DOES THE GOSPEL GIVE YOU JOY? The joy of the gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus. Those who accept his offer of salvation are set free from sin, sorrow, inner emptiness and loneliness. With Christ joy is constantly born anew. From Evangelii Gaudium, Pope Francis’ letter on the “joy

of the Gospel”

THE HOLY FATHER’S PRAYER INTENTION FOR APRIL

For Those who have Responsibility in Economic Matters. That economists may have the courage to reject any economy of exclusion and know how to open new paths.

WHY DID JESUS LEAVE THE BURIAL CLOTH ROLLED UP AND IN A SEPARATE PLACE?

A Jewish custom of the time explains why John noted and recounted this detail.

Aleteia.org – St. John’s Gospel specifies a curious detail in its recounting of the Resurrection.

When Simon Peter arrived after [John], he went into the tomb and saw the burial cloths there, and the cloth that had covered [Jesus’] head, not with the burial cloths but rolled up in a separate place.

Why would John have noted the placement of the burial cloths in light of the astonishing fact of the absence of Jesus’ body? And why would he have thought it important to include this detail in his telling of the events of that first Easter Sunday morning?

In fact, it was an important detail.

According to Father Chrystian Shankar, the rolling up and placement of this cloth hearkened to a Jewish custom of the time. It related to a common practice used by servants and masters of this era.

A servant, after he had prepared the dining table for his master, would stand to the side, out of sight of the master, but attentive to the progression of the meal. He wouldn’t dare to return to the table until the master had finished his meal.

When the master was finished, he would rise, clean his fingers, mouth, and beard, and leave the “napkin” crumpled in a ball on the table. The wrinkled, discarded napkin indicated “I have finished.”

If, however, for whatever reason, the master left the table with the intention of returning, then he would crease the napkin into folds and leave it beside his dishes. This was a message for the servant that he was not to disturb the table, given that the master had indicated: “I am returning.”

This, then, is perhaps the reason for John’s attention to the detail of Our Lord’s face cloth.

Jesus had told them with his words that the Son of Man would return. That morning, he repeated the promise, with the seemingly inconsequential, but very symbolic, gesture of leaving his face cloth rolled to the side, assuring us that he’d not left for good.

Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid. You heard me tell you, “I am going away and I will come back to you.” (John 14:27-28)

"Even on the cross He did not hide Himself from sight; rather, He made all creation witness to the presence of its Maker. Then, having once let it be seen that it was truly dead, He did not allow that temple of His body to linger long, but forthwith on the third day raised it up, impassible and incorruptible, the pledge and token of His victory."

– St. Athanasius of Alexandria

Sin does not get the last word in our lives… God does not abandon the human race to sin. Jesus Christ enters human history as the perfect “image of the invisible God” and the “new man.” He delivers us from sin and restores our human capacity for God and our ability to carry out God’s intentions for our lives.

DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY Sunday, April 8th • 2:45 pm

Divine Mercy Sunday will be celebrated at Our Lady of Loretto Church next Sunday, April 8th – the Feast of Divine Mercy. At 2:45 pm we will gather in the Church to pray the Chaplet of Mercy and venerate The Image of Mercy. If you have questions, call Diana Roda, 424-4175.

Concerning the Feast of Mercy Jesus said: My daughter [Saint Faustina], tell the whole world about My Inconceivable Mercy. I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls, and especially for poor sinners. On that day the very depths of My tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the fount of My mercy. The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall

obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment.

On that day all the divine floodgates through which grace flow are opened. Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet. My mercy is so great that no mind, be it of man or of angel, will be able to fathom it throughout all eternity. (Diary 699)

Yes, the first Sunday after Easter is the Feast of Mercy, but there must also be deeds of mercy, which are to arise out of love for Me. You are to show mercy to your neighbors always and everywhere. You must not shrink from this or try to absolve yourself from it. (Diary 742)

Plenary Indulgence on Divine Mercy Sunday On June 29, 2002, the Apostolic Penitentiary of the Holy See promulgated a decree creating new indulgences that may be gained by the faithful in connection with the celebration of Divine Mercy Sunday. This decree grants a plenary indulgence to those who comply with all the conditions established, and a partial indulgence to those who incompletely fulfill the conditions.

Summary of the Decree of Indulgence O God, your mercy knows no bounds and the treasure of your goodness is infinite..." (Prayer after the "Te Deum" Hymn)

Plenary indulgence I. The usual conditions for every plenary indulgence:

• Sacramental Confession* • Eucharistic Communion (according to previously

issued norms, preferably on the day, or the days before or after)

• Prayer for the intentions of the Supreme Pontiff

II. The specific conditions for this Indulgence On Divine Mercy Sunday

• In any church or chapel, in a spirit that is completely detached from the affection for a sin, even a venial sin, take part in the prayers and devotions held in

honor of Divine Mercy • Or, in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament

exposed or reserved in the tabernacle, recite the Our Father and the Creed, adding a devout prayer to the merciful Lord Jesus (e.g. Merciful Jesus, I trust in you!")

Partial Indulgence A partial indulgence, granted to the faithful who, at least with a contrite heart, pray to the merciful Lord Jesus a legitimately approved invocation. (e.g. Jesus I trust in You. My Jesus mercy. Or any other approved invocation)

Those who cannot go to church or the seriously ill Conditions for a Plenary Indulgence:

• Totally detesting any sin, • The intention of fulfilling as soon as possible the

three usual conditions of Confession, Communion and prayers for the Holy Father

• Recite the Our Father and the Creed before a devout image of Our Merciful Lord Jesus

• Pray a devout invocation to the Merciful Lord Jesus (e.g. Merciful Jesus, I trust in you).

If it is impossible to do even this: • With a spiritual intention unite with those carrying

out the prescribed practice for obtaining the Indulgence in the usual way and

• Offer to the Merciful Lord a prayer and the sufferings of their illness and the difficulties of their lives, with the resolution to accomplish as soon as possible the three conditions prescribed to obtain the plenary indulgence.

*The confessional requirement does not have to be met on the Feast itself – about 20 days before or after the Feast is sufficient. We would only need confession again, if received earlier in the Lenten or Easter Season, if we were in the state of mortal sin on the Feast.

Words of Our Lord, the Merciful Savior to Saint Faustina

“The flames of mercy are burning me. I desire to pour them out upon human souls. Oh, what pain they cause Me when they do not want to accept them!…

Tell My daughter, that I am Love and Mercy itself. When a soul approaches Me with trust, I fill it with such an abundance of graces that it cannot contain them within itself, but radiates them to other souls.” (Diary 1074)

“There is no misery that could be a match for My mercy, neither will misery exhaust it, because as it [mercy] is being granted – it increases. The soul that trusts in My mercy is most fortunate, because I Myself take care of it.” (1273)

My daughter, tell souls that I am giving them My mercy as a defense. I Myself am fighting for them and am bearing the just anger of My Father. (1516)

“I have opened my Heart as a living fountain of mercy. Let all souls draw life from it. Let them approach this sea of mercy with great trust. Sinners will attain justification, and the just will be confirmed in good. Whoever places his trust in My mercy will be filled with My divine peace at the hour of death.” (Diary 1520)
