CATHOLIC CHURCH AND SCHOOL Saint Pius X parish: www.spxcc.org school: www.stpiusxschoolcc.org Welcome to St. Pius X Parish April 5, 2015 Easter Sunday “To renew all things in Christ” Dear Friends, The Lord is Risen! He is Risen indeed! For the last several weeks we have been traveling the path of penance and self-denial. Ash Wednesday seems like it was just yesterday. Many of us chose to forego some of our favorite snacks, foods, and drinks over the course of that time. Many decided to spend a little extra time in prayer or reading scripture. A good number elected to add daily Mass attendance to our routine. Quite a few of us made the special effort to go to the special 6:30 a.m. daily Lenten Mass. The purpose of all of these penitential practices was to clear the way for God’s grace to operate in our lives and to prepare our hearts for Easter joy! Now, our Lenten journey is behind us and our sacrifice and self-denial has given way to the joy of Easter! There’s no doubt that our Lenten acts do us good. Throughout the year, it is so easy to become overindulgent. In fact, I don’t know of anyone who is devoid of some kind of indulgent behavior. The realization on our part that we each have some weaknesses that need work is what makes Lent an attractive season. We might not all be successful at accomplishing our Lenten goals, but we still make the effort knowing that our Lenten sacrifices are good for our rebellious souls. If anything, they enable us to be a little less self-absorbed and a little more attentive to God’s movement within. That is a good thing, because it focuses us on our ultimate desire, which is to be in communion with God. Our Lenten observances form and shape us to be more responsive to God. Our little sacrifices, our prayers, our acts of charity, and our meditations make our souls more agile and receptive to the promptings of the Holy Spirit. In the end, those spiritual exercises renew us in our relationship with God and fill us with joy as we realize what Jesus has done for us. Jesus’ self-offering on the cross was not fruitless. He gave up his life for us out of love. His act of fidelity broke the chain of our human infidelity. By dying on the cross, he conquered death, which was a result of our human disobedience and infidelity. Then he rose to new life, opening for us the gates to eternal life. His suffering and death gave way to joy. That is what we celebrate today. We celebrate life and joy. Jesus rose to life and by virtue of our baptism, we participate in new life in Christ. The life we have received from him changes everything! Death may come to us all, but death does not have the final word. Life is the final statement. Christ’s victory over death is not something that we experience only when we die. The grace that flows forth from his cross and resurrection is something we experience here and now. When we embrace the life of a true follower of Christ, we experience the inner revival of our souls. Every experience of victory over personal weakness, every resistance against temptation and sin, and every instance of choice to attend church is accomplished through the power of Christ’s resurrection living within us. The same can be said for those times when we are diligent with regard to our personal responsibilities, when we listen to the voice of reason that leads us to compassion rather than judgment, or when we lift up our hearts in prayer for another. If we were reasonably successful in keeping our Lenten fasts, observing our penances, sticking to our plan to read scripture or do something extra as a sacrifice for Christ, then we experienced the victory that is ours in Christ. The key for us now, is to continue some of those same practices throughout the year. This would give evidence that Christ truly lives within us and that the power of his resurrection is at work in us. As we continue to celebrate the resurrection of Christ throughout the Easter Season, let’s make every effort to keep him alive in our hearts and pray that he will help us to persevere in his love. On behalf of the priests, deacons, and staff of St. Pius X Parish, I want to wish each and every one of you a very blessed and happy Easter! May God pour out his love upon you and your families! 50 Years of Faith

Dear Friends,

The Lord is Risen! He is Risen indeed! For the last several weeks we have been traveling the path of penance and self-denial. Ash Wednesday

seems like it was just yesterday.

Divine Mercy Sunday & Novena of ChapletsDivine Mercy Sunday is April 12th. Please come

celebrate with us at 3:00pm. Jesus revealed in various revelations to St. Faustina that it was His desire that we celebrate this special feast day and we make the chaplet part of our everyday prayers. Blessed John Paul II initiated the Divine Mercy Sunday and granted a plenary indulgent to those that participate. The Novena of chaplets will begin on Good Friday, April 3rd. We will say the Novena and the Chaplet each day in the church. The following is the schedule of times: Friday, April 3rd after 8:15am prayers; Saturday, April 4th after 8:15am prayers; Sunday, April 5th after 8:00am Mass; M-F, April 6th – 10th after 8:15am Mass and Saturday, April 11th at 8:15am.

With Gratitude to the Irish Festival Committee! We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the St. Patrick’s Day

Irish Festival Committee for their hard work and hours of effort in making our 20th Irish Festival a huge success for the parish. Special thanks to Maxine Sommers for “leading the charge” in assembling the committee and keeping everything on track. It was the most successful Irish Festival ever! Thanks also go to everyone who made special contributions to the effort to raise money for the new nativity figures. We are well on our way to a new set! Final results from the festival will be posted in the bulletin soon, as well as a list of donors.

Men’s Club RetreatAs we celebrated Easter this weekend, we welcomed new members

into the faith. Those who were confirmed made a deeper promise. What does that Confirmation “Yes” mean? Do you remember your commitment at Confirmation?

The “Confirmed” received a gift spoken by the Bishop, “Be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit”. When the disciples received the gift of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, Peter asked, “Brothers, what shall we do?”

The St. Pius X Men’s Club will be sponsoring a one-day retreat for men - 16 years and older, who have been confirmed, to investigate and understand the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. Through out the day there will be personal testimony and study sessions to evaluate and recognize the gifts, and then explore opportunities to utilize the gifts and fulfill the confirmation promise.

As always, there is no cost. The retreat is Saturday April 25th, from 8:00 am-3:00 pm in the Youth Building. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. After the retreat there will be a Mass at 3:00 pm and followed by a fellowship social from 3:30-4:30pm. Sign up sheets are located at the exit doors to the church. For more information or to sign up, please contact Steve Tagliabue at 361-994-9541 or email at [email protected].

Preparation for First CommunionParents whose children are preparing for First Holy

Communion are reminded that they are to be working with their children in knowing the prayers and material that is necessary for the reception of Holy Communion. These children will be interviewed beginning in April. Parents received a booklet at the beginning of the year with all required material.

First Communion Retreat—April 18th All children in Sacramental Prep II and their

parents are required to attend this retreat! If the children and their parent do not attend, these children will not make their First Communion on May 3rd.

He is Risen! The students and staff of St. Pius X Catholic School wish you a very blessed and happy Easter. Think of our students whenever you use those little bottles of holy water that were blessed on Holy Saturday. They were labeled and filled with water by our 5th and 6th graders. It’s our way of giving back to our parishioners.

Last week was a short one for us as we started our Easter holidays at noon on Holy Thursday. We won’t return to school until Tuesday, April 8th. Although it was a short week, we managed to accomplish several things during those 3 ½ days. We had a Student Council meeting, Last Supper celebration, a Seder Meal, basketball games after school and a March Manner of the Month lunch with the Principal.

All of our classes took part in Last Supper celebrations this past week; however, our 6th graders participated in a traditional Seder meal (celebration of the Jewish Passover) that was prepared and served by our parents. It took place in the Parish Hall and featured food such as lamb (represents how the Jewish people were saved by the blood of the lamb), charoset (represents the mortar the Jewish people used in slavery to build things), celery/parsley (bitter herbs to remind the Jewish people of the bitterness of slavery), and matzo crackers (to escape from the Egyptians, the Jews had no time to leaven bread. So they ate unleavened bread or matzo). It was a beautiful ceremony that was made even more special thanks to parishioner and school volunteer, Ruth Baltz. She not only knows about Seder meals, but all of the other traditions and ceremonies that our Jewish brothers and sisters celebrate throughout the year. Thank you Ms. Ruth for being a part of this ceremony!

Our Golf Tournament is rapidly approaching – less than two weeks away! This year’s tournament will be held at the Corpus Christi Country Club next Thursday, April 16th, with a shotgun start at 1:00 p.m. Teams are forming and sponsors are lending us a hand with their support. However, we need more players. Our goal is 100 players! We are only ½ way there. Last year, we had 120+ players participate, so I know we can reach our goal of 100. We will have nice prizes for the winners, as well as silent auction items for our golfers to bid on after they finish their play. We are blessed to have such great support from all who are purchasing raffle tickets and making extra donations. The winners of the raffle will be announced on Wednesday, the day before the tournament, and hopefully, it will be one of our own parishioners. If you know anyone who might want to play on a team, please let us know. The number at the school is 992-1343. We would love to sign them up.

Happy Easter and God Bless!

From the Parish Mailbox…Thanks! I would like to thank all the parishioners that sent

me cards and prayers for my recovery of cancer. This means so much to Douglas and me to have received all the prayers and kind words and thoughtfulness. I still have a long fight ahead, but I know I am not alone in this fight. Thanks again. Sharron and Doug Odle
