SAINT MARK’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH COLUMBUS, OHIO

EASTER SUNDAY “He is risen!”

Welcome to Saint Mark’s Episcopal Church on the Feast of the Lord’s Resurrection.

Today the Church completes its three great days of celebrating redemption. Since Maundy Thursday we have been

involved in an extended liturgy which will be brought to its conclusion today.

This is the celebration of the Passover of Christ from death to life. It is also the celebration of our own Passover in

Holy Baptism in which “we were buried with Christ in his death and raised with him.”

Throughout the fifty days of Easter, the first reading on Sundays is from the Acts of the Apostles. These weekly

readings from Acts describe the life of the first Christians and their proclamation of Christ’s resurrection. So today we

hear a portion of the sermon Peter preached to Cornelius, the first Gentile Christian. The passage from I Corinthians

contains Paul’s witness to Jesus’ resurrection as it was told him by the other apostles. He concludes with his own

experience of Jesus’ appearance to him.

The Gospel reading from Mark describes the women coming to the tomb and finding it empty. A young man clad in a

white robe—a baptismal symbol—tells them that Christ is risen and sends them to tell the disciples.

As we rejoice in our new life in the risen Christ on this day, he comes among us and is made known to us in the

Breaking of the Bread. We, like Mary and the other women, are sent forth to tell others of his resurrection.

THE COLLECT OF THE DAY

Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray.

O God, who for our redemption gave your only-begotten Son to the death of the cross, and by his glorious resurrection delivered us from the power of our enemy: Grant us to die daily to sin, that we may evermore live with him in the joy of his resurrection; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

THE FIRST LESSON: ACTS 10:34–43 (seated) Reader The Spirit is speaking. People God’s people are listening. Reader A reading from the Book of Acts.

Peter began to speak to Cornelius and the other Gentiles: “I truly understand that God shows no partiality,

but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. You know the message

he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ—he is Lord of all. That message spread

throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: how God anointed Jesus of

Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were

oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in

Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; but God raised him on the third day and allowed

him to appear, not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank

with him after he rose from the dead. He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the

one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testify about him that everyone who

believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”

Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

PSALM 118:1–2,14–23 (Sarah B., cantor) Plainsong, Mode 2 The antiphon is sung first by the cantor, then repeated by all, and then sung by all after verses 14, 16, 18, 20, and 23.

1 Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good;

his mercy endures for ever.

2 Let Israel now proclaim,

“His mercy endures for ever.”

14 The LORD is my strength and my song,

and he has become my salvation. ANTIPHON

15 There is a sound of exultation and victory

in the tents of the righteous:

the right hand of the LORD is exalted!

17 I shall not die, but live,

and declare the works of the LORD.

THE SECOND LESSON: 1 CORINTHIANS 15:19–26 (seated)

Reader A reading from the First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians. If for this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied. But in fact Christ has been

raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have died. For since death came through a human being, the

resurrection of the dead has also come through a human being; for as all die in Adam, so all will be made alive

in Christ. But each in his own order: Christ the first fruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ.

Then comes the end, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father, after he has destroyed every ruler

and every authority and power. For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last

enemy to be destroyed is death.

Reader Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. People Thanks be to God.

THE GOSPEL: JOHN 20:1–18

Gospeller The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the

stone had been removed from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one

whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where

they have laid him.” Then Peter and the other disciple set out and went toward the tomb. The two were

running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent down to look in and

saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into

the tomb. He saw the linen wrappings lying there, and the cloth that had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with

the linen wrappings but rolled up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also

went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not understand the scripture, that he must rise from the

dead. Then the disciples returned to their homes. But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb. As she wept, she

bent over to look into the tomb; and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had been

lying, one at the head and the other at the feet. They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to

them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” When she had said this,

she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her,

“Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you looking for?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to

him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” Jesus said

to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to him in Hebrew, “Rabbouni!” (which means Teacher). Jesus said to her,

“Do not hold on to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to

them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” Mary Magdalene went and

announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”; and she told them that he had said these things to her.

Gospeller The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

THE SERMON (seated) Paul St. Germain

THE NICENE CREED (standing, said by all) BCP, p. 358

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING—PRAYER B (standing) BCP, p. 367

Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give God thanks and praise. Celebrant It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty,

Creator of heaven and earth. But chiefly are we bound to praise you for the glorious resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; for he is the true Paschal Lamb, who was sacrificed for us, and has taken away the sin of the world. By his death he has destroyed death, and by his rising to life again he has won for us everlasting life. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

The people stand or kneel.

Then the Celebrant continues

Celebrant We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.

It is also the celebration of our own Passover in Holy Baptism in which “we were buried with Christ in his death and raised with him.”

Today the Nicene Creed is replaced with the renewal of our Baptismal Covenant. In every baptism, we, the Church, give

birth to new members by water and the Holy Spirit. As the newly baptized rise from the waters, the resurrection is made new in our midst.

The first reading is Isaiah’s vision of the fulfillment of God’s kingdom, when all of humanity gathers on God’s holy mountain in festivity as death is destroyed and the richness of eternal life is revealed. The second reading from Acts is the first in a

sequence we will hear throughout this season describing the joy of the resurrection as it was experienced in the first days of the Church. Today we hear a portion of the sermon Peter preached to the first Gentiles to be baptized.

The women come to the tomb and find it empty. Then two men appear and tell them that Jesus has risen, just as he had told

them he would.

As we rejoice in our new life in the risen Christ on this day, he comes among us and is made known to us in the breaking of the bread. We, like the women at the tomb and like Peter and the others, are sent forth to tell the world of his resurrec-

tion.

Please feel free to join us in this celebration of God’s victory over death. May you find in this gathering the assurance that God is even now raising you to new life.

Peter began to speak to Cornelius and the other Gentiles: “I truly understand that God shows no partiali-

ty, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. You know the

message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ—he is Lord of all. That message

spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: how God anointed

Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who

were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and

in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; but God raised him on the third day and

allowed him to appear, not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate

and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify

that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testify about him

that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”

Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

Amen.

Ye choirs of new Jerusalem, Your sweetest notes employ, The paschal victory to hymn, In strains of holy joy. For Judah’s Lion bursts His chains, Crushing the serpent’s head; And cries aloud through death’s domains To wake the imprisoned dead. Ye choirs of new Jerusalem (etc.) Devouring depths of hell their prey At His command restore; His ransomed hosts pursue their way Where Jesus goes before.

Triumphant in his Glory now To Him all power is giv’n; To Him in one communion bow All saints in earth and heav’n. While we, His soldiers, praise our King, His mercy we implore, Within His palace bright to bring And keep us, evermore. Ye choirs of new Jerusalem (etc.) All glory to the Father be, All glory to the Son, All glory, Holy Ghost, to Thee, While endless ages run. Alleluia! Amen.

Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give God thanks and praise.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

Celebrant & We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory; People Celebrant And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your

Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with our patron Saint Mark all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation. Awake, arise! lift up thy voice, Which as a trumpet swell! Rejoice in Christ! again rejoice, And on his praises dwell! Let us not doubt, as doubted some, When first the Lord appeared; But full of faith and reverence come, What time his voice is heard. And ev’n as John, who ran so well, Confess upon our knees The Prince that locks up death and hell, And has himself the keys.

And thus through gladness and surprise The saints their Saviour treat; Nor will they trust their ears and eyes But by his hands and feet: Those hands of liberal love indeed In infinite degree, Those feet still frank to move and bleed For millions and for me. O Dead, arise! O Friendless, stand By seraphim adored! O Solitude, again command Thy host from heaven restored!

Mission Statement:

Saint Mark’s seeks to be a Christ-centered congregation where people can come to understand and strengthen their relationships with God. We want everyone to feel included, to be nurtured spiritually and for our worship together to be a bond for Christian education and fellowship. As a caring community we strive to be faithful stewards of God’s gifts, ministering to one another both within and beyond the parish.

Part of the Diocese of Southern Ohio, Saint Mark’s held its first worship service in 1951 in a converted Methodist church in Grandview. Ground was broken in 1953 for the Parish Hall (now the Education Building) where services were held until the current Nave and Sanctuary was completed in 1958. Office space in an adjacent building was purchased in 1989. Major renovations of the entire facility occurred in 2004 and 2008 creating a campus today that empowers Christ’s ministry within and beyond our parish.

Saint Mark’s is a member of the Episcopal Church in the United States – a community of 2.4 million members in 114 dioceses in the Americas and abroad. Episcopal means a church with bishops. Bishops are the leaders of the church and spiritual descendents of the apostles of Jesus Christ. We are also part of the worldwide Anglican Communion consisting of 82 million members in more than 160 countries. Anglican are those churches who trace their history to the Church of England.
