he eastside o Austin, Tx has its own language with itsown lettering. The ABCs o eastside gives visual literacyto this unique area.

But, rst it would help to understand where the alphabetoriginated. The Latin alphabet is the main writing system in usein the Western world and is the most widely used alphabeticwriting system in the world. It is the standard script o the Englishlanguage and is oten reerred to simply as the alphabet inEnglish. It is a true alphabet which originated in the th centuryBC in Italy and has changed continually over the last years. It has roots in the Semitic alphabet and its oshoot alphabets, the Phoenician, Greek, and Etruscan. The phonetic values osome letters changed, some letters were lost and gained, andseveral writing styles (hands) developed. Two such styles, theminuscule and majuscule hands, were combined into one scriptwith alternate orms or the lower and upper case letters. Due toclassicism, modern uppercase letters dier only slightly rom theirclassical counterparts. There are ew regional variants.

It is generally held that the Latins adopted the western variant othe Greek alphabet in the th century BC rom Cumae, a Greekcolony in southern Italy making the early Latin alphabet one

However, thanks to classical revival Roman capitals werereintroduced by humanists making Latin inscriptions easilylegible to modern readers while many medieval manuscripts areunreadable to an untrained modern reader, due to unamiliarletterorms, narrow spacing and abbreviation marks with someexceptions o some marks such as the apostrophe and the exceptiono Carolingian minuscule letters (lower caps) which were mistaken

    or Roman.

Additionally the phonetic value o the letters has changed rom itsorigins and is not constant across the languages adopting the Latinalphabet, such as English or French, oten the orthography does notully match the phonetics, resulting in Homophonic heterographs(words written dierently but sounding the same) such as inEnglish and adopting digraphs or new sounds, such as sh orVoiceless postalveolar ricative in English.

among several Old Italic alphabets emerging at the time. The Latin alphabet started out as roman square capitals, uppercaseseried letters. Through cursive styles that developed to adapt theormerly inscribed alphabet to writing with a pen, the lowercaseletters evolved. Throughout the ages, many dissimilar stylisticvariations o each letter have evolved that are still identied asbeing the same letter.

In addition to the aorementioned square capitals used inarchitecture, in the Roman empire and in the Middle Ages orrapidly written vernacular documents roman cursive or even a ormo shorthand, called tironian notes, were used.

In the course o the evolution o the alphabet rom the old italicalphabet, G and Q developed rom C, rom the Greek alphabet theletters K,X,Y,Z were taken, the letter j developed rom a fourished i,v and u split and the ligature o vv became w, the letter thorn wasintroduced rom the runic alphabet but was lost in all languagesbar Icelandic, additionally the letter s ater the th century could bewritten either as a long s inside a word or as a terminal s at the endor ater a long s (), but the long s was later lost. The oldest Latin inscriptions do not distinguish between /g/ and/k/, representing both by C, K and Q according to position. K wasused beore A; Q was used (i at all) beore O or V; C was used

elsewhere. This is explained by the act that the Etruscan languagedid not make this distinction. C originated as a turned orm oGreek Gamma and Q rom Greek Koppa. In later Latin, K survivedonly in a ew orms such as Kalendae; Q survived only beore V(representing /kw/), and C was used everywhere else. G was laterinvented to distinguish between /g/ and /k/; it was originallysimply a C with an additional diacritic.
