Question of the Week:

Fr. Gerard’s Corner No matter which selection is chosen for the second reading, Saint Paul tells us how we are to live differently now that Christ is risen. In his Letter to the Colossians, Paul tells us to “seek what is above,” because if we are part of the Body of Christ, we are now raised with Christ (Colossians 3:1). In his first Letter to the Corinthians, he commands us to “clear out the old yeast” and “become a fresh batch of dough” (1 Corinthians 5:7). All of us who participate in the Eucharist today are able to join in this meal of “unleavened bread of sincerity and truth” (1 Corinthians 5:8). We too share in the Resurrection and are therefore transformed.

Three different people approach the empty tomb in John’s account, and all three react differently. Mary Magdalene was afraid and upset, believing robbers had broken in. Peter, the first to enter the empty tomb, was observant, but confused. John, the disciple whom Jesus loved, saw and believed. In the verses that follow in John’s Gospel, Jesus appears to a distraught Mary Magdalene just outside the tomb and she believes. Later he also appears to Peter, as well as the rest of the disciples, and asks Peter to “tend my sheep” (John 21:16).

Each comes to faith in the risen Jesus at different times and by different means.

Today we will stand before God and each other and renew our baptismal promises. By our baptism, we are united with Christ and share in the common priesthood of all who believe. In the first reading, we hear Peter telling members of the early church that they have been commissioned to preach and to testify in Jesus’ name. By extension, we are also called to do this. This is our responsibility as members of the Body of Christ. We can and shall bear witness in word and in deed that all who believe will receive forgiveness of sins.

What is Prayer Ministry? A 7-week series that helps answer the question: “What is Prayer Ministry?”, will appear here. Each week asks a question and explains, using Biblical references and techniques, what St. James Prayer Ministry is all about. Each week builds on the next, so tune in and learn what all about Prayer Ministry at St. James-St. Leo.

What Might I Experience in Prayer Ministry?

Every Sunday throughout the entire year, all are welcome to receive prayer following the 9am Mass in the Chapel behind the altar. Probably one of the most common experiences you will discover after being “prayed over’ is peace. Frequently people feel a gentle warmth or even heat. Other times there are no physical sensations at all. However, people often find they are not as worried, anxious or stressed as they were prior to receiving prayer.

“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you: not as the world gives, do I give to you.

St. James Academy THANKS YOU!

Catholic Schools' Week 2018 was an opportunity for all Catholic schools throughout the nation to open their doors to their parishes and extended communities. Thank you for answering our invitation.

This year, St. James Academy asked our parish to contribute to our school's annual fund- The Guardian Angel Campaign. This campaign helps bridge the gap between our affordable tuition and the actual cost of educating each student. In addition, it ensures that we can continue the meaningful programs we offer: PE, Art, Technology, Spanish, Sustainability, Organic Gardening, Robotics and Inclusion. The funds enable us to recruit and retain highly qualified faculty and staff and update our facilities for 21st century learners. On the Sunday during Catholic Schools' Week, envelopes were distributed to parishioners that were collected at all the Masses.

Thank you for answering our request. We received a check from the parish for over $700. Our students, faculty and parents would like to thank all those who contributed to this impactful campaign. Co-principal, Christine Lang says of the donations, "These contributions are a reminder that our parish is invested in our school community and is dedicated to its continued development and success. We are grateful to everyone who gave to this campaign and as a school hope to build supportive, strong relationships with our parish community."

The Academy's doors are always open, stop by to say hello, learn more about us, join us for 8:00 Mass on Fridays or to gather more information. Again, many thanks.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The Paschal Mystery is the key to our Christian faith: the dying and rising of Jesus that is the pattern of our life. In their first steps on the road of faith, the catechumens feel the cross of glory traced over their eyes, on their lips, across their shoulders, on their ears, over their heart, and on their feet. The mystery is that even death gives way to life for those who are held in the embrace of Jesus. Today, many new Christians arise from the waters of the font. Yet the font is not the destination of their journey. The goal is Pentecost, fifty days from now, and a lifetime of praise to the Father, in Christ, in the embrace of the Holy Spirit, for the sake of the world. “Neophyte,” our ancient word for newly-baptized people, means “newly-planted” in Greek. If someone in your parish has just been baptized, welcome them today. The smiles on their faces and the light in the eyes is a foretaste of heaven.

PROCLAIM THE RISEN CHRIST On Easter morning everything—the spring weath-er, the flowers, birds and butterflies, the people around us in their finery, the beautiful liturgy and music—everything seems to bear witness that Jesus Christ is risen today! Like the eyewitness accounts in today’s scriptures, the glorious and joyful life all around us helps us to believe the good news of the Resurrection and sing “Alleluia!” In the scriptures today we hear from Peter and Paul and John. All three speak with conviction about witnessing the resurrected Christ. John’s Gospel account includes Mary of Magdala, who also was privileged to witness the Resurrection and tell others the good news. On this glorious Easter Sunday can we ourselves give eyewitness accounts that Jesus Christ is risen today, alive and active in our lives?

St. James—St. Leo Catholic Community is under the pastoral care of the Eudist Fathers, or Congregation of Jesus and Mary. We owe our name to Saint John Eudes who founded the Congregation in France in 1643. The Eudists currently operate in 15 countries, most of which are in the developing world. Evangelization, mainly with the poor and the youth, is our primary purpose, as well as formation to ministry in the

training of diocesan priests and lay ministers. Our motto is “To Serve Christ and His Church.” For more information visit: http://www.eudistsusa.org

Mission Statement: To love God, proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ, and serve all God's people.
