AN INTRODUCTION TO SOCIAL MEDIA
Why Social Media? If you’re actually asking this question, then bless your heart! But
I’ll tell you why:
Because there are people who legitimately want to help others
out there.
Crazy, right?
You have to connect with them.
By providing a place of engagement for your community, you will
find those people—and they will help you with whatever you
ask—including writing your book!
And you will make money through them—not using them—
because they will be your friends, and you will do what you are
already doing just on a larger scale!
So, diversify! Upscale! Create a horizontal platform to tell people
about what you are doing, how you are doing it: and get your
book written!
But you don’t have to go into the deep dark without any ideas or
anyone at your back—you already have more assets at your
disposal than you probably realize!
Are you interested in anything at all? Movies? Books? Video
games?
11/21/2016
5
Then talk about them on social media. And make money
doing it. It really is that simple!

SOCIAL MEDIA WALKTHROUGHS AND TIPS & TRICKS
Facebook Ah, Facebook—you either love it or you hate. And, given it’s the
world’s largest traffic resource, you’ll need to love it. And know
how to ask people for help using it.
Embrace it. Succumb to it. And enjoy it.
Just as the blacksmith loves his anvil and tools, you too must love
your Facebook. It is but your wrench or
stencil; and just as the mechanic and
artist use those things for their
livelihoods, you, too, must use
Facebook.
How to Sign Up for Facebook 1. Open your web browser and go to
www.facebook.com
2. If you see the signup form, fill out
your name, email address or phone number, password,
birthday, and gender.
a. If you don't see the form, click Sign Up, then fill out the
form.
3. Click ‘Sign Up’.
4. Once you sign up, you'll need to confirm your email address
or phone number. We'll send you either an email or a text
message to help you confirm your account.
11/21/2016
7
How to Make a Facebook Group Page 1. From your home page on Facebook
go to the Groups section on the left
side menu and find ‘Add Group’.
a. The number of things you have
in your ‘Favorites’ will determine how far down you
have to scroll to see this.
b. And if you cannot find it or have any trouble, just go to
this link: https://www.facebook.com/addgroup
2. You'll be taken to a page that displays the option to create a
group as well as showing you some suggested groups to join.
3. Go ahead and click ‘Create New Group’.
11/21/2016
8
4. Name your group and
select privacy
options.
5. The first thing you
need to do is give
your group a name.
a. This name can
be whatever
you want and
you can change
it later.
b. But try to make the group name memorable and
searchable, so that people can find it!
6. Something strange
Facebook does is forces you
to add at least one other
person to your group.
a. If that’s an issue, just
ask a friend or relative
to temporarily add them while you build your market
base.
b. So in order to create
your group, you'll need
to add at least 1 friend
to the group.
7. You'll now need to decide
what privacy setting you want your group to have.
11/21/2016
9
a. This is probably the most important choice you'll make
while creating your group, as there are some limits to
changing down the road.
b. I strongly recommend just making it an open or a
closed group. Secret groups simply cannot be found
unless people are invited.

General Facebook Tips Everything you post on Facebook is content.
As we now know from the News Feed Algorithm—if you’ve read
in the news about it—how users interact with that content is
important.
Consider every piece of content you post an opportunity for
increased and specific engagement, and don't be afraid to have a
little fun.
Images are incredibly effective on Facebook—posts
with photos get, on average, 39% more
engagement.
Many Facebook users check the site on their lunch breaks and
after dinner, and while the latter is outside of normal business
hours, it's worth testing to see if that's a time when your audience
is looking for content.
While the page environment Facebook gives brands is mostly set,
you want to make sure you're directing your users where you
want them to go.
Facebook is an open and public space, so you can't
control everything people say.
Instances in which it is appropriate to remove user content would
include: advertorial content, harassment and abuse, derogatory
or offensive language, threatening posts, and posts that contain
sensitive information (credit card numbers, addresses, etc.).
11/21/2016
11
Instances in which you should address the comments instead of
removing them include: customer complaints, negative
commentary, and critical statements. You may not like what
people always have to say, but in social media, you always have
to listen.

Tumblr Tumblr is a microblogging and social networking site. It functions
primarily as a place for people to share user-curated and user-
created content by way of ‘blogs’ (think online journals or mind-
dumps).
How to Sign Up for Tumblr 1. Open your web browser and go
to www.tumblr.com
2. In the top portion of the screen,
you should see the three boxes
highlighted here.
a. Click in each of them and
type in your email address,
a password to protect your
Tumblr account with, and a user name that you wish to
represent yourself with on Tumblr (respectively).
i. Your username will be how everyone on Tumblr
knows you—so make sure to choose something
catchy!
b. Then click ‘Sign Up’.
3. Click in the box labelled ‘How Old Are
You?’ and type in your age.
4. Now just click the check box labelled
‘I'm Not a Robot’ to pass it and go to
the next step.
11/21/2016
13
5. To get an idea of what kind of posts you might like to see
and
what blogs you might want to follow on Tumblr, Tumblr will
ask you to pick at least five categories of interest.
a. Simply click on a category in the main screen to select
it. When you select a category, it may break into sub-
categories that you can select as well.
b. Selected categories will appear at the top of the
screen, starting from the left. Click a category that
appears here if you change your mind and want to
remove it.
c. When you have selected at least five categories of
interest, click ‘Next’ in the top-right corner.
6. You should be taken to your Tumblr "dashboard", the main
control center for your Tumblr account. Now, there's just
one
11/21/2016
14
more thing that you need to do, and that's verify your email
address.
7. Go to your email client and log in. Find the email from
Tumblr Support labeled ‘Verify Your Email Address’ and click
it to open it. Then, click the big blue ‘This Is Me!’ button
inside it.
8. Once your email address is verified, click ‘Or, Skip to Your
Web
Dashboard’ to go back to your main screen on Tumblr.

15
General Tumblr Tips Add lots of tags and make sure they are relevant: tags are the
main way people will find you on Tumblr.
However, don’t become a “tag spammer”! Make sure your tags
are relevant.
If you utilize any SEO tools, make sure your target keywords are in
your tags as well as their variations.
No idea what SEO is? That’s fine! When tagging a post, just tag it
with stuff that you think is relevant to your post—and make sure
to tag it with stuff that is kind of relevant, too!
Be an active user: try to post a link every day. Again, avoid
looking “spammy” by posting tons of links in a short amount of
time.
Post different types of media!
Tumblr allows text, photos, quotes, links, audio, and
video!
Make sure to reblog: reblog links from other users that post stuff
similar to what you post.
By reblogging your followers content, they likely
reblog your content!
Have a flippin’ awesome profile: your profile should be appealing
to the eye. Messy-looking profiles are less likely to be followed.

Twitter Twitter is an information network made up of 140-character
messages called Tweets. It's an easy way to discover the latest
news related to subjects you care about.
Twitter contains information you will find valuable—and the users
you are promoting to will be able to see your information in real
time as soon as it goes live. It is like a ‘news bulletin’ for the
Internet!
Messages from users you choose to follow will show up on your
home page for you to read.
It’s like being delivered a newspaper
whose headlines you’ll always find
interesting – you can discover news as
it’s happening, learn more about topics
that are important to you, and get the
inside scoop in real time.
How to Sign Up for Twitter 1. Head on over to https://twitter.com/signup
2. Fill out the signup form. You can use a phone number that
accepts texts or an email address.
3. If you enter your email, it is going
to prompt you for your phone
number regardless.
11/21/2016
17
4. You can enter a phone number if you wish to secure your
account to your phone number, otherwise you can simply
click ‘Skip’.
5. It will ask you for a username—you can let it generate one
or choose one. Make sure it is something distinctive people
will know you by. It will appear as your mention tag ‘@’.
a. You can change this name at any time.
11/21/2016
18
General Twitter Tips The point of Twitter is to contribute their own content
(“tweeting”).
People who are interested in what you have to say may follow
you and they’ll see all the Tweets you share with them.
The shorter, the better: short tweets (under 100 characters) get
much more interaction than longer ones. Try to make “tease
Tweets” that leave people wanting to know more.
Use @mentions: @mentions include a Twitter’s user’s username.
Make friends, and use @mentions to tell them what you’re up to
or ask what they’re getting into.
Be active. Seem likeable.
Use visual content: Twitter now allows images. Tweets with image
links get twice the number of clicks than those without.
Use relevant #hashtags: Tweets with hashtags also receive twice
the engagement as those without. This is a great way for users
searching for content like yours to find you.
Have a Twitter presence: Tweet somewhat regularly, and interact
with users the same way you would interact with people in the
“real world.”
Retweet: retweet tweets from your followers or from users who
have information relevant to your niche.
Twitter has a great ‘how-to-Twitter’ guide, and break using
Twitter down as such:
1. Discovering sources—seek out others with your interests
and follow them.
11/21/2016
19
a. You can find sources outside of Twitter and then link
their content to your Twitter feed.
i. The dream is that people will do the same with
your content!
2. Checking your timeline—everything you’re interested in will
appear in your timeline. Curate it and comb it for hot news
and leads to retweet and post on your own timeline.
3. Taking it with you—be ever-connected and use Twitter
mobile services so you can stay on top.
4. Building a voice—use existing information (those sources
from above) to ‘make your own voice’ on Twitter so people
know what you’re all about.
a. E.g. if you’re a gamer, post gamer news and related
articles.
b. Retweet things you are interested in.
5. Mentioning people—this is as simple as it sounds: simply
@mention people. Use the @ symbol before a user’s name
to call their attention to your tweet.
a. This can potentially garnish retweets, likes, and
follows!
11/21/2016
20
Reddit Simply put: Reddit is the front page of the Internet. The word
‘Reddit’ actually comes from the amalgamation of ‘read it’. As in,
“I already read it.” “I already read it on Reddit.”
Also, a strange thing, Reddit is trademarked just ‘reddit’. Not
Reddit. The capitalization is used, or not, by all of its users and it
is often unclear—technically speaking, however, it is meant to not
be capitalized.
Because Reddit has no editors or curators (other than the user’s
ability to vote on content itself), news comes and goes as quickly
as the news itself: Fox News will be reporting on something that
is starting to trend but Reddit would have already have posted
live video from the trending topic yesterday.
As stated, Reddit is curated by its own users: registered users can
vote submissions up or down to organize the posts and determine
their position on the site's pages.
The submissions with the most positive votes appear on the front
page or the top of a category.
Content entries are organized by areas of interest called
"subreddits". The subreddit topics include news, science, gaming,
movies, music, books, fitness, food, and image-sharing, among
many others.
If you posted something amazing enough…you could land on the
front page of Reddit! So, effectively, if you actually generated
powerful, interesting enough content:
11/21/2016
21
You could be on the front page of the front
page of the Internet!
How to Sign Up for Reddit 1. Go to www.reddit.com
2. Click on ‘sign in or create an account’ in the top-right by
your language selection.
3. Enter a username (this is how users will know you!), a
password, verify your password, and (it is totally optional)
enter an email.
a. If you choose not to enter an
email, you will not be able to
recover your account if you ever
forget the password!
b. These types of accounts are
oftentimes called ‘throwaways’ because you’ll be
making just one or a couple of posts and moving on
from that account.
That’s it for signing up on Reddit! Now that was easy, huh?
11/21/2016
22
General Reddit Tips Now once you submit a link or text post, other users can either
upvote or downvote it. They can also comment on it.
Posts can rise right to the top or fall to the bottom depending on
the number of upvotes.
Upvotes are adding points to your karma whereas downvotes
take them away. The original poster gets the score for the post
that he made on Reddit.
Here is the Magic Bullet for Reddit
To get on the top it is imperative that you get at
least ten upvotes as soon as possible.
Considering you don’t get too many downvotes, the chances of
you rising to the top obviously increases drastically.
Basically if you get ten votes quickly, your posts will get more
traction and will be grab more attention.
Another thing that you should seriously consider when it comes to
your posts on Reddit is the headline. Like any other platform
online, your headline is what will really grab eyeballs. There is no
hard and fast rule to make a great Reddit headline. But you can be
creative about it.
For instance, you can always use cats as they rock on Reddit but if
they are engaged in something, you are more likely to get noticed.
A great idea for getting traction on Reddit will be to rely on the
latest happenings. Something that is trending around the world
11/21/2016
23
will easily get you high traction on Reddit. Just be witty and
creative about it.
Be sure to check out what kind of posts get upvotes on that
particular subreddit before posting.
You can usually spot what kind of sentiments and what kind of
tone get the most appreciation.
Being controversial, one way or the other, is a good idea—you
will get either great popularity or notoriety, and it can often mean
the same thing.
When it comes to the content itself, make sure that you have
something that is original.
But, if you have something that has been posted and discussed
before, you can use it in a different way.
For instance, you can convert a post into something funny or even
in different context.
On Reddit, witty and sarcastic posts get a lot of
attention, along with memes and satire.
And one last thing! Don’t worry if you something weird to share.
It can also get you a lot of upvotes.
Weird is wonderful on Reddit.
11/21/2016
24
SOCIAL MARKETEERING I am going to just get this out of the way in case you are
skimming:
Do not use social media purely to
promote or try and sell people
things! Otherwise, you will fail.
These are some simple elements of social marketing which I shall
go over, but here they are in CliffsNotes form:
1. Adjacent content—follow others, discover what your
users/followers like, and curate your posts accordingly
2. Responsiveness—respond to everything, even criticism!
3. Legitimacy—you are here more than just to promote
4. Providing humor/interesting information to your target
audience—don’t be boring!
5. Credibility—be who you say you are, and don’t lead your
users to any bad places
6. Engagement—lead the conversation in your favor, but don’t
back down if it doesn’t go well
7. Moderation—don’t get banned!
8. Timing—know when, and how quickly, to post and engage
with your community
9. Content—know your market, and create and curate content
they will find interesting
11/21/2016
25
Adjacent Content Adjacent content is probably the most important trick I am going
to teach you in this section, so that’s why I’ve put it up top.
If someone is following you, liking, or even sharing your content,
they are not doing this because they are making a buck off of it
(unless they’re in the same market as you, haha!). They are doing
it because they legitimately like your content or found it
engaging.
So! Find out who is sharing, liking, or engaging with your stuff:
most importantly, find what else they like.
Then share and promote that stuff, too. “Oh, Passive Cash Rocks
posts guides on how to live off basically doing nothing—that’s
awesome! I’ll share their stuff.” A few weeks later, “Whoa,
Passive Cash Rocks posted a guide on how to get free promo
codes, that’s wicked!” Sure, these things are…similar in that they
both save or make you money—awesome, right?—but they are
tangential or adjacent to our primary goal: passive income.
So you like or share our guide—thanks!—we like and share
whatever you post. You follow this guide and throw an ad on that
link I shared. You make some money. Easy enough?
11/21/2016
26
Responsiveness Not every update has to stem from original ideas of yours; you
can bounce off the ideas that other people are already posting.
Social media relies on conversations, so jump in and be a part of
them.
Always respond to other peoples’ comments. Always respond to
the conversation.
Be nice. Be engaging. Be informative. And respond
in kind.
Legitimacy You cannot just enter into social media and be an ad promoter or
someone just living off the work of others. That won’t go over so
well. You won’t amass a following.
Again, you have to have an actual purpose. It is so easy: just find
something you enjoy sharing! Some content you want to curate!
Your idea does not have to be original but it must be evergreen.
Don’t make a Twitter account that only posts about the Winter
Olympics. You’ll only be popular every four years, aaagh! That’d
be awful!
Be evergreen.
Talk about video games, movies, books—talk about game
developers, movie producers, how to write better and faster.
Find a niche; stick with it; change it; monetize it.
11/21/2016
27
Add value to the conversation by sharing content that will make
your customers' lives easier (bonus points for tips and tricks that
help them use your products or services).
Another thing: social channels can be an incredibly fruitful place
to find people to do work for you. E.g. Fiverr ads, or LinkedIn.
These places and the people on them love when you send them
traffic! So, do that—and I assure you if you let the Fiverr gig know
you advertised for them because of the job well done they did for
you—they’re very likely to like, share, and follow back!
Get the Stick Out This is a tricky one, and it's more of a branding question than
anything else.
First of all, know what your brand is and what kind of personality
it embodies.
If humor is not a part of that, you might avoid this type of post. It
can backfire and be incredibly awkward.
If you are going to try humor, safety first!
Ensure you're not unintentionally sharing something that could be
offensive by testing it amongst your colleagues, friends, or even
family.
Always err on the side of caution with sensitive topics.
Once you've made sure the humor is acceptable, make sure it's
actually funny, because a bad joke is just embarrassing.
But seriously, I say it again—and again:
11/21/2016
29
Elements of Social Marketeering There are a few major key elements to monetization within the
realm of social media as a whole:
Credibility A huge part of your brand is built on trust, and the foundation of
that trust is your credibility.
Grammar and spelling are universally important, and all efforts for
their correct uses should be made.
Fact-check sources and news before sharing them on your
networks.
Ensure the safety of your users by not sharing links to malicious
sites.
Essentially, make sure you don't give your community a reason to
believe you are anything other than what you are: awesome.
Engagement Because we are building something rooted in relationships, you
can take full advantage by joining in the conversation with your
customers.
They want to interact with your brand, and are going out of their
way to do so. Honor that.
The type of conversation will dictate the cadence and rhythm of
your response.
This is largely dependent on your product as well; for example, an
airline's response rates to customer service issues ought to be
11/21/2016
30
rather quick, as their customers' needs are likely far more time
sensitive than those in another industry.
Only you can determine what is right for your organization and
product, but at least in the initial stages of building a community,
it's better to err on the side of faster responses.
Moderation Brands have increasing levels of responsibility for user-generated
content posted on their walls or in comments.
You'll want to proactively think through your stance on
inappropriate content on your Facebook page, and your best
practice would be to make this stance publicly available.
This lets your community know what you will and will not allow,
lessens the chance of a surprise, and builds a sense of safety and
sets expectations.
If you read nothing else from this section, just know this: don’t
spam; don’t get banned.
11/21/2016
31
Timing Be sure you're tracking what time of day your fans are most
active.
Focusing your engagements during these times will help you grow
your community.
Also, be sure to pay attention to things like sentence structure,
phrasing, and types of posts that are particularly engaging to your
audience.
Also, think if, for instance, folks check your site, blog, tweets, or
whatever during their lunch breaks, or early morning, or before
they go to bed—don’t throw stuff at them when they’re not
around!
Content This is obviously the big daddy of ‘em all.
Make your audience's experience about their experience and
their connections rather than your CTR and conversion rates.
Concentrate on your clients, your
customers—your friends, family, and the
very people interested in the same stuff as
you—and you will succeed.
