ULAANBAATAR - NATIONAL HISTORY MUSEUM - TUMEN EKH ENSEMBLE
Your guide and driver will meet you in the arrivals hall at Ulaanbaatar Chinggis
Khan Airport. Transfer to the hotel and check into your room. The plan for today is
quite flexible, as arrival times will influence things, and you may want some
downtime to relax. You may also need to sort out exchanging money and other
practical things.
Meet your guide in the hotel reception at 14:00 for a leisurely walk across the
impressive Sukhbaatar Square to visit the National History Museum with its well-
laid out informative displays showcasing the country's fascinating past.
Afterwards, walk south towards the city's main park, and enjoy an intimate
performance of music and dance by the Tumen Ekh ensemble at a small theatre. A
welcome dinner at one of our favourite Mongolian restaurants rounds off your first
day in Mongolia.
Ulaanbaatar , meaning "Red Hero", was so
named in 1924, following the creation of the
Mongolian People's Republic. The city was
founded in 1639 as a moveable Buddhist
monastic centre but in 1778 it settled
permanently at its present location on the
Tuul River in north-eastern central Mongolia.
The city lies at an elevation of about 1,310
metres (4,300 ft) and is home to almost half
of the country's 2.7m population.Standard Twin Room, Ulaanbaatar Hotel
ULAANBAATAR - TERELJ NATIONAL PARK - TURTLE ROCK
Your guide and driver will pick you up at 09:30 from the hotel - or at a time agreed
between you and your guide beforehand. Journey east to Terelj, stopping at the
sacred Turtle Rock which you can climb up, and visiting the nearby Aryabal
Meditation Temple at the head of the valley. The National Park yields some great
scenery which makes it a very popular weekend getaway for both locals and
tourists alike. You will pass through the main valley to a more secluded ger camp
nestled against the hills. In the afternoon head off on a walk from the camp, giving
stunning panoramic views of the area.
In the evening you will enjoy some traditional Mongolian food - perhaps some
huushuur (fried dumplings) or maybe a feast of khorkhog - a dish of mutton
steamed with hot stones out of the fire.
Terelj National Park covers an area of 2,864 square kilometres, and is characterised by undulating hills, interesting rock formations, a
network of streams and rivers, and lush valleys inhabited by nomadic families. Beyond the main valley, first developed for tourism in 1964,
the park joins the Khan-Khentii Specially Protected Area which is almost completely uninhabited by humans, but is home to endangered
species of moose, brown bear, and weasel, to name but a few, and to over 250 species of birds.

Kayaking is a great way to experience the
wild natural landscapes of Mongolia, whilst
also being exhilarating and active. Our
kayaks are robust, and of top commercial
outfitter quality. We also provide lifejackets
and dry bags to keep your personal
equipment in - cameras etc. - and we have a
selection of sizes of water shoes for you to
choose from.
TERELJ - TUUL RIVER KAYAKING
After breakfast, say goodbye to your pack-horses and horse guides, and it's onto
the river with the kayaks. The wide, shallow, obstacle-free, but fast-flowing river
with many twists and turns makes ideal conditions. The speed of the river will
depend on time of year and recent rainfall, but the current will be between 5-
10km/h, so you can cover some decent distance.
You can decide with your guide how long you want to go for, but we suggest a
couple of hours before lunch and a couple after, before stopping to make camp on
the banks of the river. You can do more or less, as there is a stretch of around
60km available.
The vehicle will carry all luggage and equipment and will meet the group at pick-up
points each day - on the 1st day you will stay in guest gers next to a nomadic
family, and at a riverside ger camp the 2nd day.

TERELJ - AR KHURKH VALLEY - BARUUN BAYAN SARIDAG - MT. ALTAN ULGII -
DUND BAYAN - BARUUN BAYAN ADAG - NUUNAIN BULAN - TUUL RIVER
In the morning of the first day, drive across the Terelj River and meet the local
wrangler who will be providing the pack-horses for your trek. Whilst things are
being loaded onto the horses, there should be time to step inside a local family's
ger and experience local hospitality. Then you begin the trek northwards through
alongside the Terelj River, winding its way down relatively narrow valleys with
steep hills on either side, before the terrain opens up and you turn North East into
Ar Khurkh Valley. This is the location of the autumn and winter encampments of
the herdsmen of the Terelj area. Ibex roam this region but they are shy and
nervous creatures - so you are more likely to see foxes and wolves, although don't
worry as they tend to keep their distance from humans.
You will pass through more rocky terrain, passing over the Khotol Pass and then to
the foothills of Altan Ulgii Mountain which you will climb. Then you start the route
back south-east via Dund Bayan and the wider valleys of Baruun Bayan Adag until
you reach Bosgiin Guur and the Tuul River where the vehicle will meet you with the
kayaks ready for the next section of the trip.
Over the above 7 days you will walk for approximately 5-7 hours a day, covering
between 20-30km depending on the terrain and gradient. Pack horses will carry
tents and camping equipment - evenings will be spent round a camp fire with rustic
fare, and nights spent under canvas.

ULAANBAATAR
After a leisurely breakfast, drive back west to the capital. You can discuss exact timings with your guide but we suggest getting
back into town around lunchtime and then in the afternoon you'll have time to do some shopping - perhaps at the Gobi Cashmere
outlet store on your way back into town, and then also at any of the decent craft outlets (Tsagaan Alt felt shop, Quilters, Mary and
Martha) or the State Department Store. Your guide will be on hand to assist. After freshening up at the hotel, enjoy a farewell
meal at one of our favourite restaurants.

CHINGGIS STATUE - GUN GALUUT NATURE RESERVE
After breakfast, set off for the remarkable Chinggis statue near Erdene. Climb up
inside until you reach the exterior staircase which runs up the mane of the horse to
a viewpoint overlooking the Tuul River, Terelj & the hills of Khan Khentii - Chinggis'
homeland. Then continue to Gun Galuut and settle into the comfortable ger camp
near the Kherlen River.
The plan for the next day and a half is pretty flexible, but there is lots to do,
depending on your interests. At some stage head into the nature reserve for an
exploratory walk - it's a great place for walking at any time, but if you are
interested in seeing and/or photographing animals, then the best time to go is
dawn or dusk. There will also be a chance to visit a nomadic family and to go horse
riding. The camp also have rafts and fishing equipment for rent (hire cost not
included). In the evening, relax with a drink at the riverside terrace area and enjoy
dinner in the camp's restaurant.
Built in 2008, the Chinggis Khan Statue is
located at Tsonjin Boldog, 54km east of UB.
It is 40m tall and depicts the renowned
Mongolian leader on horseback, at the point
where - according to legend - he found a
golden whip. The statue is symbolically
pointed east towards his birthplace.
Gun-Galuut Nature Reserve contains a diverse range of ecosystems - - mountains, steppes,
rivers, lakes and wetlands - within a comparatively small area. It is a refuge for many birds -
migratory and indigenous - and many animals. Birds include the Siberian White Crane, Steppe
Eagle, Golden Eagle, Saker Falcon, Upland Buzzard, Crested lark, Horned lark, and Hoopoes.
Fauna includes Argali sheep, Ibex, White Gazelles, wolves, foxes, lynx, manul cats, and
marmots.
The imposing mountains of Baits and Berkh form the central and Southern peaks of the park,
which also includes Lake Ikh-Gun and Ayaga, the River Kherlen, and the Tsengiin Burd
wetland.
