Review the Story

Read over the Bible stories leading up to Jesus’ resurrection. Let your child help you as you talk about

those stories. Talk about how Easter is the time we celebrate Jesus!

As they approached Jerusalem, Jesus sent out two disciples. He said, “Go to the village ahead of

you. As soon as you get there, you will find a donkey’s colt tied up. Untie it and bring it here.

If anyone says anything to you, tell him the Lord needs it.” The disciples went and did what

Jesus told them. They found a colt in the street. It was tied at a doorway. They untied it. Some

people asked, “What are you doing?” They answered as Jesus had told them to. So the people

let them go. The disciples brought the colt to Jesus. They threw coats over it and put Jesus on it.

A very large crowd spread their coats on the road. Others spread branches they had cut in the

fields. The whole crowd began to praise God with joy. They shouted, “Hosanna! Blessed is the

one who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!”

The day came to celebrate the Passover Feast. Jesus sent out two of his disciples. He told them,

“Go into the city. A man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him. He will show you a

large upstairs room. Prepare for us to eat there.” The disciples went into the city. They found

things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover meal. When evening came,

Jesus arrived with the twelve. While they were eating, Jesus took bread. He gave thanks and

broke it. He handed it to his disciples and said, “Take it. This is my body.” Then he took the

cup. He gave thanks and handed it to them. All of them drank from it. “This is my blood

poured out to forgive the sins of many,” he said. Then they sang a hymn and went out to the

Mount of Olives.

Jesus and his disciples went to Gethsemane. Jesus said, “Sit here while I pray.” He took Peter,

James, and John along with him. He got down on his knees and prayed, “Father, if you are

willing, take this cup away from me. But do what you want, not what I want.” An angel from

heaven appeared to Jesus and gave him strength. He got up from prayer and went back to the

disciples. He found them sleeping. “Why are you sleeping?” he asked. “Get up! Pray that you

won’t fall into sin when you are tempted.” Once more Jesus went away and prayed the same

thing. Then he came back. Again he found them sleeping. So he left them. For the third time

he prayed. He returned to the disciples and said, “Are you still sleeping? Look! The hour is

near. The Son of Man is about to be handed over to sinners. Get up! Let us go! Here comes the

one who is handing me over!”

Jesus had finished praying. He and His disciples went into a grove of olive trees. Judas knew

the place. Jesus had often been in that place. So Judas came, guiding a group of soldiers. They

were carrying torches and weapons. Jesus asked them, “Who is it that you want?” “Jesus of

Nazareth,” they replied. “I am he,” Jesus said. Judas went to Jesus. He said, “Greetings,

Rabbi!” And he kissed him. Jesus asked him, “Judas, are you handing over the Son of Man with

a kiss?” Peter had a sword and pulled it out. He cut off a servant’s right ear. Jesus commanded

Peter, “Put your sword away!” And he touched the man’s ear and healed him. Then the soldiers

arrested Jesus. They tied him up. All the disciples left and ran away.

Early in the morning, the priests, the elders and the whole Sanhedrin made a decision. They tied

Jesus up. Then they handed him over to Pilate. “Are you the king of the Jews?” asked Pilate.

“Yes, it is just as you say,” Jesus replied. It was the practice at the Passover Feast to let one

prisoner go free. The people could choose the one they wanted. Pilate asked, “Which one do

you want me to set free? Barabbas? Or Jesus? “Barabbas,” they answered. “What should I do

with Jesus?” Pilate asked. They all answered, “Crucify him!” “Why? What wrong has he

done?” asked Pilate. But they shouted even louder, “Crucify him!” Pilate saw that he wasn’t

getting anywhere. So he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. “I am not guilty

of this man’s death,” he said. Pilate let Barabbas go free. But he had Jesus whipped. Then he

handed him over to be nailed to a cross.

Jesus had to carry his cross to a place called The Skull. There the soldiers nailed him to the

cross. Jesus said, “Father, forgive them. They don’t know what they are doing.” A written sign

above him read: This is Jesus, the King of the Jews. Two robbers were crucified with him. One

was on his right and one on his left. For three hours, the land was covered with darkness. Jesus

cried out in a loud voice, “My God, my God, why have you deserted me?” After Jesus cried out

again, he bowed his head and died.

As evening approached, a rich man went to Pilate. His name was Joseph. He asked for Jesus’

body. Pilate ordered that it be given to him. Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean

linen cloth. He placed it in his own new tomb. He rolled a big stone in front of the tomb. Then

he went away. Pilate put a seal on the stone and placed some guards on duty.

The Tomb is Empty/ Jesus Appears to His Disciples Read With Me Bible

Page 398-401

It was dawn on the first day of the week. Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at

the tomb. They saw that the stone had been rolled away. They entered the tomb. As they did,

they saw an angel dressed in a white robe. The angel said to the women, “Don’t be afraid. I

know you are looking for Jesus. He is not here! He has risen, just as He said! Go! Tell His

disciples and Peter.” So the women hurried away from the tomb. They were afraid, but they

were filled with joy. They ran to tell the disciples.

On the evening of the first day of the week, the disciples were together. They had locked the

doors because they were afraid of the Jews. Jesus came in and stood among them. He said,

“May peace be with you!” Then He showed them His hands and His side. The disciples were

very happy when they saw the Lord. Jesus asked them, “Do you have anything to eat?” They

gave Him a piece of cooked fish. He took it and ate it in front of them.

Discussing the story: Ask: Who came to the tomb first? What happened to the big stone that was in front of the

tomb? What did the angel say to the women? What did the women do? What happened when

the disciples were together? What did they offer to Jesus?

Say: Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. They saw that the stone had

been rolled away. The angel told them not to be afraid because Jesus had risen, just like He

said. The women hurried to go tell the disciples. Jesus showed up in the room where the disciples

were. They offered Jesus something to eat.

Pray: Thank God for sending Jesus. Ask God to help us remember to ask for forgiveness when

we do something wrong. Thank Jesus for loving us so much that He died for us.

Bible Game:

Roll ‘n’ Toss (Adapted from, Group’s Hands On Bible Curriculum Spring 2008)

Place an empty tub or box on its side a few feet away from the children. Make sure the

open end faces the child. You can use a ball for the stone. Hand the child a “stone”.

Invite the child to roll or toss the stones into the tub. Each time a stone goes inside the

box, lead everyone in cheering ‘JESUS IS ALIVE”.

FAMILY FUN TIME

Hop To It!! (Adapted from; “God Prints Family Fun Stuff Bible Stories”)

As a family, make a basketful of joy to give to an unsuspecting neighbor or friend. Decorate & then fill the basket

with items that bring joy, such as, hot chocolate, crayons, stickers, candy, candles, or bubbles. Add fun-filled notes

& reminders of the reason for the season for extra special touches. Be very sneaky when you deliver the basketful

An Easter Calendar A Big Idea

It is amazing how many events took place in Jesus’ life during the week between Palm Sunday & Easter. I just 1 week, people changed their minds from wanting to crown Jesus as King to wanting Jesus killed, crucified. During the week before Easter;

· Jesus rode a donkey into Jerusalem as people shouted Hosanna!

· Jesus celebrated Passover with His disciples.

· Jesus prayed & was arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane.

· Jesus was crucified.

· Jesus was buried in the tomb.

· Jesus came back to life—the resurrection!

Activity Make an Easter Calendar & each day during the week add an item to the calendar & talk about what was going on in Jesus’ life

on that day. Create a six-day calendar using a large piece of white paper. Divide the page into 6 sections or 2 rows of 3 sections

each. Each section represents 1 day. Label the sections beginning with Palm Sunday & Ending with Easter Sunday. Use the materials below. Make items to fit the size of your calendar squares.

Page 9: Easter HAPPY EASTER! 4/12/20...Easter HAPPY EASTER! 4/12/20 Scripture Reference: Matthew 28:1-15, Mark 16:1-8, Luke 24-1-12, John 20:1-9 Help a child to: • Realize that Jesus is

Materials

· Palm leaves (leaves from green paper)

· Communion Bread or cracker to attach to calendar.

· Praying hands Trace someone’s hand, fingers closed, on paper. Cut out “praying hands”

· Crosses Make 3 crosses using glue & sticks.

· Tomb Draw & cut out a tomb from black paper & a stone from brown paper.

· Angel Use a picture of an angel or cut an angel from yellow paper.

Display the calendar by taping it on a wall or window in a prominent place. Starting with Palm Sunday, add a symbol to the calendar using glue & talk briefly about what the symbol represents. Read the related scripture. (1) Luke 19:28, (2) Luke 22:7,

(3) Luke 22:39, (4) Luke 23:26, (5) Luke 23:50, and (6) Luke 24:1.

Application Easter is a special time when we remember that Jesus rose from the dead. In fact, it’s such a special time that we have a

celebration and make it a holiday. It’s a privilege now to know that Jesus is in heaven preparing a place for us. Someday we

too will go to heaven and spend time with Him if we have asked Jesus to come into our hearts. God made a special plan for

us.
