    The East Sussex Academy of Music (ESAM) is a unique place. Join us, and weguarantee you will be excited and challenged by the experience.

    In this brochure youll find out more about the excellent facilities on offer, what you will

    study, and the range of ensembles you can join and the success of our students.Theres nowhere in the whole of Sussex offering our level of performance opportunities,and we have an enviable 100% pass rate in Music.

    But on top of all this, youll find here an atmosphere of camaraderie and peer supportyou get from the kind of large-scale and small group music making that goes on atESAM.

    Who chooses to come to ESAM?

    x Students looking to take music making to

    the highest level we are the only institute

    in Sussex offering a Pre-Professional

    Diploma in musical performance as an

    add-on module to Music A level.

    Music A levelAS in year, AS and A in years Examining board: Edexcel

    There are three areas of study:

    Solo recital although only one solo recital is required for the exam, at ESAM you will perform four recitals per

    year, which gives you more experience and the opportunity to produce your best possible performance.

    Understanding music you will study a range of set works that are certain to expand your musical horizons.Classroom listening, learning and writ ten work is enhanced by trips to hear professional performances.

    Composition/Harmony AS students have their compositions performed and recorded by professionalmusicians. A students study (alongside composition) traditional harmony the skill at the heart of all fine

    composition.

    In addition to the coursework, ongoing instrumental/vocal tuition is essential and is available throughour team of academy teachers. All students are required to take part in Academy Choir.

    Pre-Professional Diploma in Music Performance(NOCN Level Diploma)

    This is a fantastic opportunity for musicians hoping to go on to study at conservatoire, or to developtheir performance skills to a higher level.

    Students are tutored in small ensembles (for example string quartet, vocal trio or rock group) by teachers

    who are themselves professional performers. The student ensembles give three concerts per year.

    This course is taught on one timetabled lesson per week, so it will not clash with other subjects ortake the place of a full A level.

    Please note: the Pre-Professional Diploma in Music Performance (Pre-Pro) is offered as a specialistaddition to Music A level it is not a standalone qualification.

    EnsemblesThe ensembles are at the core of what makes ESAM so special. Ensemble simply means together and thats

    what you will do: make music together with others just like you. If your experience of playing or singing in groupsis limited, or if youre not sure its your thing, dont worry youll find out just how much fun it can be!

    All practice sessions take place on Wednesday afternoons, and there are concerts three times a yearinvolving all the ensembles.

    Academy Choir All students sing with Academy Choir, which can mean seventy singers or more!Directed by John Hancorn.

    Academy Orchestra Symphony orchestra directed by Nick Houghton. All instrumental students areexpected to audition for the Orchestra.

    Academy Wind Band the loudest sound at the Academy! Directed by John Evans. All wind and brassinstrumental students play in Wind Band.

    Academy Voices a small choir for serious singers. Academy Voices sing at Chichester Cathedral each year.All voice students are expected to sing in Academy Voices. Directed by John Hancorn.

    Music Technology A levelAS in year, AS and A in years Examining board: Edexcel

    Music Technology at ESAM is taught on classroom computers using the software Cubase. We also have tworecording studios here at the Performing Arts Centre on the Lewes Campus of Sussex Downs College, the EastSussex Academy of Musics flagship building which was officially opened in 2004. Music technology studentsreceive mentoring from professionals currently working in the industry. The course will teach you to sequenceMIDI and audio, record live instruments and produce CDs, and compose and arrange using computer software.

    BTEC Level Diploma ( year)The BTEC course gives students the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and understanding of how, in themusic industry, musicians are constantly working towards a final product or a showcase of their work bypreparing, planning and creating a finished CD recording and/or live concert.

    The course focuses on Popular/Contemporary music, with:

    Practical composition and performance Recording and use of musical technology Planning and creating a musical product Working as a musical ensemble

    BTEC Level Subsidiary Diploma ( years)The BTEC level course gives students the key knowledge and practical skills needed for their potential chosencareer as a freelance musician.

    With lessons per week ( hrs tuition) over years students study subject areas:

    Arranging Music Live Music workshop Music and Sound for the Moving Image Contemporary Song-writing Techniques The Music Freelance World

    Special subject investigationQualifications for either BTEC courseStudents need to be keen pop musicians, and able to either play an instrument or sing. An ability to readtraditional score and an understanding of music technology is an advantage but not a necessity.Level students would also have either a GCSE in Music or a BTEC level qualification.

    Academy StaffNicholas Houghton BA (Hons), PGCE, FRCO isthe Head of the East Sussex Academy of Music,

    having begun his music career as a chorister

    at Coventry Cathedral. Nick is an organist,

    pianist and choral conductor and works as a

    professional continuo player and accompanist.

    He is also an A level examiner for Edexcel.

    John Evans M.Mus, BA (Hons), ARCM (DipPG) isthe Academys Lecturer in Composition. He is an

    award-winning composer, arranger and guitarist.John has written for the BBC and Channel TV

    shows as well as arranging for Sinead OConnor

    amongst others. As a guitarist, he regularly plays

    in West End Shows and as a session musician.

    Stuart Wagstaff BMus (Hons) is Lecturer in MusicTechnology and a tutor on the Pre-Professional

    Diploma. He gained his degree in Popular Music

    performance at the London College of Music, and

    has been playing Rock, Jazz and Pop bass forabout years in various bands.

    John Hancorn GTCL, LTCL, ESAMs ChoralDirector, studied at Trinity College of Music and

    has a well established career as a professionalsinger, having extensive performing and

    recording experience in the field of opera,

    oratorio and consort singing. John is active

    locally as Music Director of the East Sussex Bach

    Choir and the Sussex Baroque players.

    Rachel Fryer M.Mus, BA (Hons) PGCE is ESAMsHead of Piano and is active both as a soloist and

    accompanist. Rachel performed extensively for

    the late Sir Yehudi Menuhins Live Music Now!

    organisation, and has worked as tutor and coach

    on the National Young Pianists Course, for the

    National Youth Orchestra and on many summer

    music courses.

    What next after ESAM?Music is a well respected A level

    qualification. Most of our students progress

    onto University to study not only Music but

    a range of subjects including in recent years

    Medicine, Law, English, History and Maths.

    Many Pre-Professional Diploma students gain

    places on the most highly-rated university

    degree courses for Music such as Cambridge,

    Kings College London and Nottingham, as

    well as prestigious conservatoires such as

    the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal

    College of Music.

    In addition, a number of our students have

    gained places on pop music degree courses

    at Brighton Institute of Modern Music and

    Leeds College of Music.
