Slow down, relax... and take in the wide open space and fresh country air that forms a lasting theme throughout the region.

The heart of the Eastern Cape is

here in the Eastern Cape Midlands

– a place where the province’s

cultural heartbeat still pulses and

time seems to stand still. The ar-

ea’s incredible scenery dominates

conversation among tourists, but

dig a little deeper and you will find

that it is a hive of activity for out-

door enthusiasts and home to nu-

merous high-quality game reserves

for superb wildlife viewing and hunt-

ing or safari opportunities. In fact,

you would be hard pressed to find

a region more perfectly suited to

outdoor pursuits than the Eastern

Cape Midlands, including some of

the country’s best weather.

No longer simply a convenient stopover point for travellers, the Midlands has

undergone a transformation and is an attractive destination in its own right,

with numerous trendy galleries, guest-houses and restaurants supplement-ing the wide range of historical sites

and the picture-postcard scenery that greets you at every turn.

With its rugged and intense beauty, the Eastern Cape Mid-lands exhibits a lasting sense

of wide-open spaces and fresh country air, with the Karoo-like arid regions of the west giving way to the high, mountainous regions of the central areas, which in turn transform into the wild and open areas of the east. Throughout this region you can be sure that the skies will not disappoint, whether they be pure blue, dotted with clouds or part of the many mesmerizing sunsets that give way to some of the best star gazing in the country.

Visit the land of

diversityThis is an area that played a significant role in the liberation of South Africa and as such plays host to an abundance of cultural and heritage sites. The four self-drive tourism routes not only provide valuable insight into the struggle he-roes and places but into the heart and soul of a people who fought tirelessly to free them-selves from an unjust system of government. It is here where the great struggle icons Chris Hani, after whom the municipal district in named, Walter Sisulu, Dr AB Xuma and James Calata were born and in almost every town and remote rural area you can find traces of the local heroes and heroines who made the ultimate sacrifice in the fight for freedom.

For the outdoor enthusiast, adventure activ-ities abound, ranging from those requiring nerves of steel, such as white-water rafting, to the more serene pastimes like leisurely strolls in the great outdoors and the more skilled, such as fly-fishing in some of the country’s fin-est trout dams and rivers.Rock paintings from the country’s earliest in-habitants, the San people, provide a unique eye into the world of many generations ago, while the region’s numerous fossil sites bear testimony to a time before then.

Most of the paintings are mapped out and abundant in areas such as Tsomo, Cofimvaba, Elliot and Engcobo, but there are still many that lie undiscovered in the more remote areas of the region. Elliot is regarded as one of the finest hiking areas in the country and there are numerous trails that await the outdoor enthu-siast.
