theUnited States, but in Can-ada and the U.K. poor peo-ple can have crowns, too.In fact, in most stablecountries, this is not an is-sue.

Here we have pharma-ceutical companies thatuse tax dollars to developproducts then gouge thetaxpayers so they cannotafford the medicine. Herewe have executives whomake thousands of per-cent more than theirworkers. Here we havegovernment officials whowould rather fight thandeal with the nationsbusiness.

Much of this is becausewe have people who dontvote, or who vote for sin-gle-issue candidates. Some believe the propa-ganda they are fed anddont even know if theirnewspaper presents a lib-eral or conservative pointof view. If you mentionScandinavian health care, they scream that thosepeople pay 50 percent oftheir salaries in taxes. Butbetween taxes, medical in-surance, copays, prescrip-tions, etc., I pay 65 percentand get far less. Manipula-tion by fallacy is one of thegreatest tools in the politi-cal bag of tricks.

Among its limitless uses,

pi is used to calculate thearcs on which planes flygreat distances so as togauge fuel use.

It is also used in astron-omy to calculate orbits andsizes of celestial bodies, andin engineering to control

moving parts. As we could not resist the

opportunity to toast a fortu-itous coincidence on our cal-endars, here are someMarch 14 celebrations forSuper Pi Day 2015.

From 1 to 3 p.m. Saturdayat Scott Township Public Li-brary, 301 Lindsay Road, afree slice of donated piesfrom Eat'n Park and the PiePlace, or patrons' homemadepies, will be available.

Library director GinaLeone said the day justneeded to be celebrated andexplained: She has handoutsthat explain pi and its math-ematical significance.

I hope people come inand talk about what theywould like to see at the li-brary, and maybe talk a littlepi, Ms. Leone said.

Library adult program-mer Adrianne Krings notedthat I'm always encourag-ing mathematics in allages.

From 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.Saturday, or after hours, cel-ebrants are encouraged tobring a homemade pie to Se-wickley Public Library, 500Thorn St., for its fifth annualpie baking contest. Every-one is invited.

A panel of judges will se-lect the winner. Slices of thehomemade pies will be soldfor $2, with all proceeds ben-efiting the library.

People like baking pies, and Pi Day is a perfect day todo it every year, communi-cations librarian MeghanSnatchko said.

At Carnegie ScienceCenter on the North Side,

program coordinator BradPeroney said observing Su-per Pi Day was a no-brainer. Not only does thisdate occur once every hun-dred years, this year on aSaturday, but the citys St.Patrick's Day Parade will beheld that day.

After the parade, a lot ofpeople will bring their kidsto the Science Center, hesaid. Its a perfect day to cel-ebrate pi, he said.

Scheduled events for 10a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday in-clude tossing a pizza pi asa way to learn how pi isused to measure circles, andplaying the digits of pi asmusical notes on a giantfloor piano.

Its a physical way toshow how pi goes on and onwithout repeating as you

can hear that the notes donot repeat, Mr. Peroneysaid.

Attendees can also playPi Spy by searching thefirst two billion digits of thenumber to look for digits oftheir birthday, phone num-ber, or any other number.

Toothpicks and a gameboard will be used to explainhow to estimate pi.

Pi Day is about makingpeople aware of how mathe-matics can be used in every-day lives, Mr. Peroney said. It's also a great way to getthem hooked on math.

Registration for the pie-baking contest in Sewickleyis required: 412-741-6920.

¾¿ ÿÄ ÉÁGetting students to do

homework can be a chal-lenge for parents.

Norwins Hillcrest Inter-mediate School Family Re-source Center offers parentsand students help with thatand other challenges.

Maggie Zimmer, districtdirector of special educationand student services, pur-sued the $30,000 grant fromPennsylvania Departmentof Education that paid forthe center.

Parenting is not easy, she said last week. I thinkanybody whos ever been aparent knows that.

The center, which is newthis year, opened Aug. 7 atthe elementary school.

I am impressed by howour team transformed a for-mer storage room into amodern, inviting facilitywith technology and anabundance of support ma-terials, Norwin superinten-

dent William Kerr said.I firmly believe that

when families, schools andcommunities work together, children succeed.

According to a districtnews release, a team of ad-ministrators and teachersoversees the Family Re-source Center, includingHillcrest guidance counselorBob Conrad, Ms. Zimmer, principal Brian ONeil, as-sistant principal Lisa Bana-sick, teachers Scott Patrickand Amy Hudson, and spe-cial education teacherRachel Grissom.

They work collabora-tively with the HillcrestSchool-Wide Positive Behav-ioral Support Team.

Ms. Zimmer said sheand others involved withthe center bought a lot ofbooks and DVDs that pro-vide helpful hints for han-dling parenting issues, from how to help a griev-ing child to setting upmorning and evening rou-

tines that promote studentachievement.

The center also offershelpful information abouthow to create a successfulblended family.

Parents can make ap-pointments to use the centerduring school hours or afterschool, she said, by callingMr. Conrad at 724-861-3015,ext. 1509.

Then, a guidance coun-selor or teacher can do afamily checkup with theparent and student to iden-tify each familys strengthsas well as problem areaswith a short questionnaire,Mr. Conrad said.

The evaluation can helpdiscover anything the stu-dent is worrying about thatmight be affecting his or hergrades, from grieving to peerissues such as bullying, hesaid.

When schools and fami-lies effectively engage andcollaborate, it makes a hugedifference in the success and

well-being of students, Ms.Zimmer wrote in the newsrelease.

Thirty years of researchproves that the difference isthat students enroll in morechallenging academic pro-grams, improve their aca-demic outcomes, pass moreclasses, have better atten-dance and improve their so-cial skills.

Mr. Conrad said parentscan also learn how to use thedistricts Skyward systemon a screen in the resourcecenter.

Some of the centers par-enting videos are alsoposted online so parents canaccess them at the centersWeb page at www.nor-winsd.org, including one onsupporting respectful be-havior, and brochures oncommunication, encour-agement and limit setting.
