Unified Communications and CollaborationEasy-to-use convergence-ready networks for small businessesSolution brief

Today’s business challenges Small and growing businesses need agility to remain competitive in today’s marketplace. However, without a dedicated IT staff, they can be at a disadvantage when trying to seamlessly deliver unified communications and collaboration (UC&C) applications they need to increase flexibility, efficiency, and productivity. To gain the full range of UC&C benefits—enhance business operations and reduce cost—small businesses need solutions that are reliable and secure, as well as easy to implement and maintain.

IDC has found that a majority of small and midsize businesses incur IP communications and collaboration system failures caused by out-of-date or hard-to-manage communications and collaboration implementations.1 From a network perspective, common issues include:•Unreliable systems and applications: The network

consists of legacy devices that can slow network traffic and produce occasional network outages that cannot be tracked because of inadequate network management capabilities.

•Lack of scalability and flexibility: Existing equipment may not support bandwidth demand and features such as traffic prioritization that new applications require; adding new devices such as IP phones may push the limit of available bandwidth.

•Insufficient security: In addition to high-security requirements on wireless connections, new applications often demand features such as VLAN and device authentication for secure communications.

•Inadequate maintenance support: Without an on-site network specialist and with a growing number of users, devices, and applications, business operations can be impeded by slower network access, decreased application performance, as well as increased network downtime and expensive service calls.

Innovative HP solutions to the rescue In response to these challenges, HP networking solutions enable businesses to do more with less. Through a broad portfolio of secure, unified networking products and solutions—reliable, standards-based wired and wireless network devices purpose-built to create a Converged Infrastructure for modern unified communication applications—HP helps businesses simplify implementations, enhance business agility, and manage costs.

Solution Scenario #1 Easy-to-install, easy-to-maintain converged networking for up to 100 users

A small business with a fully standards-based IT and Voice over IP (VoIP) infrastructure deployed at a single location has high-performance wired and wireless LAN connections for servers, storage, printers, client-PCs, and notebooks. A PoE switch provides connectivity for IP phones and other PoE-powered devices such as wireless access points. Traffic prioritization and auto-voice VLAN implementation enhances security and enables superb voice quality. The wireless access point provides flexible connectivity for mobile workers, and secure guest access can be implemented on a separate VLAN. Wireless IEEE 802.11n devices enjoy high-speed connectivity comparable to 10/100 wired devices; legacy IEEE 802.11a/b/g devices are also supported. The router for Internet connectivity provides firewall security and additional wired and wireless connections. Switches, access points, and router are all managed through an intuitive, easy-to-use web interface.
