THE COLLECT O God, whose Son Jesus is the good shepherd of your people: Grant that when we hear His voice we may know Him who calls us each by name, and follow where He leads: who, with you and the Holy Spirit, lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE LESSON

A Reading from the Word of God written in the Acts of the Apostles Chapter 4 beginning at the 1st verse Now the company of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one said that any of the things which he possessed was his own, but they had everything in common. And with great power the apostles gave their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all. There was not a needy person among them, for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the proceeds of what was sold and laid it at the apostles' feet; and distribution was made to each as any had need. Thus Joseph who was surnamed by the apostles Barnabas (which means, Son of encouragement), a Levite, a native of Cyprus, sold a field which belonged to him, and brought the money and laid it at the apostles' feet. Glory to Christ our Saviour.

I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. He who is a hireling and not a shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf snatches them and scatters them.He flees because he is a hireling and cares nothing for the sheep. I am the good shepherd; I know my own and my own know me, as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep. And I have other sheep, that are not of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will heed my voice. So there shall be one flock, one shepherd.

From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings:

This fourth Sunday of Easter is often called ‘Good Shepherd Sunday’. The reading from the Gospel of St John chapter 10 is always featured in the liturgy for this day.

The author of the Gospel according to St. John recalls for us God’s loving care for all people and demonstrates this in the way in which Jesus has gathered all humanity to be one flock, one sheepfold.

Chapter 10 of St. John’s Gospel reminds us that our Saviour is the awesome and unique shepherd who lays down his life for the entire world and wants us to keep on growing in his grace.

The Book of Common Prayer (CPWI) makes the connection between Easter faith and the Good shepherd image in the words of blessing, viz:-

The God of peace, who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that Great Shepherd of the sheep, make you perfect in every good work to do his will; and the blessing … (BCP page 150)

There was a time in our Diocese when, on the Sunday in which the Good Shepherd Gospel was read, students of Codrington College were given the opportunity to address various congregations so as to give enlightenment regarding studying at the college and to encourage vocations to the sacred ministry.

Indeed in some dioceses today is also known as Vocation Sunday, when persons are asked to pray

for and to consider that God almighty may be calling them to serve the church as priests.

Over the past twenty to twenty five years we really have not seen an abundance of young people offering themselves for the sacred ministry. Our entire society, if not the entire world, is oriented differently, so that vocations across the world in the major historic churches have fallen off drastically.

The average candidate for ordination is either a middle aged person who is seeking a second career or an individual, who having put in the required number of years has retired from their workplace and after a brief period of structured reading, is ordained.

Such persons bring tremendous experience and wisdom to the church and their contribution is highly valued; however we are always seeking out young vocations in this ministry so as to ensure a good future for the preaching of the Word and the administration of the Sacrament.

In the midst of the changes in society, let us remember that God continues call his intelligent and talented young people to serve him as priests.

Let us pray for an increase in vocations to the sacred ministry and that parents , guardians and members of the various congregations would encourage and support young people who feel called to the ordained ministry of the church.
